My run this morning totally blew chunks! It was one of those deals when I was tired and didn't want to get out of bed. Then once I had gotten my butt out the door, all I wanted to do was to stop. Finished it. Now I just have to get ready for work

which means the physical may have been awful, but the mental strength you gained was awesome

Doug - what are you going to watch. Ever watched the new Battlestar Galactica series. It's awesome! I love the idea of only watching it on the trainer - great idea!

I'm going to start by watching Making A Murderer, but will have to find something with more episodes eventually - probably The Wire or Mad Men.  I haven't watched any of the new series, only the campy series from the '80s.

Love the "new" Battlestar Gallactica! I want to be Starbuck. (Female in this series - don't worry, it works pretty well). I binge Netflixed Arrow - totally addicted and now caught up to current season - stinks waiting each week to watch it and now having commercials. Hahaha.

1200 yd swim this morning (and if I include the popcorn scraping as Thor said I could...) that puts me 5/24 for the month so far.

The week is going okay - bike is 2/3, swim is 1/3, no runs and I've been a bad PT patient. I may have bit off more than I can chew with this house project going on - I will be happy to get 2 swims in this week. Running would be cold but doable - but the streets are all ice right now so a warm CLP may be on deck in lieu of slipping and pulling a muscle. We'll see what the rest of the week looks like.

NAME: Chase Linscomb

STORY: I was an active triathlete while in college (Texas A&M graduated in 2011), mostly at sprint and Olympic distances. I was training for longer distances, and was up to about 40-45 miles per week running and around 150 per week on my bike.

When I graduated my first job out of college kept me working 60-80 hours per week, and I own a video production company that kept me busy another 15-20 hours per week. I put on quite a bit of weight, and failed at making time to train. I've recently taken a new job that allows me to only work 40 hours per week, and I'm scaling back on the number of video projects that I take to allow myself to get back in shape.

Right now I am 6ft, 298 lbs, I can run 2 miles at about 15 minute pace, and I can swim about half a mile without stopping (no idea the pace I don't usually track it very well).

FAMILY STATUS: I am single but have a girlfriend that I have been with for sometime. When we first met we were both very active and healthy, and we are trying to get back to that lifestyle together.

CURRENT TRAINING: I just started again this last Monday, and I am doing mostly swimming and some weight training until I shed some weight so I am not pounding away on my joints. I will be adding the bike back in soon, I just need to be fit again because my geometry has changed significantly so i can't get comfortable on it as it is.

2015 RACES: I am doing a 'Race the Year' project with a team where we have to complete 2016 miles in 2016. There are 4 of us, so it is not a significant commitment, but it will keep me moving.

My boss has asked me to do a HIM with him in June, I am going to do everything I can to get ready but I'm not sure if I can do it. I would love input here.

Doing a Tough Mudder sometime this summer.

The Plan for 2016: I want to push as hard as I can to make that HIM with my boss, but I'm going to listen to my body, and people who know more than I do and make sure I am doing it in a healthy manner. I am working on getting my diet under control, and getting some weight off.

My main goal for this year is to focus less on work, and more on living. I want to get healthy, spend more time with my girlfriend, and see my family more. I really want to do what I can to get moving back towards an IM, and I look forward to feeling the way I did when I was actively racing.

BEER/WINE/BOOZE PREFERENCE: I like beer, but I love red wine and bourbon!

Favorite Beer: Hacker Pschorr
Red Wine: Petite Sirah or Chianti
Bourbon: Too many to list! (Blanton's, Bookers, and Willet have been my favorites recently)

WEIGHT LOSS: I would love to get down to 220 (or below) by the end of the year.

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD BDAS MEMBER: I love to drink, like to train, and at times I can be funny. Based on what I've seen in this group so far my priorities seem to be in order....

Welcome Chase! (that was one of my top name choices if my daughter had been a boy!)

I just got in a crappy run- thanks to you guys! I knew I was falling behind. 20 minute minimum hit doing 4 jog 1 walk X3 + 5 jog.

