Quick question, I am looking at getting a GPS-heart rate monitor and I am stuck.  I have done so much research that I think it has just made me more confused.  I have it down to the the Garmin 305 or the Timex Global.  Has anyone had any luck with either of these and which one would you consider.

I have had 3 Running watches.GPS/HRM.  Garmin was the most reliable for me.  I was looking at the 305 and then saw the newer 910.  I am going with the 910.  My buddy who has done two IMs has the 305 and said it is great.  He doesn't where it in open water swims because he doesnt trust the quick release mechanism.

The UPS man delivered my new Garmin 910XT yesterday!!

I meant to comment on this a while back.  Let us know how you like it.  I am most interested in the features and functionality of it in the water.  Does it also do a lot more on the run/bike than say, the 305 I have?  Keep us updated because that is one slick unit.

Wow, even I can read that display without my granny glasses.

Touch-screen, right?

JKreuzig - 2012-01-18 8:40 PM This is my new bike.  Last year I spent the season on my husband's bike.  I wasn't sure this was something I would want to keep doing, so I used his bike.  He is 6 feet tall and I'm 5'4".  Obviously, it didn't fit.  I LOVE my new bike.  I went from riding my husband's carbon fiber Trek to my aluminum Cannondale CAAD 10.  It's unbelievable how a well fit bike makes a difference.  I keep telling everyone that my bike could go up the hills by itself.  I live around the Kettle Moraine state forest and there is no such thing as a flat ride or run.  I have A LOT of big hills, so having a bike that goes uphill by itself it helpful!!!

Nice looking bike and and I'm sure your riding will be much more enjoyable with that vs something for a 6" man!  I just noticed you are in West Bend.  I'm just south of you in Menomonee Falls.  Small world it is.

I noticed you were in Menomonee Falls!!  It is a small world.  I considered sending you a personal message about a possible training ride when the weather finally gets better, but your classification as an extreme veteran is highly intimidating to a newby!

so i did my power tests today, was tough but good. i avged 205 watts for the 5 minute and 154 watts for the 15 minute interval. when i put those numbers into the "cycling zone calculator" on this website the zones it gives me are much easier than i am accustomed to, was there something wrong with what i did?

Me finishing the Mighty Hamptons Triathlon, my face says it all. had a tough bike ride but managed to have a solid but very tiring 10K run

You look like you are giving it your all, right to the end!

As far as cramping and the other posting, I also agree with Birkie on the electrolyte thing.  I rarely experience cramping in my legs....ever.  But all of a sudden I started getting them in my arch when I swam.  I narrowed it down to the push off from the wall and even started to experiment without pushing off at all and suddenly they went away.  I gradually built back to where I could push more aggressively and no longer have that issue.  I think the more you swim, the less you will have that problem (if at all).

Thanks for this advice. My feet and calves cramp a lot in the pool. Seems to happen if I run right before swim. That seems in line with what you and Birkie say.

baaa...."Extreme Veteran" only refers to number of posts and has nothing to do with my physical skills or triathlon ability!  If it did refer to triathlon ability, then mine would likely be something like "Extreme Wannabe".

Thanks for all the awesome pictures. I will definitely look into uploading some to a photo sharing site this weekend and put one or two on there.

Just dropping by to report my 3 miles this morning. Nice and quick, felt really easy. I debated whether to stop at the pool right after and then decided that I better get back to work. Now I kind of regret that, but I might do a pool swim after the kids get home from school today.

Long bike ride planned for tomorrow, maybe 30-ish miles. Yeah, that's long for me. Laughing

Hey Brikierunner...  I was up to the birkie trail this weekend (actually, my FIRST time on skis this winter as there's no snow in Eau Claire...)  and I was reminded of how much room for improvement I have... I just started skiing last year and am wondering if you know of anyone who gives lessons on technique... It would be awesome to know someone in Eau Claire, or in the cities...or where ever - I jsut need help!  Especially technique in climbing - I feel pretty good on the flats but alas, the Birkie AIN'T FLAT!!

