Recovery week continues with a trainer ride of 1:23 for 24.18 miles @17.48MPH, 119 average heart rate, 194 average watts and 98 average cadence. Legs are definitely feeling better than they did the start of the week.

So my trainer finally was delivered yesterday, I played on it for an hour avg 19.5 mph. I set up my sons mtn. bike so my family could test it out. When it arrived my wife thought I was crazy for buying it. She thought I was buying a spin bike. After she road on it for 5 mionutes she changed he mind. She mentioned it was a lot harder then the spin bikes at the gym. Boy is she right.

I Decided to do the Spinervel FTP test that came with the trainer. I have to say it was not the most motivating video. The elevator music was terrible. This is the first and last time I will watch it. The workout on the other hand WOW. It was an hour long and a killer. I ended up with a avg FTP of 202 watts. I had a max of 696W during one of the 20 second intervals. I will use the test that he had us go through to find our power. I thought I was still in bike shape until I jumped on the trainer. I won't be spending much time on the spin bikes anymore thats for sure.

Ditto!  That is awesome.  I thought I did good for my 10 Mile Time Trial test today on the trainer - 29:11 time, avg mph 20.6, avg watts 196, avg rpm 83, but your recovery ride trumps that.  Awesome!

If anyone is interested I have created a table for our group, a good way to check on each others logs easily.

And just to be clear I stole the format from last years group and modified the names, I'm not this web savvy!

Big Steve's Group (Year Two)”

Group table

1. Click on edit on the upper left hand corner of your dashboard.

2. On the tool bar, there is a button for html, click it.  It's next to the question mark symbol.

3.  In the new window, scroll to the bottom and add this code- NOTE: Remove the 2 ** before and after code.

**

Big Steve's Group (Year Two)”

**

4. Click ok.

Scott, way to make us look bad! Keep up the good work, it's motivating. I just need to quit putting in too many hours at work?

I just added a few races for the year that have a few early goals to keep focused early in the year and a 100mi bike ride in May that I unfortunately committed to last year.  Does anyone have any suggestions on training for increased mileage on the bike?

Anybody else have the view of this thread go haywire? It seems to be just the last page (8) that looks like it's formatted for a 40" widescreen, I even tried to different browsers?

Yes the thread is 20 miles wide for me as well.

Recovery week day 5 was a 65 minute masters swim class and a 3 mile run in 30:27 for a 10:07 pace and 123 average heart rate on the treadmill. Legs finally feel a little rested today. Tomorrow is a short trainer ride and then I'm taking Saturday off before I start back up with a 3 hour trainer ride on Sunday.

Glad everybody is getting motivated but keep in mind I've been doing a slow volume add since September. My last full week I put in 12 hours of good intensity. I have a fortune cookie tag that is taped to the shelf on my cube at work and it reads: Over prepare and then go with the flow. That's the way I view my training. I've never done an HIM so when I do it in June I want no question about my finishing. I didn't want to put a time on my first one but now I'm leaning towards setting a goal as low as 5:45 which scares me because the last thing I want is to blow up and end up walking the last half of the run, so we'll see.

Anyway remember it's constant slow improvement that adds up to an overall large improvement which is better than getting big chunks and losing it all with an injury.

I picked up the kurt kenetic fluid trainer with there power computer. I don't know how accurate it is but its better then nothing.

Lifted last night. I find it hard not to want to go heavy and really LIFT. I almost feel like I didn't do anything if I don't try to kill myself in the gym. I had planned on going for a run afterwards but the baby is cutting his first tooth and he's not a happy camper and the wife needed my help.

I'm planning on running at lunch today and riding after work for about an hour. I'm going to do the HR Zone thing for my run and bike today and see how it goes.

One question I have about trainer rides...how do you measure distance? If I go for an hour how do I know how far I've gone?

I hooked up a computer to my rear tire, I just bought a cheapo Walmart version for mileage.

Sounds like a jogging stroller is in your future?

HA! Already got one. On my logs when I comment I ran with my wife I can guarantee you I'm pushing the stroller and probably holding the dog too. We got a Jeep one from Baby's R Us for cheap and the thing is amazing.

She's just starting up training regularly after the baby so anything I can do to support her I'm all about. I'm scared once she get's in the pool again because she tones up so fast from swimming...might have another kid before too long. Crap TMI...sorry everyone! Hahaha.

Come to think of it I do have an extra computer I can hook onto the back wheel. Good idea!

That's what I have and by all accounts it's very accurate. I've found it to be a great tool especially for intervals. Every week I see a couple more watts per workout at a lesser heart rate. I think you'll grow to like it. I will say the one disappointing thing about it is you cannot upload the results to your computer.

Here's my TrainerRoad workout from yesterday. Pretty much hit the target power for the full hour, (except for the last interval where I had to answer the phone).  Keeps the trainer workouts interesting trying to adjust cadence and gears to match the target.

Ron,

Are you using a power meter or is that using the cadence and HR to determine power? I need to start bike training and like the roadtrainer program, I am not ready to drop a bunch of money on a power tap.

That is pretty sweet man...

5.2 miles running in 50:11. It's warm out there...Low to mid 80's and the sun is killer. Hopefully it goes back to the 60's and 70's so it feels like "winter" again. Haha.

It's just cadence and HR.  I use the HR strap that came with my Garmin 305 and I have a cadence sensor on the bike.  Only thing I had to buy to use TrainerRoad was the Ant+ USB stick which plugs into my laptop to receive the data.

I think that is what I will be doing, I need to order a bike Pod for my Suunto watch, I already have the HR strap.

I have Cadence on my bike now, but it's an old fashion wired one, I know unheard of!

Scott, so far I love the trainer I will do my own thing with good music next time. How do you get a realstic hill climb on the trainer? When I stand there is no resistance. Do I need to lift the front higher? I was wanting to do some type of hill workout, but I could always just sprint more

I'm assuming by your comments you have a road bike? I have a tri bike so I'm never standing even on the road. For a hill workout I do intervals where the front ring is on the big ring and I start on the easiest gear on the back for my warmup. I then do one minute intervals moving up an additional gear until I'm at the harest. I do two intervals there and work my way back down. By the time I'm on the hardest gear I'm only pushing about 60 RPM and my watts will be over 400 at times. I find this to be a good hill simulation.

Generally the first couple of intervals I stay on the aerobars. Once I can't maintain 90 RPMs I move to the pursuit bars since that's what I would do on the road. After I've gone up and back doing the one minute intervals for power I do longer intervals using the middle gears but trying to keep my cadence higher.
