I tried running for the first time in 3+ weeks yesterday after injuring my ankle, and sadly after only doing 2M, it hurt a bit again. I iced it right afterward, then, am planning on taking today off of running and trying just 1M tomorrow. Taking time off doesn't seem to be helping it, and I've never had this issue before when my mileage was high, so I'm thinking I just need to strengthen it up, albeit very slowly. We'll see how that goes... That stinks. Any chance of getting in the pool instead to limit the impact on the ankle? I did a 10k on Jan 1 but haven't ran after that at all because I had some pain in my foot after the race but the pool time seems to help, maybe rotating it enough to stretch but not enough to hurt? Not sure. I haven't swam since September, but have been meaning to get back in the water soon, maybe even tomorrow morning if I get the chance. I'll see if that has any effect on things. I do know it doesn't bother me on the bike, so that's a plus at least! Also, no, Chris, I haven't had it checked out. It's not incredibly painful, so between it being the off season and that, I haven't been motivated enough to deal with all of the hoops required to make an appointment. Hooray HMOs! :P If my current plan to further decrease my current distance combined with more rigorous icing doesn't pay off, I'll definitely be looking into it at that point. I've never had a running injury I couldn't take care of myself, so if that's the case here, it's new territory for me... Edited by KiterChick 2013-01-09 1:10 PM |

I think this is actually the problem, I can imagine if I put my foot too far forward then it's sort of working against my momentum? Please keep it coming guys I'm taking it all in! Exactly |

Member 30 Columbus, OH | Subject: RE: Leegoocrap & Newbz rowdy Mentor Group - Closed Went and sat on a few new bikes yesterday, after trying several on the trainer I think I have I narrowed down to the Felt z85 or the giant defy 1... A little upgrade from what I was looking at before but the shiamano 150 groupset felt awesome and I want it now. I also came to find that the bike I'm currently riding is way too small,as I had assumed... I think it's a 52 and I got fit to a 58! They felt like clouds compared to my current ride. The LBS is going to get some more stock sizes in and let me ride them outside before I make any sort of decision, so it won't be till spring or a break in the weather in a couple weeks (wont have it by this weekend with temps supposed to be 60 in Ohio!) |

Veteran 976 New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Leegoocrap & Newbz rowdy Mentor Group - Closed Got a good swim in tonight. I had a great rhythm going, even did a 100 at 1:45 (which is amazing for me seeing as I've been going for 2 weeks and still have a tendency to sink, and fast). It just felt good. It felt fast (remember, relative) without killing myself. Then on what turned out to be my last lap, my left calf cramped up like nothing I've ever felt. I had to stop and hobble out of there during what felt like an awesome swim. Lifeguard even came over to make sure I was alright haha. I'll get back at it on Saturday morning. |

Member 30 Columbus, OH | Subject: RE: Leegoocrap & Newbz rowdy Mentor Group - Closed I got in a 1200y swim last nigt too. I felt 'ok', but there was a high school swim practice going on so only 1 lane was open to members. I had to share a lane with 4 people and it was difficult to get into a rhythm.. I have no problems sharing a lane, but there was a wide variety of skill and purpose there.... So it was slow going. |

The pool at the Y I go to is tiny but it's also always empty. Most people I saw doing laps at once was 3 and there were enough open lanes for all. I'd feel bad for the person in my lane because I imagine I just take up a lot of lane. |

Extreme Veteran 1574 | Subject: RE: Leegoocrap & Newbz rowdy Mentor Group - Closed I like to swim at 6:00 a.m. and then run at night. This way I knock out two workouts in one day without really stressing myself. Naturally I will also do bricks but that is more of practice than workouts in my eyes. As far as if it is necessary, can you go without sure, but I feel you SHOULD perform bricks (manly bike to run) on a fairly regular bases before a race to acclimated your legs and body to what you will be asking of them on race day. And if many of you do, could you give me an example of your schedule for those days? Bit of a strange question... I almost always train twice a day. You can check out my logs, but for the most part it's a run in the morning and either a swim or bike in the afternoon... although it's a bit reversed right now due to class rides at the lbs in the afternoon. When that's not happening I generally swim in the a.m. At a certain point it will become a necessity to continue to improve, but only after a good base is worked out (and you've come to a point where you need to split days up to get in enough workouts) and you slowly get used to the added stress. |

Well, dedicated or you have even more screwed up work hours than me. Couldn't pass this up because it made me think of those Ironman Animations on You Tube were the guy can't go out on a date because he has to be in bed really early for his morning workout. |

I've been doing about 2 a week. One being a brick and then I typically like to pair a swim and a bike on the same day. Running is a little harder on the body, but I think it would be good to run first and then either swim or bike later in the day to help stretch out the legs. Plus doing 2 workouts a day gives me another opportunity for a day off elsewhere in the week!I have a question about training twice a day... Is it necessary? Since I currently am limiting my running to 1M at a time because of my ankle, I don't think I'll be entering myself into any road races soon... What I am hoping for this weekend is to get in an outdoor ride on Sunday. It's supposed to be pretty warm, and hopefully a decent amount of the ice will have melted off so it won't be slippery. I'm glad I have the trainer, but I do miss getting outside! |

Ever since I saw this on the forecast I was hoping to get a ride outside. However it may pour rain for about 3 days (starting now), so we'll see. I haven't ridden in very inclement weather before, so not sure if I'm comfortable with that quite yet. |

I've done it, but it's usually only when I get caught in a downpour, so it's not something I generally choose to do. |

Nothing for me, i'm getting back in the pool and on a bike either today or sunday depending on how schedules work out for work shoots, but no races for a while. Before I got hurt though i too aimed for at least one road race a month (running, not cycling) even on the off months just to keep in practice and for fun. |

Then off to Asheville with the family for some hiking, which means no trainer for me this weekend. I'll have to hit it pretty hard next week. I've been out since Tuesday. Seems I got a case of conjunctivitis which doesn't sound all that bad but it sapped more energy that what I thought so just laid low to get over it, TrainerRoad this morning was a little brutal but made it through. |

Extremely excited to go watch them, this'll be my first trip to a pro race! That's awesome, so jealous! I've gone the last 4 years. I didn't realize how much of an impact this made on my family until last year, my 4 year old was standing on the barrier (me holding him) ringing his cow bell, and yelling "go Hincapie" and "go JellyBelly". That made me smile. One of these days I'll find a jersey small enough for him. I'll miss it this year, especially since this will be the first time the women will be racing also, my wife would really dig that. Find out what charity is involved and you might get to ride the course before the pros do. |

That's awesome! I just spoke with my parents today (just south of findly/bowling green area) and they said it was crazy warm too! |
