Began my training year in a great way. Went for a long run and really took it easy. Was able to maintain a decent pace.

Double posted so I decided that I would post my training goals for 2012.Swim - 72 milesBike - 3360 milesRun - 786 milesThe swim is going to be the real challenge. But I am pretty good at following my training routine. I have modified the wkous to ensure success. Trying to ensure that my nutrition will allow me to maintain the regiment.

Happy new year. I haven't been able to get in too much running like I'd hoped while I've been down here in Florida. I've been distracted by other things that have been going on. I come home Tuesday and then it'll be back to the routine by the middle of the week or the weekend.  Might get out tomorrow morning for another three mile run.  Last time I ran was Thursday.  Otherwise no gym or running for me.  Actually, since I'm at the hotel now I might go get on the treadmill for a run!  No reason not to!

Happy New Year!

Shane

And Sarah, I do have a bike buying problem apparently!  But luckily if I can sell my Felt it won't cost me much to move up to the Cervelo out of pocket.  And it might be beneficial to have the two bikes (tri and road) being similar!  I'm waiting on a final call from the dealer to confirm the other guy they found is going with a Cervelo.

So today my dad bought me the Total Immersion book.  I am getting read to start reading it now.  I am just curious as to what your opinions on Total Immersion are?  I know that it can be quite the controversey in the triathlon world.

My opinion is that it has many good pointers, but you have to take it with a grain of salt. Basically, you should try out what they say and practice the drills, if something does not feel right, or you feel more comfortable doing it differently, then just disregard what does not feel right. I do feel that the "method" they teach is much more useful for distance swimming than for speed racing, so in that sense, I would say it's more applicable to triathlon training. In my case I do both, triathlons and swim meets, so I only follow some of the pointers.

A few months ago, I attended a clinic with Karlyn Pipes-Nielsen and liked some of her advice a lot, so I pretty much combine both methods. Karlyn suggests less body roll (a rock instead of a roll) and a shorter wider pull (to use your lats more than your triceps).

I'm a big fan of Total Immersion.  I couldn't swim more than 100 yards without being completely spent before changing my form based on the TI model.  I basically was able to swim a mile straight almost overnight.  The more time I put in, the faster I got.  The biggest thing around getting faster swimming is that you have to swim, swim, swim.  It doesn't do you much good if you're just clutching the side of the pool gasping for air.  In addition to the book, there are some good videos on YouTube that are helpful since you can actually see the technique in action.  Good luck!

Good morning Team,  had a great swim today.  I am kicking off my official HIM training today.  I haven't actually registered yet but I am going to start the training.

Hi everyone! Just got in from a 6M run. Trying to enjoy the time outside before we are due to get several days of frigid weather. At least it will make me appreciate my trainer!

Ken, good call on the training goals. I hadn't even given my year as a whole any thought. I suppose I'll say 50M swim, 3500M bike and 1000M run. Honestly, the swim goal is a complete guess, but I'm pretty sure the other two are definitely within reason.

Shane, good for you for even attempting to workout while on vacation. Have fun, and don't beat yourself up too much for missing some, as long as you get back on schedule once you're home. Good luck selling your first bike to fund the third one. If you think the bike obsession alone is bad, just wait until you move onto race wheels!

Tyler, I don't know much about TI swimming, but it certainly sounds like Sebastian and Dan have some valuable input. Let me know how you like it!

As someone who was already a pretty strong swimmer (sub 1 min 100), I found TI to be amazing, especially for longer distances. It let me go further with less effort. I do not, however, find that it made me any faster, if anything maybe a touch slower, but much much more efficient. Hope that is some help to you.

Happy New Year everyone! I started out my year with my first work out today. I did a fast 5 mile run followed by 40 minutes with the free weights. Got some looks from the guys doing lunges. I do 32 on each leg with a 30 lbs bar across my shoulders. All the muscles are clearly visable in my legs. I say its from having to haul my heavy body around.

On  a different note my goal for this year is to be better on the bike. So I will need help with the issue of cadence. From what I read I am suppose to have a lower gear and faster legs. Is that right? When I tried that last year on the road and up on the trainer it just seems like I put out a lot of effort and don't get a lot of speed for the amount of energy I'm using. However if I use higher gears with a slightly slower cadence I seem to move faster. The only problem with the larger gears is that I get tired quicker.

Am I using the cadence thing in the right way? Am I suppose to feel like I'm spending a lot of energy for what I think is slower speeds? I could use as much help as I can get in this area. Thanks.

Happy New Year everyone! Hope you all managed a bit of a break (and maybe some shenanigans). I've just got back from camping down south of West Aussie, didnt manage any training per se but I did get in a nice hike along the coast and plenty of weight training (beer to mouth, beer to side, beer to mouth...Tongue out).

Like a few of you have mentioned, im very keen to do an ironman as well, especially since i've seen some of the awesome locations you can do them (check out Endurance Traveller for a bit of IM sightseeing!). I'm working at it piecemeal though, so 2011 was my first sprint, 2012 will be my first Oly with full sprint season and 2013 will be the crack at the HIM or IM depending how i'm travelling.

Will post up some distance goals once i've had a think about what would be reasonable to achieve given surgery and the long distance hike i have planned Laughing

Happy New Year's everyone.  To celebrate, I went ahead and missed my first workout of the year and spent a quality day with the family instead.  Hopefully, that'll be the only missed workout for January. I also went signed up for a Half Marathon on March 18th, nothing like an early season carrot to focus on.

My goals for the year:

Swim: 100 km (main goal: swim 3x a week thru triathlon season)

Bike: 1,750 mi (additional goal: get re-acquainted with the mtb)

Run: 750 mi (main goal: run 3x -4x/ week all year)
