Hello, I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas however you celebrate it! It is great to see new and returning triathletes to our group. I am working through the intro's.

Since I haven't posted mine here goes:

Name: Mary

Story: I jumped off the couch last year. I started biking and walking. The biking fitness took me to a point where I could actually start running. I have never enjoyed running before because it was always so painful. I kept with it and can comfortably run now, and I really enjoy it! I added in swimming, took some swim lessons and made enough progress to complete the swim portions of 3 races. I have slacked off on swimming and will be adding that back in January.

Family: I have a very supportive spouse. I am very fortunate in that.

Training: right now my training is run focused as I am training for an April marathon. I do my long runs with a group. I try to bike 2-3 times a week. In March I will start back in with a biking group for training.

2014: A races, April marathon and October half distance tri. The rest will be shorter run and tri events between those two races.

2013: I had a great year! Three triathlons where I had an amazing time. 5k to HM run events. I did an MS150 cycling ride as well as a century ride. Both were wonderful experiences I will do again.

Weight loss: the leap off the couch resulted in some much needed weight loss. I still have some to go but I suppose it is time to decide on a goal weight!

I am looking forward to getting into this year and sharing the journey with all of you.

Thanks Randy and Jason for leading us into another year!

Turns out I have to modify my schedule and training plan for 2014 in light of the fact that two more sprint triathlons have been found within the area I will be in at a particular time. Since I'm going to and from school at various times throughout the year, sans a vehicle (for now), it makes it really difficult to get to events throughout the North Georgia area.

So right now the event schedule stands as follows:

4/6 - 5k
4/26 - sprint
6/8 - sprint
7/21 - half marathon (verifying date through event coordinator)
9/6 - sprint
11/28 - half marathon

With the first half marathon, I will have completed the run plan for that the week prior (talk about timing!) Because of that, I can't decide if I should keep both half marathons or swap one out for a 10k. Cycling races are also being looked at, but that may be difficult to pull off without taking advantage of the cycling team at my school next year.

Regardless, my general training plan for the year is gonna need revamping.

Anyone wear Hoka's? If so, talk to me. I wear a very light New Balance with insoles. They're a shoe I can take out of the box and run a half marathon in with no fit issues. They don't have a ton of padding, but its not been an issue.....until this fall. My knees are starting to feel some wear & tear. Those who wear them say they're "Game changers." Would like some feedback.

I have a pair of Hoka's but use them for work. I teach Physical Education at an elementary school and stand most of the day. I mistakenly ordered my shoes a half a size too big so I haven't run in them. They're supposed to be wonderful shoes for those of us with knee problems. My orthopedic surgeon suggested that I not change my running shoes. I'm also a bit more injury prone and feel safer with my feet more grounded while running.

Jason has Hoka's along with every other running shoe on the planet. Sorry Jason, I couldn't resist!
Randy also has Hoka's.

Curious on this as well. With my degenerating left knee I have been wondering about alternatives and options to slow the process. I ran about 7 miles of the Las Vegas half marathon with someone wearing them and he couldn't have enough good things to say about them.

Unfortunately I missed my opportunity to try them on at the expo at Vegas but I've actually considered just trying a pair blind too see...

I had a pair of Hokas. Not sure if 1. they were too big and/or 2. I didn't give myself enough of a break in period but I sent them back. I WANTED to love them but for the price - I just didn't

Yes, I have two pairs of Hokas in my running shoe stable. My older pair is from 2011 and I have been doing most of my long (12+) mile runs in them since early 2011. I bought my second pair last year (although I am still doing a significant amount of running in my old pair that must have 4-500 miles on them-the outsoles are very worn but the cushioning is still great-and I never get rid of running shoes which is part of the reason I have so many pairs). I really like them, especially for long runs. They are much lighter than they look and are actually good for fast stuff too. My legs feel great the day after a long run and my feet feel good too.

I am a very light, neutral runner who has been very fortunate when it comes to running injuries so they are not a game-changer for me but I do really like them a lot.

