Member ![]() | ![]() TriGuyBri - 2012-04-11 9:15 PM amhale2000 - 2012-04-11 2:42 PMI've sort of been MIA for a bit, my half marathon is this Sunday so the past few weeks have been mainly focused on that training with spinning 1x a week. I'll have one week off after that and then Sunday the 22nd my official HIM training starts (finally!) so I'll be giving more frequent updates that include more than just running. Have a great race at the Half. Looking forward to a race report.I am doing a Practice Half this weekend (14 miler- last long run) in prep for my Half Marathon on April 29th in Eugene Oregon. We have a couple in our group that this will be their longest run ever so we are going to celebrate after with a tailgate party. The Half on the 29th for me will be a fun run with a couple of other runners who run at my same pace. I haven't run with anyone else in any race previously so I am kind of looking forward to it.![]() Thanks, I'm looking forward to it! I PR'd last fall with not having as much consistent training as I have for this one so I'm hoping (fingers crossed) to improve upon that time and come out with a new PR. I'll definitely post my race report Edited by amhale2000 2012-04-12 10:28 AM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning! I got an easy run done last night, followed by a lifting workout. I was going to go to yoga this morning, but I had gotten home so late from my workout yesterday that I slept in.... I might go to a class at noon. Track workout tonight, and for additional exercise, I'm biking to/from the track, which is about 7-8 miles away. I don't listen to music when I work out (except for lifting and yoga since there's music at the gym/yoga studio). I live in the Chicago, so I think it's dangerous to be listening. I've just known too many people getting into accidents from people not paying attention. This include runners who aren't paying attention and can't hear when cyclist call out. One girl I know broke her elbow after being hit by a bike because she didn't hear the cyclist calling out behind her, and she turned in front of him. It's even worse running in the neighborhoods, where you have to battle with cars, too. For my first half marathon, I didn't really train for it specifically. I had done 3 Olympic tris that summer, and then forgot I had registered for a half until the week before... Did an 8-miler one week before the race, and then did the half. I'm guessing my endurance from the Oly's was what carried me through, since it takes much shorter to do a HM than an Oly tri. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Welcome back!
I had a good swim today. I left master's a little early since my toe was sore and I didn't want to over do it, but it feels fine now so I'm happy. 2k of mixed sprint and kicking. Amazing that I didn't feel any different after two weeks off. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Was able to PR an 11.6 mile training run today. I shaved 1:00 off of time and ran it in a 7:54/mi pace. 2 miles were into a strong headwind, or I think I may have done a little better. I have a 2 hour bike, and am hoping to get outside, rather than in on the spin bike. Question: Do any of you ride in the dark to sunrise before work. I did earlier in the week, and noticed a few potential HAZARDS. (potholes not seen, rocks, not being visible to drivers.) I have flashing lights on the front and back of bike, and the roads travelled are country roads not too busy at 5:00 a.m. Rest day Saturday 22 mile long run Sunday. Tomorrow's Friday! |

I've never done any rides in the dark. When I would ride to work in the early morning in my undergrad when I was working at a golf course it was light enough by 430 to ride in during the summer. But I live more north so our days can get pretty long! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My husband did Eco Challenge and few other adventure races when they were big. He used to go mountain biking all night long for training. Sometimes I would pick him up somewhere or meet him for dinner a few hours away. I would be more worried on a road bike though as they don't deal with the unexpected as well and the speeds are much higher. Do you have one of those fancy headlights? I actually know a bunch of people who mountain bike at night with them.
ETA- I used to ride home from grad school in the dark a lot - but again on a mountain bike. The flashy lights are pretty visible- here you legally need a headlight and a tail light. (I have also hid in the bushes from the cops when I didn't play on staying at the climbing gym after dark and they started chasing my friend and I.) Edited by Moonrocket 2012-04-12 10:47 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm more guilty of riding after sunset than I am of riding before sunrise. I have a pretty bright flashing headlight and tail light, so that seems to do that trick. But I live in the city, so there are always street lights... so my bike lights are more for the purpose of being seen by others, rather than lighting my way. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Pretty good day for me yesterday. Biked to work, yoga at noon, biked to track practice, had my first track practice of the season, then biked to dinner to meet up w/friends, and finally biked home. All said and done, I biked about 90 minutes (only 20 miles though- I was riding my single speed through city streets, so definitely not fast). Up for today: yoga and lifting. I was planning on swimming, but I called my gym and found out that the pool is going to be closed until May 1st. So I guess I have a reprieve for now! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() rydergal - 2012-04-11 4:27 PM I did it! Wow that was 500m more then I have ever swam and only 800m short of IM distance! It wasn't fast by any means but I got it done! Definintly a break through for me since swimming is my weakest. QUESTION- for you all, Do you train with or without music? I always train with music but on races you can't. I have heard mixed thoughts, training without is better so that on race day you don't rely on it....but I think we do so much training for our races that why not pep it up a bit and listen to music especially to get through those tougher training days!!! Comments??? and on that note, any favorite songs out there you listen to while training? I need to re-do my HM play list! First off - congrats on the swim... I too am building up volume but 3000 seems like a daunting distance. Way to go! As far as the music goes... I don't have waterproof headphones and I don't want to get run over by a car, so I don't listen when I'm swimming and biking. But I do listen when I run and I tend to run stronger because of it. I've thought about not listening - but I figure that the adreniline more than makes up for it. Just my two cents... Finally - non-alcoholic beer... Seriously? |

