GOALS ---  Are simple .. Get faster then last year, tired or being 4th or 5th in AG.. Gotta get thru that mental block that i can do better and need to push harder. Hopefully with training smarter and sooner I can manage to place in AG.

  1. Are you looking to simply finish a race of a certain distance?
  2. Better your time at that distance?
  3. Place in your age group?
  4. Just get more fit?
  5. Become better at a specific discipline?

1. I could never just finish a race. I have to give it everything I have. I want to be 1st!

3. I defininitely want to place in my AG, but it would be nice to place overall too.

4. Getting more fit is happening everyday. I'm starting to feel like I did 20 years ago.

5. Better at  a specific discipline? Oh ya! My running. I'm starting to see the improvements already, but I won't be happy till I am 10x better!

So, good to see all these new faces here. Looks like it will be fun this season. It's the same old story here. Picking and choosing the days outside because of weather. One day snowing, another raining, winds and cold. I've just been toughing it out and going anyway. I just can't take training in the gym. I also got to train with the South Korean Olympic swim team this week. It's like a guppy swimming with baracudas. LOL They are fast! I am learning some good techniques. It's a graet experience. My body is feeling great and I haven't had any back problems in sooo long it's scary.

Well, back to work. Everyone stay healthy and train hard!

Great to hear you're feeling good Stan. Congratulations to Matt on an AWESOME 5K PR and Congratulations to Kate (Via Jonathan) on her HM PR. Sub-2 is an awesome time!

I have to post and run, but I had a question for all you bike gurus - I have regular platforms on my bike at the moment and from many years of horse riding I tend to turn my toes in somewhat when I ride. As I've raised the bike mileage, this has led to some pain in my left knee (not super painful, but enough to know its not tiredness). The question two questions are these:

1) Could my foot turning in while riding cause knee soreness, and

2) Would correctly adjusted clipless pedals help alleviate the issue with better positional support/control?

I've heard/read they help keep your leg better aligned, which sounds like it would help - what do those with experience think?

Thanks!

John

While on the topic of bikes... for those of us not inclined to pay for a professional bike fit, any suggestions on how to ensure that our bikes our properly set up?  I know bike fit is everything and I would hate to get injured from lack of proper bike setup!  I had this thought of taking a side picture of myself on my bike to determine the angle of different locations and such, but does anyone have any comments on this?  (Am I making sense? Laughing)

Now that we are full we can get down to business.

It seems that many of you have swimming as a top focus judging by your bio's.  I am going to re-post my side swim video and end swim video for everyone to view if you would like to see it.  I am also going to ask Jonathon to post a video too.  After all, he has the current groups speed record in the water but I may have to see if I can chase him down.  But with 1:10 for his last 100 yards I am not feeling real good about it.

I also think that if you all can find someone, and have a camera available, you should post a video for evaluation.  Remember, many of you are newer athletes and may not be the best swimmers and that is perfectly fine.  Everyone starts someplace and you will be able to see yourself improve by using video as a tool.

In an effort to get to know each other better, post what your expectations are for this year on your personal racing circuit.

  1. Are you looking to simply finish a race of a certain distance?
  2. Better your time at that distance?
  3. Place in your age group?
  4. Just get more fit?
  5. Become better at a specific discipline?

I'll start.  My goals for this racing season are:

  1. Place in my AG in at least 2 of the 5 planned races
  2. Complete 2 - 70.3 races toward the end of the season
  3. Place high enough in my AG at the Warsaw Optimist to qualify for the AG Nationals again.

I only have time to post this vid before heading out for wedding registry stuff.  We filmed this and found some mistakes in my stroke at slow speed.  Anyone able to find them in this video???

Also, I'm very happy to say that my fiance Kate PR'd her half marathon this morning, beating her goal of sub 2 hrs by over two minutes.  Very excited for her.  She's a happy camper.

The first thing I'll say is that it looks like you camera man has a depth perception problem when he's underwater.  Is the camera okay?  Other than that it looks like your hand is close to exiting the water about the same time as your elbow and it looks like your hands seem to bend at the fingers to catch and pull rather than bend at the wrist.