I have two pairs as well. I am in love. Being heavy I always had sore feet and knees. Hokas have really taken the pain away. I only have a few hundred miles on them but it's all I will wear now. I can't wait to see how I feel after a marathon. I think everyone should at least try them out.
I seem to be running faster than before and I have been training less. In a HM training run in November I PR'd by 2 minutes according to my gps. But haven't done an actual race in them yet.
I met an older gentleman who is a scientist at UNH who did some independent research. He found that due to the increased height of the soles you gain extra distance from every stride so over a long distance run you can save your self several minutes.

Got in a nice 30 min morning run here at the in-laws before we spend the day running round having meals with other relatives lol

It's hard to keep up with the training at the in-laws... Only pool is outdoors and closed for the winter... Don't have a bike (yet lol) so I am stuck with just running for now... Not too bad though because there are some nice hills on this one mile loop I run and back home it's mostly flat so I get to get some hill work in with my endurance runs

Nothing like a snowmobile crash to put a damper on the Holiday!  Paul and I went out for our first ride of the season yesterday in pristine conditions.  We were snaking through the Northwoods and hit what we thought was land and turned out to be nothing but snow covering a deep ravine.  I flew five feet down it into a pile of thick brush and he held on to the sled and smacked into a tree.  The force of the crash was sent entirely up his left arm.  He knew immediately he broke it.  I got up as fast as I could (not easy when you're flat on your back and are wearing enough gear to look like a Michelin man) and scrambled up the hill to get help.  When I saw his arm, I knew he was in trouble.  No compound fracture, but bones were sticking out both sides of his arm in a very weird way.  The day ended in an ambulance ride to ER, traction for several hours and eventually having a surgeon relocate the radius and something else at his wrist.  They put this temporary cast on it and he'll need surgery to repair it back in Madison.

The snowmobile was dragged out of the ravine late last night and appears to have pretty extensive damage.  I couldn't care less about that part, but of course Paul does!

PS.  My right shoulder hurts like the devil having taken the brunt of the fall on that body part.  I guess it means any swim progress will need to hold off for a few days.  Oh well.

Suzy-hope Paul has a speedy recovery and that your injury is nothing serious. Very scary how quickly things like that can happen. Take care of yourself and keep us updated.

I'm back to work today. My short run did not go well yesterday. Left knee pain cut it very short. I'm going in next Friday to see the ortho. Fortunately, he is on my tri team and always takes good care of us. No pain other than when running. Seems like I end up with some sort of injury this time every year that knocks me out of running for awhile. Swim at lunch and then an easy bike tonight to see how it feels when riding.

OH NO!

Glad Paul is "put back together" and that you're just sore (hopefully nothing broken on you too!).

REST UP!

Suzy- so sorry to hear that... Doesn't sound like much fun... I'll be praying that it doesn't mess up the rest of your holiday time with family etc.

Do any of you know of a good way to stretch the ankles and keep them loose. I know it's important to have flexible ankles for proper pedaling form, but my left one just refuses to get and stay loose. The same for running, especially since I've switched to a more forward strike on my foot in my running form. I have one stretch that I do for that, but it doesn't help too much. Any ideas???

First, let me apologize for making the word "Hoka" a possessive with the apostrophe rather than just pluralizing it with an 's.' It's driving me BONKERS seeing my mistake (it's the English teacher in me).

Second, I bit the bullet and ordered a pair of Hoka Kailua Tarmac shoes this morning. I couldn't find the Bondi B in my size, and while the Kailua Tarmac is a bit lower profile, perhaps it'll be a good starter pair. Found them at Running Warehouse on sale, plus we get a Tri Club discount, so overall, got them for under $100.

I'm not sure where this knee pain I'm having is coming from. I suspect it's a combination of the 8 mile run I had 2 weeks ago, which was probably too big of a mileage increase at the time) combined with the strength training I added back in lately. I used to be a professional ski instructor (in Utah), and after my 2nd season had some knee pain. Those MRIs from 20 years ago showed some small miniscal tears. My ortho at the time told me it wasn't worth cleaning up at the time, to lose weight, to stay active, and that when I needed surgery, I would know it. Surprisingly, I've had zero knee pain in the last two years since pursuing endurance sports.

I can't quite figure out if the pain is joint pain or if it's musculature pain at muscle insertion sites. I'm hoping a few days of ibuprofen and some foam rolling on those 'hot spots' will help. I definitely have 2 spots that trigger a response when I foam roll (base of my Vastus Lateralis, I think and the lower portion of the IT band).

