I really don't know what it is swimming, biking I can hit any zone I want (hills will make me spike really high, but cadence work has helped reduce that), but running I generally spend the first 10-20 minutes in the mid to high 150's, then after that I spend most of the rest of the time in the high 160's, and as I fatigue, I start to hit the 170's. If I am doing a brick these figures will raise quicker. I am no expert on how the physiology of it works, but the more you run, the fitter you will get and your heart rate will lower over time. your body needs to adapt if you are new to running. as is often said run lots but keep it easy. if you cant carry on a conversation while you are running, you are goign too fast. I think what Jeff means to say is that as you get more fit, your HR for the same pace will get lower. For example if you have a HR of 160 to run 9 min/miles, as you get fitter, your HR miles will get lower. |

Master 2538 Albuquerque | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED jsklarz - 2010-12-29 4:24 AM Whose up for a weight loss challenge? I am going for a pound per week whcih is a 3500 calorie deficit 500/day. I intend to accomplish this by cutting out refined sugar (other than, of course, in my morning coffee, one does have to be somewhat reasonable) and dessert Maybe... I'm a little lost on the whole deficit part. Could someone dumb it down for me? I've tracked food a bit on an app for my Droid (from SparkPeople), along with exercise, in the recent past. I tried to stick around 1800-2000 calories. But if I'm trying to stay in that range, does that mean eat OVER that and subtract the exercise to get there? Honestly there were days when I would eat 1800ish calories, but burn that much or more (according to the app), resulting in a net zero for the day or even negative. |

Of course I'm still ramping up mileage and changing effort levels, so I'm sure that factors in to it quite a bit. You can search on my Garmin connect account if you like, might be easier than the logs here: |

What you need to do is find your maintenance caloric intake. Some of the better formulas, I'll look them up if you like, factor in bf% and activity level into the calculations. Take that number and subtract 500. That is the amount of cals you should be eating to loose weight at a conservative and easily sustainable level. |

This hsows you the total calories you burn from day-to-day living and then adds in calories burned from exercise as you log your training. Just go to 'Settings --> Training Log Settings --> Log Defaults' to Enable this feature. Edited by kaburns1214 2010-12-29 10:41 AM |

Master 2538 Albuquerque | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED But is my "target" number of calories the net result of the day? Or the total calories consumed (not factoring in burned)? |
|
2010-12-29 11:48 AM in reply to: #3256199 |
Pro 4672 Nutmeg State | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED Your "target" claorie intake should be 500 calories less than the total number you burn in any given day. For example, my resting metabolic rate is about 1500 calories per day (this is the number I would burn if I did nothing all day long). I train about 15-17 hours / week, so my training results in using approximately an additional 800 calories/day. So on any given day, I burn about 2300 calories (BMR plus exercise). My goal is to loose weight, so I try to consume about 500 fewer calories than I burns each day, so I shoot for about 1800 calories/day. I would call 1800 my "target" calories. If I have a rest day or a really big training day, I adjust the calories accordingly. |

He's sooooooo out of shape even if you can't tell by looking at him. Will be an effort in patience on my part since I tend to push the pace any time I'm out riding. Just an FYI I am competitive to a fault in just about everything I do. |