More importantly tell Kate Congrats on her HM PR!  Sounds like you need to get your run times down or she's gonna be overtaking you soon.

  1. Yes!  If you are turning your foot to far outward you can add stress to the knee joint.
  2. Clipless pedals and shoes can definitely help with better alignment.  Cycling shoes are far more positionally rigid than toe clips and it should help get a better alignment.
I'll let Jeff or Jonathon give a better idea about how proper shoe fitting should be done.

Now that I can see again and I survived a day of shopping and yard work I can finally take a crack at posting my goals for the season with next season in mind as well. I apologize the list is long but this is what I am thinking I would like to accomplish.

Welcome Samantha and sorry to hear about the struggles you have gone through over the past couple of seasons. It's good to see you back and hopefully things will be better for you this year and you'll get to do a few races this season.

Congrats to Matt and to Jonathan's finance Kate on the PR's today in the 5K and Half-Marathon.

So as far as the goals go here they are:

1. Have fun and enjoy the experience. Meet other triathlete's and share experiences and inspire each other and hopefully others.
2. Learn as much as I can about triathlon this season. Use this season as a learning experience to educate and prepare for next year. Not just S/B/R aspects but everything from nutrition to the gear/equipment I use.
3. Finish all the races in the best possible time I can. Not worried about PR's or placement in age group.
4. Learn to pace myself in all the races.
5. Complete a sprint triathlon (Registered for two so far)
6. Complete a olympic triathlon (Registered for one so far)
7. Complete a half iron distance (Registered for one)
8. Run NYC Marathon (In the lottery so if I get picked I will do it this year if not this is the 3rd year in a row so I will get in automatically next year before they do away with this system)
9. Self evaluation. Evaluate and identify the areas where I need to improve the most and work on those in the offseason.
10.Develop and execute the plan for a run at an IM triathlon in 2013, hopefully NYC. This season is the start of the plan.

Samantha, you are making perfect sense with the idea to take some pics.  There are some of things to keep in mind when taking the pics.

  1. Wear tight fitting shorts so leg alignment can be seen.
  2. Take pics with your feet at the highest and lowest points of the cycle.  (This should be done with so both legs can be seen at the high and lows.
  3. If you use aero bars (Clip-ons or have a tri bike) you need to be in position on the areo's to help with body positioning.
I suggest that anyone post these pics if you have questions.

In an effort to get to know each other better, post what your expectations are for this year on your personal racing circuit.

  2. Better your time at that distance?
  3. Place in your age group?
  4. Just get more fit?
  5. Become better at a specific discipline?

Goals?  My main goal is to improve on every race that I completed last year.  For instance a few weeks back I ran a 22:47 in a 5K, which was exactly 10m faster than what I ran exactly a year a go.  Today I completed the Sting 5K, here is Race Report:  Before reading know that last year in the same race I finished in 30:09 and in 109th place.  For those of you new to the group, a big emphasis is placed on running a lot of miles, with 99.9999% of it being at an easy pace.  Feel free to use me as an example at how succesfull this method can be.

Other goals:

  1. Go 1:45 in the Glass City HM (yeah I set a time)
  2. Knock 15m off my finish time at Maumee Bay (1:28 target)
  3. Complete a HIM in August!
  4. And the most important, have as much fun as I possibly can.

and the last note.......  The bike build is done!  Well mostly, I have to have someone help me get the gears dialed just right.  I have them close but there is still some noise and jumping that I want to get taken care of.  Best thing is up to now I have done everything myself!  Now if I could only change a flat tire Surprised.  I will definitely be posting pics to get the right positioning!

Go fast machine

Jeff: If I somehow missed saying it: THANK YOU

Happy Easter everyone!!!  No training for me since I will be at the outlaw's house.

Yesterday at the triathlon, a biker was hit by a car.  A policeman was directing traffic and they either ignored the police or didn't see the officer.  When the lady left in the ambulance, she had a broken collar bone for sure, not sure what else.  Ya'll be careful out there.  Please pray for her to be OK.