Yuck! But it's done. I needed the motivation.

4/24.

I might even hit a double if the snow starts. That bike in the basement has not been used in a while.

Welcome, Chase.

Are you still in B/CS or have you relocated elsewhere?  If so, maybe will run into each other at a race - looks like we've both done TriWaco in the past.

Welcome, Chase!

#8--35 min tempo run yesterday afternoon. My first ever tempo run--it was tough, but in a good way.

#9--3.2mi run this afternoon. Still thinking about a yoga session tonight. Yesterday's got derailed watching the neighbors put up the world's ugliest fence. The horror!!!

What do I wish I'd known in the beginning?
1.) chamois cream

2.) I wish I'd known that you need to eat during long workouts sometimes! It took me a couple of really good bonks to figure that one out!

Welcome Chase and all the new members! Glad to see even some from this part of the world and may out there who enjoy red wine as well.
Apart from the sport that brings us here, I have learned a lot about beer (in fact, while typing I am drinking a glass of my first home-made pilsner, very happy with the results....).

What I wish I had know at my early days:
a. train running after long bike session (this awful feeling of 'jelly legs')
b. as Gretchen mentioned before, eat and drink while training/racing - never done it before as it has made a huge difference in my performance (and that drinking beer after training replaces my lost electrolytes...)

48 min indoor spinning, 2/24, I am still far away but hope to double during the weekend.

Still in BCS Doug, I love it too much to move! Not only the town, but I'm central to Houston and Austin which is nice.

Triwaco was fun, wasn't a fan of the square swim, but the bike and run courses were great.

Hope to see you at a race! I'll post on here as I decide exactly what I'm doing this year.

6/24 - 1.9 miles, 20 min, 10:30 pace 4 run:1 x3 and finish 5 min run.

stressful day at work and while the workout helped just couldn't get my head into it.....made it through and did what I set out to do.

Things that I have learned while researching that I didn't know before:

1) fueling during exercise.
2) the science behind it all. I always watched people that ran and did stuff like this and just thought they strapped on shoes and just went out and did what they did (some people with natural talent etc can do that), but when looking at it the diets, hydration, planning, and strategy behind it speaks to me as an engineer that likes that kind of thing.

Workout - I'm good for 3 runs so far this week for 16 miles. It's time to ramp it back up. I was going to wake up early to do my runs and then I remembered, "Oh yeah, I HATE working out in the morning." Finished my three runs this week at 8:00pm, 7:30pm and 7:30pm. Ahhh....awesome! They were treadmill runs too. This weekend will be my long chilly run. Wondering what to wear for your cold outside run? http://www.runnersworld.com/what-to-wear

Weight Loss - I was 228 Monday morning first thing. I've been watching my weight fluctuate wildly since I moved our scale into my bathroom. This is more for my entertainment than anything else. I've seen it as low as 221 this week. I went running today at 225 and came back as 223. There's NO WAY I sweated out 2 pounds, so the one thing I want to repeat to everyone: When trying to identify any weight you lost , weigh yourself the same time on the same day of the week in the same condition. I'll evaluate my weight loss next Monday morning again and in reality that should be my baseline. The 228 number was really with a full belly from the weekend. My weight loss challenge started Monday. ;-)

Dennis - Sorry to hear about the burst pipe, but without a shopvac I bet you got a good forearm workout from ringing out the towels. That counts! On a different note, it's nice to hear someone else with the same beer taste as myself. I've heard that we have hit peak hoppiness and that the craft breweries are going to move away a little more to other styles. Here's to hoping (not hopping)!

Thor - Sorry to hear about the PF. I remember my knife-in-the-heel like pain 2 years ago and it's just not any fun. My Doc helped me out, hopefully yours will too. I'm forbidden from walking around without my inserts. Funny thing is, I only feel right with them now. Good Luck.

Chase - Welcome! I've decided that this year I want to be a little bit more of a running cheerleader in this group. So you want to go from where you are to a HIM in 6 months? I applaud your desire and it CAN be done. If you want some motivation I suggest you read this: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp...

