Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() bonbon2252 - 2011-12-22 3:36 PM Hello - I am a female 55 yrs old in Florida. I am about to sign up for my first small Tri. It's a 1/4 open water swim 10 mile bike ride and a 3.1 run. I have just lost a bunch of weight by April of next yr I will be under 200. I have a personal trainer and the gym is doing a biggest loser style contest starting 1/1/2012 for 3 months. I enter local 5k runs and have been doing the muddy obstacle ones. But the Tri intrigued me. I think I can do it. Before I do sign up I wondered how the transtion from water to bike to running works. Can you explain? Are people all gung ho or are there beginners? BonBon Nearly every sprint race will have a number of beginners so I am sure you won't be alone. Some will even have a special category for first time racers. If so, it gives you a better chance to win an award. There will also be plenty of gung ho types as well. The first thing you will do is the swim. When you exit the water you will head back to where you previously stashed your bike, cycling, and running stuff. The transition from swimming to biking is called T1. After you finish the bike, you will return to the transition area, drop off your bike, ditch your helmet and start running. That transition is called T2. If you don't have a lot of money to invest you can go without a wetsuit. You can do the whole thing in a tri suit, or you can change clothes if you really want to. You will need a legal bike helmet. You can ride any old bike. Don't skimp on the running shoes though or you will regret it. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() typete247 - 2011-12-22 6:33 PM What do y'all think about the spinerval dvds/ any trainer dvd really. I just rode for the first time on a trainer this morning and I loved it. I thought it was a great workout! I feel that sometimes on my bike rides I stop exerting any force to the petals really, but with the dvd it was a whole new experience on the bike. I did a quick 40 minute workout and was drenched at the end. Has anyone had success using these programs? I am a poor college student so I have not yet bought any trainer dvds yet (but maybe I will in the future). I create my own entertainment usually. There's a site called TrainerRoad.com, which projects your paremeters such as HR, cadence, and power on your computer/laptop (even if you don't have a fancy powermeter!, it can find it out from certain pressure curves or something from your trainer, all you need is an ANT stick and speed/cadence sensor), it really motivates me and there are a lot of different workouts from threshold to VO2max to sweetspot, endurance, or you can just go and do your own thang. I found though that after a while just seeing my power graph go up and down I needed a bit more distraction If you google cycling torrents youll find some of the videos. For more structured training videos I think Sufferfest.com has some really good videos. My only gripe with them is that they all seem quite intense, and especially in the winter I'm more looking to build my base. But they do seem nicely mixed with music and spectacular cycling footage! Member![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks, Ok how do I join the mentoring group? I will sign up for the race in beautiful Boca Raton FL. I checked the average water temps for the Atlantic ocean in FL and in APril it's about 78. For me thats cold. That's the only part of the race that scares me is the cold water cause I can swim.

Keep with the swim Chris. Like you (and a lot of other people) I had a very difficult time initially in the water. Couldn't swim 40 meters in a pool without struggling to find a wall. Yeah I could swim, but never was on a swim team in my youth. Took me 6 months before I learned how to relax in the water. Be patient, keep at it, and you will be amazed at what you can do. BTW Steve, the Xterra wetsuit is here.... but my wife won't let me have it until XMAS morning. Can't wait to see what it does for my swim (hopefully all good)!!! |

So much fun to meet new people and feed off of all of the energy. Taking advantage of the end of year time off of work and got in a run and a swim today + an AM stretch session. Will get another stretch session in this PM. Tomorrow's a big day for me as I'm taking the series 65 exam which will qualify me to become a registered investment advisor. Have the LLC set up and will start the business part time shortly after the first of the year. Good luck with the test. Exam passed! Congrat's. Is that the CFA test? My oldest son who works for Robert Baird recently passed the 1st part of that test (I guess there are a series of CFA tests). I know he studied long and hard for that thing!! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OMG!!!!! Waaaaaaaaaaah! I had a big bio typed up and my mouse battery went dead. I went to change it and then of course got side tracked with my son and his activities and by the time I got back to the computer -- my typing and the entire page/website was gone and closed. I'm so mad! Anyhow...can I still make it into the group? I'm a recent graduate of the Mojos but can always use support and guidance.
I'll type another bio once the steam from my ears dwindles. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() bonbon2252 - 2011-12-22 3:36 PM Are people all gung ho or are there beginners? By "gung ho" I assume you mean experienced and/or competitive. Really, it depends on the race but typically you will get a good mixture of both. Often there will local races where there is beginner focus. There is a new series this year called the HITS series. Over a weekend they put on a race at every distance (Sprint, Olympic, HIM and IM). They even have what they call an "Open" division that is very short in distance (shorter than a Sprint distance) where the focus is on people doing their 1st tri. The series is coming to Florida in Jan. (Naples) and Mar. (Ocala). |