Last weekend, during a running race, a police was directing traffic and a guy in a truck got mad or in a hurry and tried to get around the officer, the mirror hit the officer, and it was bad.  The offficer had a busted head, ribs etc...

Happy Easter to all.  No training for me this morning, although I hope to get a tempo run in this afternoon and maybe a short bike.  The bike is kind of a question mark because I just came of a pretty big bike week for me.  I got 160 miles of riding in last week because our pool was closed and there was no chance for any swimming.  Anyway, no training this morning because I have a sound check and short band practice before our church has breakfast and our regular service time.

I may be pretty well spent from playing today.  We are playing a musically heavy service with much of the music at a pretty high tempo.  Last night during practice I had my in ear monitors taped to my tech shirt and by the end of practice it was beginning to peel off from moisture (sweat) being drawn away from my skin.  Well, if nothing else I'll get a little bit of cardio work from playing drums this morning.

______________

Karl,

I had heard of something similar happening in a race a couple of years ago to a friend of mine.  We were doing a relay and he had the bike leg.  He got to a corner where a cop had everything under control and someone tried to push around him came dangerously close to nailing my friend on his bike.  The situation had been made worse by another cyclist who had ignored my friends "passing" warnings and swung left on her bike to make the corner a little faster.

Anyway, it is pretty dangerous while riding and it takes a lot of defensive driving techniques to keep yourself and your bike in safe operation.  Hopefully the lady that was injured will be fine and be able to get past the injuries and get back to racing sooner rather than later.

I have been hearing so many stories of cyclists being hit by cars. It has really made an impact on where and how I ride this year. I just no longer feel safe on the road. I was inches from being hit by a totally clueless drives last year while making a left turn into my own neighborhood. I signaled with my arm and she began to pull out. I glared at her through the window like what are you doing and I guess she got nervous, maybe she did not see me originally, she hit the GAS then thankfully freaked and hit the break. This is the same corner that I fell down in the gravel on later in the year. I keep putting the 2 incidents together in my mind - the old what if - what if I would have fallen the day the clueless driver hit the gas??  I drive my bike out of the neighborhood to start my rides now.

Also a rest day for me. I'm waiting for my kids to wake up so we can hunt Easter Eggs. I used my 3:30 a.m. wake up to play Easter Bunny and stuff/hide the eggs last night. Thankfully I managed to fall back asleep this time! So today we'll have a egg hunt at home, big breakfast, then church, and travel a couple of hours to spend Easter with my family.

I finally had sweets last night and you know what? They weren't that great and I felt really awful after I ate them! Booo!

Here comes my son - looks like it's time to get this party started!!

Have a great day everyone!

Happy Easter to everyone. I hope everyone enjoys the day spending time with your families. No day off today for me unfortunately I did that yeaterday. It is a beautiful day here in NY and I am hoping to get at least a 25 to 30 mile bike ride followed by an 8 mile run. Wish I had gotten started earlier but went to bed way too late last night. I can't agree more with everyone on being safe especially when out biking. It is my number one priority when I am out riding and fortunately I have found some very quiet areas in the neighborhood to ride where traffic is minimal. Enjoy your Easter Sunday and be safe if you are heading out today.

This brings up a really good point.

With the weather breaking for most of us that will mean we are out on the roads a lot.  Whether off the treadmill or the trainer most of our training will begin to be outside and our exposure to road hazards will increase.  So I thought I would advise a couple of tips for safety sake:

  1. Ride with traffic and run against traffic.  (There should only be a couple of instances when this principle wouldn't apply.)
  2. If running in low light situations (mostly happens during the winter for me) hake sure you are wearing lights and/or carrying one.  I suggest NOT riding in low light but if you do be VERY well lit.
  3. Ride in the right tire track of the road you are on.  If you do this it will force people to get into the other lane when they go around you and give you someplace to go besides the ditch if the driver starts pinching you.
  4. When making turns ALWAYS signal, as Dina did, AND place your bike in the left tire track of the lane your turning from.  Doing this will force traffic to recognize your signal and hopefully wait on your turn.
  5. Stop at stop signs.  Especially when there is traffic anywhere near the intersection.  Now that I've said that, I don't ALWAYS stop at stop signs, but I am most certainly sure there is NO traffic coming to the intersection AT ALL.
  6. If possible ride/run on rural roads. If you cannot, stay on sidewalks when running in higher traffic situations.

