I have never been to Galveston. I am starting the search for places to eat since I will be in a hotel. I'm staying @ the Hampton Inn  and will have a rental car, but walking is always cool.

I'm looking for some good eats for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and especially a kinda 4 star kinda place for a special dinner.

Any ideas?

Gaido's is one of the landmark "local" seafood places in Galveston. It's on the seawall and looks a little kitchy with a big crab on the roof, but the seafood is usually outstanding.

Anyone swam in the bay or similar water down near Galveston lately? Wondering about current water temps. We tried out our wetsuits at a nearby lake this morning and it was REALLY cold… probably in the 50s or low 60s. (Looking online to find a fishing temp guide.)

Anyway, I'm just trying to decide between sleeveless and full wetsuits. If it's as cold as today, I definitely want a full!!

Most people who just did the Kemah Tri had sleeveless. The water is nice you can totally do it without a full suit. I am just because I prefer the buoyancy. The lake temp is about 67/68.

Water temp at Kemah this weekend was said to be 71 degrees. When I swam there last weekend it didn't seem that cold. My 15 year old son was swimming Friday and Saturday (with Chris Lieto and Terenzo Bozzone by the way - he thought that was way cool!) and didn't wear a wetsuit. He said the water was warmer than what he swims in for high school swim team.

Did you have to say that? :p I'm trying so hard to not stress! While I don't put much stock in Texas weather forecasting, all week is slated as being really windy 18-20mph with Sunday 15 mph winds. I know this can and probably will change, it's not helping the nerves! I need all the legs I can get for my run which is pathetically slow. If it's windy, it's going to be a very long day for me!

#954.... I feel like throwing up.

Hey fellas, I'm in the M 34-39 group too....I'm just looking to survive. This is my first HiM....I have no clue what I'm doing. Holeymoley...

I have a broken left hand I'm hoping they will let me swim with a brace...if not, I'll have to just clench fist it.

Good luck to everyone!

This will be my first attempt at HIM distance as well. I'm making the jump from sprint. Yeah, I'm terrified. I feel really undertrained for various reasons. I'm looking to just finish and gain some knowledge.

Does anyone know if we will be able to swim on Friday? I'm assuming I can just hop in the ocean and start swimming, but maybe not. I know there is a sprint tri on Saturday so that day is most likely out.

Nice! I can handle 71....it was a bit nippy this Sunday in Lake Lewisville. Yeah...it's going to be a long day for me too, just looking to finish and have fun. First HIM, 3rd tri, I've only done 2 sprints so far. WTH was I thinking? Undecided

Thanks for the heads up! I was just writing up my race plan/check list too.....1659.....it's going to be a long F'ing day for me :P

1004, M40-44, Navy Blue cap, 7:55AM start.

According to my estimates, I should finish between 5:30-6hours, depending on the wind and conditions.

Its going to be a long WEEKEND for me! I plan to get to Galveston on Friday around noonish and maybe go for a run on a beach somewhere. The rest of my training buddies won't be there until Saturday. I will probably be looking for someone to hang out with on Fri night. Not leaving Galveston until Monday, since we plan to "celebrate" hard after the race on Sunday!

Good luck everyone!

Cool

I did kemah oly yesterday in full wetsuit.  It was comfotable, borderline warm for me.  Temps were reported at 71-72 degrees in the water.  None of the pros wore wetsuits and there were quite a few sleeveless peeps.  It looks to be a warm, windy, humid day Sunday...cant wait to do this race again!

I know its Texas and if you dont like the weather, wait 5 min cause it will change .. but .... forecast for Sunday not very inviting (at least not until you make the turn to head back to town) .. hopefully this will change again before race time. Luckily, for those that live around here, we have pretty much had to train in these same wind conditions for the past 2 months!

  • Gusts: 30 mph

1918 here - W35-39 - SO EXCITED!
My run will suffer a bit since I was injured from Dec-Feb, but I am back running now - just slowly! PUMPED to hear that the water is over 70 - we are still sitting at low 60s at Quarry Lake in Austin and Lake Pflugerville - brrr. We have been training in nice 15-20mph winds here in Austin so I feel ready for the beautiful cross winds we will have... at least I hope so!

Good luck to all!

#288.

This is my second year to race the HIM in Galveston.  Didn't take in enough water on the run last year and ended up dehydrating....still finished though....

Here's to better memories!

I haven't checked the athlete info to confirm yes or no on this.  Unless it is specifically prohibited, I don't see why not.

If you do choose to swim, be very careful if you decide to enter the water from the Moody Gardens beach.  There are oyster beds there, and I know more than one person that has ended up with a cut on their foot the day before their race.  On race morning, we've always entered the water by jumping off the pier.

Erin, you'll do great! Aren't you also training for IMTX? You've got this one! Were you at the ORR OWS last week? I thought I saw you right before the swim start, but then didn't see you again. I'm sure I'll see you Sun! Kelly