It cracked me up when Macca was complaining about how big he is for a triathlete at 5'11" 150 lbs!
Amen to that!! In 2010 I voluteered for the 70.3 World Champs in Clearwater, FL. I was at the finish line taking timing chips off finishers. So I got the opporunity to get really close to many of the pro's. I'm telling you many of the pro's are really, really, really lean (Micheal Raelert and Julie Dibens) come to mind. |

I remember something about having signed up for a first tri, and as soon as I post this I will go back and look at her posts more carefully. I also saw that DAVE has posted his full profile, and I will look at that as well. Onwards!* *(That's for you, Denise!) |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() BONNIE - You can tell you're "in" by the fact that I included you in the post a couple above this one.....and that I'm writing you now. See? wasn't that simple? ![]() Congratulations of several fronts -- doing 5km runs and the muddy obstacle events (brave lady!!!), and working very diligently to get your weight where you want it, and last but not least -- signing up for a FIRST TRIATHLON. Woo-hoo! I think you can do it, too. After all, you're doing some serious running, and you say you can swim.....and sandwiched between those is the mere matter of riding abike for 10 miles. Easy-peasy? I think so! As for the swim and your concerns about water temps, 78 is pretty warm -- at least warm enough to make wetsuits prohibited. Plus, in race mode you will be pushing yourself slightly harder, so some inner heat should be generated pretty quickly. Plus, there will be a certain buzz in the air around you, and that should take your mind off whatever cold is tickling your toes. (Really, though! 78 is nice and toasty!!) You asked about beginners and gung-ho types, and I saw a good respose from Doug; there may be others I haven't seen yet. From me, though, I'll tell you that you get all types, and definietely rest assured -- you will be one of many true first-timers, and will also be amongst a huge swack of folks who are maybe only in their second or third triathlon. Power in numbers!!! In this group, FWIW, there are several people eyeing their first triathlon, so not only will you benefit from sharing common concerns with them, but you also have a bundle of us who have loads of experience. And seeing as how this group has about ten people whio have been in previous groups with me, I can tell you with 100% certainty that they are not only experienced, but prolific in their posting habits. You're in good, supportive hands, across the board. Boca Raton, here you come!!! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OKEY - Cool beans! VERY cool beans! I'm referring to not only you, yourself, being here, but also the studfents who will be along for the ride in one form or another. That'll make it a nifty little vicarious expereicne for me, as I toyed around with the idea of starting a tri club at the last school I taught at. The problem kept being that it was about 45 minutes from where I live.....and the kids were widespread (Native reserve, far-flung)....and getting to a pool would've been a hassle. And that combo of having to do the drive on weekends and not having a vehicle that could ferry kids around and not having a pool, really.......well, I never made it happen. ANYHOW, having that connection will beinteresting for me -- and kudos to you for getting the kids involved in all this! Now, onwards to YOU! Michigan City, Indiana Dunes -- I've spent a few nights in the camprground there! But wait -- that's not really about you, is it? Try again! When you say "a bad knee", how is it bad, and does the badness have a name (i.e., illiotibial band syndrome, or pse anserinus tendonitis). And if not, where and when does it bother you. I am well on my way to collecting many of the more common knee woes, so perhaps I can help you with it. No guarantess, but let me know what ails you. Reading about you and a stability shoe suggest that you maybe over-pronate, and if so....then it could be several possible knee problems that beset over-pronators. Are you somewhat falt-flooted, or with a lowish arch? And what company/model is the shoe? Just curious! Which sprint is it that you'll be doing? (Is there one near you called Seahorse, perhaps? Thinking about it, that one might be in Kalamazoo) If it's a sprint it won't require true long-distance training, so with your knee concerns a sprint is a great distance to enter tri at. Given that it's August, that gives you a looooong period of time to gently work up to that 5km (most likely) run distance. In the words of my sports doc, you can "feather" your training so as to (hopefully!) minimize or even completely eliminate any trauma to the knee (beyond the run-of-the-mill aches and stuff that accompany somewhat focused training). In one form or another, all thsoe other sports in yoru past will help you with triathlon. MTB is the obvious best-fit, but even a history of wrestling/football/snowboarding will help in discrete ways. It might not be quite such "a long time" as you fear! Glad you're here -- and regards to the tri/jog kids! |

Decent workout tonight - ran for an hour on the dreadmill. About 80% of my running is on the dreadmill for now. My favorite kid is on the swim team at the Y and for now that's the only time I can run. After the holidays things mightn loosed up at work and I get some miles in before work. Followed the run up with a swim. I'm on week 2 of 0 to 1650. The coolest part of being horrible at something is when you start, progress comes fast and easy. |

Training this past week has been light as we have been getting ready for the trip and all of the other stuff that goes with Xmas. Looking forward to seeing my older kids and grandbaby but also anxious to start back into training at the beginning of the year. Next time I check in I'm sure I'll be 10 pages behind in theis thread. Matt, I bet your running will come back easier then you think with such a strong background. I think most people are horrible at swimming at the beginning if they didn't swim as a kid. What's the program you're using? A steady progression kind of thing? Ok, I have to ask....why is the swim team kid your favorite? Johanne |