Hit my weight loss goal for the week this morning, so now I just need one more run and one more ride (and keep the weight off). Going to aim for both tomorrow to close it out. 4/24 on the month.

Well it's official....I'm lazy. Trying hard to find my lost mojo ever since IMFL. I have got 4 workouts in this week but it was a mental challenge. Was supposed to run yesterday and ride on the trainer today but I made every excuse not to. I did get to the gym late last night so I guess it wasn't a total failure. I haven't been in the water since the race on 11/7. I think I'm going to pull the trigger and sign up for some races early next week. My coach thinks that's a good idea as well. You would think $125 a month for a coach would be enough motivation but sadly it's not.

Time to get to work!

Welcome to all the new faces and kudos to those nailing their workouts! Hitting the start of '16 hard!

9/24 with a trainer session this morning and swim over lunch.  I've met my weekly goal of 10k yard swimming and I need one more run and one more bike to make those goals as well.  As for the weight loss, lets just say that I've been better with the exercise component than with the diet component.

#10--30 minute trainer ride this morning with lots of high cadence intervals. Somehow, I don't mind the trainer when there is something interesting going on like intervals. It is the long sets that drive me crazy!

#11--2100yds swim at lunch. I was in the last lane, which sucks. Not only is it not deep enough (for me) to do flip turns, but it has 12 water jets blasting you around. I think I probably swam an extra 200 yds just from being buffeted about. Good OWS simulation? Trying to look at the bright side here, cause that swim sucked!

Found out last night that ongoing political tensions in the Middle East has caused the Egyptian government to suspend all foreign archaeological missions in Middle Egypt, which is where I work. So, that little nugget of joy means that I'm likely not going to be spending March-June in Egypt. UPSIDE: early season triathlons are now on the table!

STORY: Despite the challenges of the past year, I remain convinced this group was created for me. I started running several years ago, and quite enjoyed it. I really, really quite enjoyed that it allowed me to drink beer and lose weight. Then, I got roped into a work event where we biked from work to a brewery. It's a straight shot on a trail. So, I bought a bike, just so I could literally....bike from work to brewery. Note...there are now four breweries on that trail. Somewhere on my second bike ride, I decided that if I was going to bike, run, and swim, I might ask well start entering and training for triathlons. But I'll be honest, I really only do it so I can drink beer.

Last year was my second year of tris. The previous year I did four sprints, last year I unfortunately was only able to do two of my planned six. Unfortunately last year I developed a fairly serious eye condition and have lost the vision in one eye, and have come very close to losing the eye altogether. The last part of the year has been spent recovering from a number of eye surgeries. So I am joining the group with high hopes but a fairly different and modified training schedule and goals from previous years. Bear with me....I will likely need to modify challenges and goals for a few months.

FAMILY STATUS: Married to the best man in the world. No children, just a dogsled team. And four three week old puppies.

CURRENT TRAINING: I've just been given the green light to walk very slowly for half an hour. :-) I'll do as much as I can as soon as I can, but the priority is attempting to keep my eye, so it has to go slow.

2015 RACES: two sprints (Chelanman and Lake Tye)

The Plan for 2016: Can't plan that far ahead yet. In mid-February, I'll feel like I can start looking at specific races.

BEER/WINE/BOOZE PREFERENCE: Love a good red wine, and a pale/ipa beer.

WEIGHT LOSS: MY FIRST GOAL! The steroids I've been on for the surgeries have caused me to pack on the pounds. If nothing else, I am losing 15 pounds this year because I HATE IT!

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD BDAS MEMBER: I really love beer. And I really appreciate that exercise and training allows me to drink it. :-) And I'm a pretty nice person. But mostly, even if my race planning is curtailed a bit this year, I really am going to need the support and structure around redeveloping my fitness (most has been lost the past few months as I've been completely grounded), and want to help others in that arena as well.

CHEERS!