Anyone else can add points as needed.

Now I am done "fathering" you all and you may return to your regularly scheduled training regimen.

Happy Easter everyone!

I had a good long run yesterday. 6.7 miles in 1 hour and 1 second. My first training run of one hour or more, and my longest training run to date. My legs feel a little sore today, but it's a productive soreness. Smile

Yesterday afternoon my family went out to Wiskeytown Lake and I swam open water in my wetsuit for the first time ever. Water temps were somewhere around 50 degrees. It was COLD! My face was red for a couple hours afterward from the cold. The wetsuit felt great though so I have no worries about next Sunday's swim.

No rest for me today. After we got home from church services this morning and the girls hunted Easter eggs in the back yard, I went for a 2.5 mile run to test out my new Timex Ironman Global Trainer.  I got it in a trade with my dad for a Makarov pistol that I was considering selling. Dad had received the GPS watch as a gift from my cousin a year or so ago and it had never come out of the box. I told him I was going to sell the pistol and he offered the trade. I didn't even know he had the watch. Win!

Now we're off to my grandparents house. Four generations getting together this afternoon.

Samantha same here for me, I ride down near the water where there is little to no traffic but its always windy where I live and today it was crazy but I am figuring that it will probably pay off in the long run. One other funny thing happened though since everyone was talking about road safety and all it finally happened to me at the end of my ride coming up the lawn at my house I did not clip in time and over I went. It was the first time that happened to me. I know rookie mistake and I have been very mindful to make sure I unclip before I stop but not this time. I think I was rushing to get in so I could transition to my run quickly. I learned my lesson it was the first time but I am sure it will not be the last. Not bad though 27.5 miles on the bike and I got in an 8 mile run.

Dirk that was a good post for the rules of riding safely. One more thing to add if you haven't gotten a Road ID I think it is an inexpensive worthwhile investment. I don't ride without mine.

Happy Easter!

No day off for me. The life of a Chef, no holidays off.

Today was the nicest day I have seen in weeks. I decided to make the best of it. I decided to do a brick workout today. Biked 30+ miles and a 3+mile run. I pushed at a moderate pace and didn't overdo it. I stiil have to work today. I must be the only one that I know of that really likes to run after a bike ride. My legs are warmed up and the run feels almost effortless.  A very enjoyable morning. The next few days is the same old crappy weather.

I'm really hoping that Thur. or Fri. is nice. I plan on tackling part of the Century course I have planned June 30th. I want to break the course up into 2 rides in the next few weeks and get a good feel for it. I have a link to the elevation graph: http://www.altaalpina.org/challenge/links/3PassProfile.jpg

Hope evryone is having a great Easter with friends and family.

Subject: RE: Asphalt Junkies CLOSED AND GETTING OUR FIX

Happy Easter, Friends!  I hope you all have had a great weekend.

It looks like my plan to officially start training today has been bungled by Easter.  I will take my dog for a long walk/run when I get back tonight and hit the ground running early tomorrow morning.

Jonathan, thank you for the tip on the August race.  I'm looking for one that will let me get out of town for a long weekend.

I have been flopping around with the sprint training plans on BT.  Would you/you guys recommend one over the other for a newbie? Especially one that will help me with the running?

Answering Dirk's questions...  My goal this year is to simply finish a couple of sprint tris and hopefully the olympic in September.  I just want to have fun, get more fit and learn to like/maybe even love running.  I am very competitive so I anticipate I will want to improve my time as the year progresses.