I'm going on an easy, easy 16 mile bike ride this afternoon with some friends. The average pace will be well below 16 mph, and we're riding the local Greeneway, which is almost completely flat, so it'll be an good spin, which I find loosens up my knee. A friend, who is training for Charleston half, is doing a brick run after. I have a feeling she'll try to pull me into joining her. I'm too easy of a target. I'll need to be sure to leave my trainers at home.

Nathan--Is your flexibility issue more of a flexion or an extension issue? I'm going to assume that your problems are more flexion issues since you don't mention it affecting your swim kick (which would cause you to not have the ankle flexibility to point your toes). As a former equestrian, flexibility through the ankles was key because if you couldn't keep your 'heels down' (weight dropped through your heel so that the heel of your foot is below the ball of your foot in the stirrup), you wouldn't stay on the horse very long when you jumped big fences.

The best thing that helped was standing on a step with the balls of your feet and allowing your heels to drop below the step. I find, also, that doing a lot of downward facing dog (yoga pose), and then alternating dropping one heel to the mat followed by the opposite to be beneficial as well. Definitely stretches out the calves and achilles.

This looks like a promising video: http://youtu.be/6_wn1CCWAvI

Suzy sorry to hear about you and Paul. I wish you both a speedy recovery.

I did my 2 mile walk with the cane and then my 10 minute power walk on the crutches again today. I really tried to push the power walk and it feels pretty good. I have a follow-up in a few weeks and hoping I can start some real something, anything.

Heading out in a few minutes, my daughter is taking my wife and I to the movies and then Monday she is taking us to Pacific Grove to see the butterflies. Nice to have her home for a few days.

Stuart- It's great to see the progress that you've made since surgery. Pretty soon that power walk is going to be a run. I can see why your PT wants you to continue to use the crutches now that you explained it. BTW- I'm going to send you a msg.. with some swim questions.

Wow- It looks like several people are having problems with their knees. Please err on the cautious side and take care of the problem instead of trying to push through it.  Last year I stupidly tried to blame my problem on ITBS for months before getting an MRI. In hindsight I wish I'd gone immediately to the Dr. and had surgery or at least a diagnosis.

It also looks like we have a lot of group members who are training for Half Marathons on Marathons this year. Especially people that are new to the group and triathlon training.

Question for those that this apply to- What motivated you to sign up for or do a HM or Marathon this year? Is it something that you wanted to do? Or is it something that you felt like you needed to do from a training standpoint?

A marathon wasn't something I felt I "needed" to do for training.
I just want to have a goal to keep me going through the winter and get used to running that kind of distance. With a HIM in June and the idea of an IM in 2015 I know I can get through the swim and I have ridden over a dozen centuries over the past few years. So getting through the first 2 events shouldn't be a problem. Its the fear of the marathon after the bike that gets me.

So why not do 2 or maybe 3 marathons in 2014 to take away some of that fear and see that I can do to make seem less scary.

Good question. Personally, I have several different reasons for attempting the marathon distance. I tend to be pretty competitive even if it's just with myself. I like to push myself to new limits and see what I'm capable of. A marathon seemed like the next logical step. Being as close to Boston as I am I really want to qualify for and run the Boston Marathon some day. Of course I say that now, I'm quickly realizing that 26 miles is a long freaking way. I may be one and done after Florida. Lastly, I have a pretty big discrepancy between my open run times and my triathlon run times. I'm hoping the large increase in run volume will help build my aerobic capacity so I'm able to run faster off the bike.

My motivation is pretty simple. We have a local half marathon in late February. If I don't sign up for it, I will become a total slacker over the winter and won't run a single mile. Since I invested the $40 to sign up, I will keep running and won't lose the 2 years of running fitness I've developed.

Thanks for offering!  How likely is it to re-break something that you broke in the Spring?  I fell on the same side as I did in my bike crash and that mid scapula area feels dangerously like it did when I broke the four ribs.  I am hoping it is nothing but muscle soreness, but biking with it today makes me wonder.  I guess the good news is there is absolutely nothing one can do about broken ribs.

PS.  I hesitate to even bring this up after watching how much pain Paul was in last night.  I don't see a lot of x rays, but the one of his arm was pretty astonishing.
