Ritter-
How often are you taking an Ice bath?  The pools in our neighborhood are open year around and I can take advantage of stepping in them for a quick soak.  Are they best right after a long workout, intervals, day before a rest day, etc?

I love ice baths, I'd say two a week maybe but I haven't done them in a while. After your hardest workouts or whenever you feel that you are going to wake up sore the next day would be the workouts you would want to take them right after. I usually did 12 minutes but forget what temperature it was at. Have fun!

Ran 1 hour tonight, going to measure tomorrow. Went 30 Min. out, 26 back, and 4 min. cool down. Felt pretty good about the negative splits!

I will be doing 20 miles on the bike tomorrow morning with a friend and then a much deserved day off Sunday while my wife runs the Naples half marathon.

600 yards? Is this because you are worn out? or lack motivation? I would start breaking up your swim to increase endurance like doing 10x100 easy of course, w/ 10-20"  rest, 5x200, something along those lines. If you would like a short workout do something like 200 easy swim warmup, 6x50 as 25 drill/25 swim, 4x100 @ race pace (15" rest), 100 cool down. There's definitely more you can do with longer workouts.

Swimming has always been my weak point. I've got 10 years of competitive running under my belt, and maybe 8 years of bike riding in different forms over the years but never very consistent. I think I just haven't gotten comfortable in the water. Breathing has always been tough for me to understand in the pool but I think its finally coming along. I think I need a longer day and force myself to HTFU. I'll go for 800 in my next workout, then maybe 1,000 then an easy day in the pool after that. I usually make it to the pool 2-3 times/ week so hopefully I will make the jump that I need to.
Thanks for the advice I'll put it into practice and see how it goes.

On the weekend I set up my little training area in my furnace room. I

LMAO, will you PLEASE post pix?  I am thinking about a similar setup in my mud room...

In the lighted picture you can see the water container with a black hose on the right along with my netbook. I can reach both so I can refill my water or change to a different video while biking. For sound I use headphones that seal well and have a volume control on them. There is a pull string on the left so I can turn the light on or off. I normally bike with it off so the screen is better. I built a bracket to hold the projector off of the ceiling. The space is a little small but its all that I need and it was otherwise wasted space plus I dont care if it drip sweat onto the floor or spill water.

I LOVE it!  I have about the same amount of space in my Mudroom, gonna see what I can get together. Today is probably going to be in the basement watching football tho'.  Thanks for posting...it is awesome.  I think I like the little details the most...water refill hose?  Light switch string?  You've thought of it all.

We're already into the weekend, but I'll post anyway.  Finishing up P90X (on week 11 out of 12 or 13 I guess).  Plyometrics today plus a trainer ride. Tomorrow will be Shoulders and Arms + Abs and a run.  Chest and Back + Abs and a run yesterday, 30 mins around the neighborhood, nice and slow.

For swimming I am thinking of getting a few lessons before I start ramping back up.  My husband could barely swim and after a few lessons with a tri coach I am scared he might catch me on the swim (he'll catch me on the bike or run anyway but I need to have something I can beat him at).

Or should I do a master's swim program for the spring?

Thoughts from the peanut gallery?

Oh well, before I do any of that, gotta take the kids to some classes...bye for now.

63 mile ride today - FAIL
The last ride I took outdoors was Nov 7th where I did the bike leg of my HIM in 2:45.

I left for a 2:30 ride on roads I am familure with.  I took 5 bootles of water and 3 gels.  I usualy have a concentrate of infinit, cliff bar and water for my long rides.  I am out of infinit so I decided to just take 3 gels and leave my cliff at home.  Well I took 2 new roads that IMTX will use and I was loving the route.  I got into it a bit and thought all was well.  When I got to a town named Richards I thought I would take another road on the IMTX route because it was not that far out of the way.  dumb.  I was out in the middle of nowhere and although I was not winded my legs were shot.  I could not keep a pace and I was starving.  I went to the first store I came across and ate 2 snickers and a bottle of gatoraide.  The rest of the rest of the ride was ok, but man my legs would not move.  I noticed a few things that have me puzzled.  I was not tired, legs did not hurt, but I just could not stay a speed.  I would try to keep moving, but I had to coast several times and I was very lonely..  When I got home the baby was crying, oldest would not nap and mommy was going crazy.  I could not leave for my run, but I know I could have done it.

Did I bonk, not ready for this long of a ride, or a combination.  I am going to do the ride again next week, with plenty of nutrition, and see what happens.  I mean it cant be any worse.

Maybe this wasn't your day, even the kids weren't having a good day... The only thing I cold think of is gearing and pedal rpm's keep them high, but it does sound like you kind of bonked and didn't ever get a second wind. I think if you focus on your nutrition next time, and maybe stick to the roads you know, then the ride will feel more routine to you. I like the determination to go out next week and do it again though! Keep it up.

there are good days and bad days, sounds to me you like just ran out of gas. The flip side is that at least you got out and did the ride, I would LOVE to get my bike outside.

Its been snowing all day here, just got back from snowboarding, and I just put "traction" screws into the soles of my shoes for tomorrow mornings 16km run. It will be the furthest I have run and the conditions are going to be brutal... I cant wait!

did the 16km, the screws worked well but I thought I would try them in old running shoes first. This turned out to be a big mistake as I now have a large blister on the instep of my foot.

Screws to convert your shoes to be snow ready? I've read about that, sounds interesting but could certainly cause some pain. Was it just due to have spikes on the bottom of the shoes or because the screws were poking through?
Way to go on toughing out the weather!

I've never done one either, but good luck. Hopefully they will bring you along and break you in for your first one. Be confident and smart while you're out there and you'll do fine.

I did my first group ride last weekend. Everyone was very encouraging and our group leader did a good job with the 2-3 first timers. I'm pretty comfortable on the bike so it wasn't much of a challenge, when it was my turn for one of my pulls everyone appreciated that I brought the pace back down to what it was supposed to be after it spiraled out of control with a tail wind and we dropped a few people.

Patrick - I've had a similar thing happen to me on a run.  I headed out to do 5 miles but just couldn't get my legs to go.  I wasn't tired, wasn't hungry, wasn't thirsty but I wasn't moving.  I was in the middle of my HM training and could normally do that distance, on that route, in my sleep but that day I had to take a walk break before calling it quits early and heading home.  I was fine the rest of the day and the next run everything was back to normal.  Some days are just like that.

I had a nice lazy day yesterday but am going to be hitting the trainer shortly.  Tomorrow I'll be taking advantage of the hubs being home and going to the gym to swim in the afternoon.  It will be my first swim since I got sick and I've been nervous about annoying my sinuses but I think it's time.

Nope 3/8 long so they didnt come through, they did grip into the hardened snow and ice but I never felt any pressure points from them. I think I might get something like this instead http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id...

Trout - 2011-01-14 1:36 PM What's the general take on training zones?  Is that another name for heart rate zones?  I have never done any of my previous training (running mainly) using zones.  Should I consider exploring this?  Does it help to know how easy or hard you're working?

I got a Garmin 305 for Christmas and have the ability to keep track of my heart rate - although I haven't learned much about how to use it.  Learning to use my Garmin to it's potential is another topic to discuss someday.  (I can't even get it to locate satellites!)

Thanks for the input.

Heart rate zones are good to some extent, especially for recovery days. People also train by wattage on the bike, or paces for swim or run.

I generally try to take an ice bath after all hard/long runs. No ice baths day before a race though. The pool I use was 45 degrees this afternoon and I didn't even let it finish recording the temp. The good thing about really cold ice baths is everything goes numb quicker.
