Since it's just me and the hubby this year, we decided to go for a drive and drove to CT to see the Rev3 Quassy course today instead of next week. O.M.G. I'm more than a little scared now. I know it sounds ridiculous, but honestly, I'm scared of having a bad 'tune up' race, and it destroying my confidence for IMLP. I know many will say just do the training and it'll be fine, but I'm a worrier, and dont have a ton of faith in my ability so now I'm torn. :-/ Its not as scary as you think, I promise. There are several course preview rides before the race -- you should think about doing one. You also bring up a really good point about "good" races versus "bad" races. A lot of times are goals are things we have no or very little control over -- such as a specific finish time or a specific place. Going into a race I think its really important to have goals you have control over -- having a good attitude, going out hard on the swim, hitting a certain watts, HR or pace on the run, running the entire run course and then letting the chips fall on the things you don't have control over. On a course like Rev 3, your overall time is going to be slower than on a flatter course, so I think focusing on other things can be really helpful.

It was so nice to be with family. I see many of you are looking at revamping your diets. I need to look at making some changes myself. I drink one glass of water a day, so that's the first change I'm needing to make. I really have some unhealthy habits. I just really don't like water. I had to force myself to drink water when pregnant. The only thing I can say about the water thing is to try and add some flavoring to it - lemon, lime, etc. Fortunately I don't have that problem as it's the only thing I drink besides coffee. And music on runs...not so much now because I can't listen during tris so I decided to eliminate the music. I have a Pear device and listen to the trainer instead. LolHope everyone has a great night. Random question: how many of you listen to music on your runs? I'm with you on both of these. I just drink water. Usually filtered water, but just water. Other than lemon or lime most additives to water contain lots of chemicals, which I try to avoid. As far as music goes, I think running without music is the best bet. If you train with music it can be difficult to adjust to no music on race. I have to ask -- what is a Pear device? |

Well, I won't give you that advice because I am not confident in my abilities yet either...which is why I haven't committed to an HIM. And I don't have the time for the training I would need to do. I've found that men are generally over confident in their abilities and women are generally under confident. Rev 3 doesn't sell out quickly. I think there's any harm in doing a few blocks of training, seeing how you feel and talking about your concerns with your coach. If an "easy"* course is going to give you the mental boost you need for IMLP, I think that may be the way to go. * I am of the mindset that there are no "easy" triathlon course -- some courses are just faster than others, they all hurt. |

Pro 4672 Nutmeg State | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED Seeing that we're approaching the new year its getting close to resolution time. I was wondering what are everyone's resolutions / goals? My two serious triathlon related ones are: (1) getting to race weight (which for me is probably about 145lbs); and (2) going sub 11 at an IM (which mean a realistic shot at qualifying for Kona depending on the field). My health related goals are: (1) cutting out as much sugar as possible (I need MAJOR help with this one and would love to hear from those of you who have successfully done it); and (2) sleeping more. I tend to run a huge sleep deficit and I need to work on getting more quality sleep. |

I think ideally, I'd ride it before I made a decision. Any idea when it sold out last year? I want to say I registered in April. Rev 3 is really good about posting when races are about to sell out. I would follow them on FB. You can also shoot the race director an e-mail to get a better idea. Patriot in MA is a little later in June but is a really well run race and a pretty fast course. I've done the race several times and I believe Scott has done it as well. |

Extreme Veteran 418 Texas | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED kaburns1214 I have to ask -- what is a Pear It's called Pear Square One from Pear Sports. It's a biofeedback training system that uses a wireless heart rate monitor and foot pod to measure the body's response to a workout. It gives real time coaching, letting you know heart rate, pace, cadence, distance, calories burned. It gives form pointers, let's you know what heart rate zone I'm working in. It's a pretty cool device. You can attach a iPod to it if you want to listen to music, too. I need all the help I can get with my training. It allows you to upload some free programs or you can purchase more advance programs. Edited by luv2bhealthy 2012-12-25 7:39 PM |

This seems like a pretty structred plan to follow, and I could begin to incorporate runs and swims with it. Any thoughts? Thanks. |