Finally - I think you will like running a race with someone. Not only does it kill time, but you have someone to lean on when you need moral support! Good luck! |

Back from Va Beach for vacation/conference and in one word yes Ha Ha - now that's funny... I have three kids - 3, 10, and 11. However, what I would say is that it's more exasperating... I can understand why my three year old acts the way she does - but my boys are so moody - ugh, they drive me nuts at times... |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Went out for a ride this afternoon with a friend of mine who is way older than I am. He's 57 and has been biking for 40 years and rides about 3,000 miles a year. He went out for 20 and HE. KICKED. MY. ! I was going pretty hard for the entire ride and he kept having to slow down... But it was a great ride! Being pushed showed me how far I've come since I started getting back into shape in November. And it also showed me how far I have to go. But the best part was that I learned a ton by watching him ride... I've got a pretty good weekend planned. I'm taking a road trip with my two boys to Phily and New York. My oldest son wants to eat chinese food in China Town. The younger son wants to go to a Phillies game, and I'm gonna try to sneak in a brewery. Long run on Sunday. Have a good one! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sorry for the long chain of notes - but one more quick question: When I came back from my ride today, I kept smelling ammonia... it was like someone was using smelling salts... my wife couldn't smell it but it was pretty strong. Melissa - does this have something to do with being dehydrated? |

New user![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm continuing to struggle along in my progress. The 750m swim is pretty well ok (I did it most recently on Tuesday and it wasn't too tough to get it done in under 22 minutes despite the lanes being pretty crowded). In all honesty, this is going to be a lesser part of the training going forward as I think I pretty well am confident in where I stand with this. The bike is still killing me as the route I'm taking is about a 1.8km loop, where its about 500m mild uphill, 500m downhill, and 800m flat; the uphill is just making me want to quit every time I come around that corner and I haven't successfully completed the 20km on a real bike yet (a couple times on the stationary at the gym but not exactly on super tough settings). I'm not even really sure why this is proving so tough, other than that I haven't been on a bike in a long time - I really need to work on this more, so I hope it stops raining in the next couple days. The run is probably not going to be an endurance issue, but just a speed issue; I have never been very fast to begin with, and certainly gaining a lot of weight hasn't done anything to help it. I ran the 5K on the track at the gym today in 44:30 but it was a pretty tough task. The last thing I'm struggling with is just the mental aspect of the bike and run; it just seems so easy to stop even when I really know I could probably keep going. To reference something else a few people have talked about - I found this a bit easier with headphones+music but I am trying not to use them as I want to train in the way that I'll compete. |

Okay, the fact that you can run a 5k is a great start! You can swim the 750m, you can ride a bike for 20k. Train consistently and you WILL get it done. The great thing is you will be able to see how much you improve with training and weight loss. Soon you will wonder why you were even concerned! Keep on going and stay active in the group! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Pinker- that's awesome that you've nailed all of the sports! I agree with the just keep going and you will be amazed at the results! I really found when I started this New Years resolution challenge that logging my workouts was vet motivational. I still tend to have a minor panic about a quarter into my workout that I can't complete it. The more I hit the workouts on my training plan though the more confidence I got. Are you following a training plan?I went on a gorgeous mountain bike ride with my husband tonight. We got a baby sitter to celebrate our anniversary (it was a few days ago) and decided to go out for a ride. We almost never ride together anymore so it was a lot of fun. |

It's great that you are continuing to get out there and taking a crack at these workouts. It takes time to build up a good fitness base and just starting out it can be especially frustrating. You just have to stay persistent and keep an eye on your goals. I remember when I started years ago and how tough some of those workouts were. I kept at it and things eventually got easier and I'm sure they will for you too! thor67 - 2012-04-14 3:17 AM Punker - 2012-04-13 2:44 PM I'm continuing to struggle along in my progress. Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I hope everyone is having a good weekend so far. I had to bail on a planned 10k this morning. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() About a 15 mile training run this morning; felt pretty good after. Wonderful tailgate after. Hit the Half-marathon mileage in a time faster than my Jan Half race. Of course I was sick going into that half, but it felt good having a comparison time and knwoing I am further along. Garmin was a bit messed up at the start had to restart it; wasn't counting mileage or pace ( I think it was on bike mode); hate it when that happens!!! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() kevinbe - 2012-04-07 9:51 AM Question. It's my scheduled rest day. On Saturdays, my wife goes to WW meeting and works out at gym. I stay home and watch the kids. On Sunday I get my long run in. This week I have a 21 miler planned. My legs are more sore than usual. IDK if it's from standing all day fishing on Thursday or my run yesterday. My question is this. I'm training a HIM plan on this site and it calls for a long ride that I've conveniently missed due to weather for too many weeks. I am currently on last part of building for marathon in May, and have sacrificed so much on the bike to get longer runs in. Would I be overkilling it if I hit a ride today, then went out for long run tomorrow, given my legs are a little wobbly as is? My HIM is in August, and I had originally planned on picking up riding volume immensely after May marathon, but I feel as though I'm missing key elements of the plan by not getting the rides in consistently. Hoping you chose to rest and not risk injury prior to the upcoming mary. |

Last week I could not even run a mile and half without having to walk and feeling horrible. Today, got a 5K in at a 10:48 pace....I know not fast but I was just happy to get it done this week. The run was still a bit of a struggle but its the start of getting back on track. Hopefully the flu symptoms are over and I can move on with training and get back to where I was a few weeks ago. |