Sorry I didn't get back to you on this sooner.  Nope...the Birkie ain't flat...its a freakin' darn hard course.  Climbing technique is essential to preventing premature fatigue.  I really don't know anyone in Eau Claire that gives lessons.  Is there a ski shop in town that you could start inquiring at?  If you're willing to come up my way, try calling my friend Frank Lundeen at Cyclova XC ski and bike shop in St. Croix Falls, WI  I think he has given folks lessons at Trollhaugen Ski Area that has dedicated x-c ski trails with snowmaking and lighting.  He has a lot of connections in the ski world in MN and WI so he may know of someone in the Eau Claire area.

I used to be a x-c ski instructor in high school for a resort that catered to weekend tourists from New York City.  One weekend a woman who was terrified to be on skis asked me for a private lesson - yes a ski lesson LOL.  After the lesson she tried to give me a huge tip, but I was so naive back then that I refused the tip and said, "they pay me here at the resort".  How stupid was I?  Actually, it felt good to help her overcome her fear of being on skis.

We've had a few folks tell us what's up on the docket for this weekend.  Post your big plans!!!   Hopefully tomorrow I'll be heading up to Cable, WI to ski the Birkie Tour (25k option) as a workout.  Haven't been on skis yet this year, ughhhh

I would like to get a 4 or 5 mile run in today. Tomorrow I'm xc skiing near Snoqualmi Pass with friends. Two weeks ago we were at Crystal Springs and got to watch part of a dogsled race. Sunday I have a O50 soccer game.

I'm supposed to do a long ride this weekend but I just don't think my foot is up to it.  I've been on my indoor trainer a few times this week but can only last up to about 45 minutes then the foot really starts to throb.   I'm just going to swim a bit more before I push the bike.  IM California is getting close so I hope this thing heals up quick!!!

On a good note I'm going to a natural running clinic tomorrow morning put on by Newton.  Should be very informative....

Hoping to run 8-10 miles tomorrow--it is darn cold and supposed to be -5 (bf windchill) at 7 am when I meet my friend. Time to break out the balaclava!

Spin class and maybe a swim or weights on Sunday.  Indoors!

Started the weekend off on a bad foot, turned onto our road last night and slid on the snow causing me to slide across the other lane and hit the curb, caused about 1000 in damage to the rear arm, bearings and wheel. So when I took it I today, I decided to run home and use it as part of my long run. knocked out 7 miles in -8 degree temps and now relaxing. Longer ride tomorrow!

Sorry about the damage to your bike, Jeff. It's good that you didn't get hurt, though.

About 26 miles on the bike today in very windy conditions. The last five miles, I mostly drafted off of my husband. It was a great workout!

I was off of refined sugar for the whole week and then *forgot* and ate a brownie this afternoon. ARG! Sugar is kind of an addiction for me, and I find that if I avoid it, the cravings go away and I can do without sweet things so much more easily.

Jim, thanks for the tip with the photo albums here on BT. I'm going to do that.

Good swim for me this morning.  Speed work... main 20x50, held 30-35s on 1's and pretty pleased that it's hard to hold my arms up to type today!    Good feeling.  90 min run later today, not sure if i'll hit the trails or hang out on the TM and watch a movie!?

Jeff... car I'm assuming!  was it slow motion type of deal?  Glad you are ok!  Most people can run 7 miles period, much less in -8 degree temps after a fender bender!!!

Yep in the car. I have always said the corner is nasty and sure enough.

With a 1.5 hour trainer ride today, I will have hit all workouts for week 1 of 16 leading into Rev3 Knoxville (first race of the season). It is nice having a target to focus on.

Sounds like quite the workout!  I am hoping to do 100x100 at the end of the year, just to say I did Care to join?  Did you ever end up joining at LA Fitness?
