I have a little dilemma. I signed to do the St. Anthony's tri in April with TNT but got sick and spent some time in the hospital so I transferred to the Chicago tri. Because I was off training for a good 2 months or so I don't think I could do the olympic distance so I signed up for the sprint. I am now racked with guilt that I shorting my self and the people who donated $$$. This is my first tri and I my swimming is horrendous so I try to say to myself that this will be a better start for me. Am I a con artist?

Ted - I would say no. You did not intentionally go out to deceive people and the pull the "bait and switch". You ran into physical limitations (sickness) which caused you to switch events and which prevented you from effectively training for the swim.

No because you are still donating the money to charity. If you took the money and run (yes, a Steve Miller Band reference, thank you) then you would certainly be a con man.

Personally I still think you can get out there and do it Ted. Just keep at your training and get out there and try (or tri, whatever you would prefer)

I would hope folks are making these donations for the cause and not on a per mile basis and this is obviously an act of god type o' deal.  Besides, with the limited knowledge of tris most folks have, they probably all think you are doing a IM distance anyway just cuz its a triathlon.

Generally the assatars are penalties for losing on the challenge board and the penalty lasts a month.  New month, no more assatar.

Sorry to butt in here after being AWOL so long.....

I guess I need a little encouragement to get back on the horse and into training again. Things were going great, then life started to kick my butt a little bit. We moved to a new house, which ordinarily wouldn't have been so bad, but it was one of those moves where everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong. Now we are in the middle of what will probably be an ugly custody battle over my step son. His mother has done nothing but use him, mess with his head, and harass us for over a year. I'll spare you all the details of it, but it's one of those situations where things will get worse before they get better. All of that on top of taking care of all the kids (our three, plus I babysit a 9 year old, a 4 year old, and a 8 week old baby) just sapped all my energy for a while. Then once I fell out of a training routine, I found it very difficult to get back into it. I don't mean any of that as a good excuse, it's just what happened. I feel pretty pathetic whining about my "stressful life" when we have members who are fighting cancer at the moment, know what I mean?

So here is where I find myself- My tri is July 22 and I am out of shape. It is only a sprint, so I know I can do it, but it won't be pretty. I already know I won't be near where I want to be, but I just don't want to quit. This is something I dreamed about accomplishing, and I don't want to give up on it. Any advice? (other than get up off my and get to the gym? LOL)

PS- I hope to catch up with you all in my "spare" time. Hope life and training have been going well for all of you!

I personally don't think you are whining. Life attacks, for good and for bad. I think you can do it. Just by wanting to do it, shows me that you'll do better than you thought! Though I can't say I am as busy as you, I still find it hard to get motivated with all the things going on. But I want to do this and it seems like you do too. So good luck and I hope everything works out for you! Just think of the sprint as a few hours away from your problems!!!!

I think that's why we're all here - for motivation and a little bit of accountability. Everyone has their only little hunk of life; but it does sound like your piece is bigger than most right now. You can do the sprint, but, to use your words, "get up off my and get to the gym".

I think some of it is how you look at training and tri in general.  I dont think of it as working out.  I think of it as 1) my own time to be alone with my thoughts 2) time to improve myself  3) time to burn stress and gain energy through making myself more fit.

In a way for me this journey has been a coping mechanism for the rigors of life, helping raise four kids, work, part time business etc.  Its not a chore for me to make time anymore cuz I look at the benefits of other leisure activities like TV or Playstation 2, etc, etc vs tri and there is no comparison for me personally in enhancing quality of life.  I feel better, have met tons of great people, etc, etc.  So when everything going on else around me is nuts, this is how I escape, how I cope, how I regain my focus.  Just a few thoughts.  I wish you the best.  As far as the tri, go into it with reasonable expecations on where your training is and use it as a learning experience as well.  Most importantly have fun with it, cuz thats what it should be about.

This is so true, life happens and it gets in the way sometimes. The thing to remember is, as Joe said, this is your recuperation time, from which you'll get the energy you need to deal with all the other things that are going on in your life.

I have a bit less going on in my life than you (!), but I find that if I don't plan it, it doesn't get done. So first thing every week, I plan out when I'm going to fit in 2 workouts for each sport. For some (like Joe) this means getting up at the asscrack of dawn, for me it's making sure I get in a workout every lunch hour, without fail, and mixing in some early morning or late evening workouts. Obviously lunchtime won't work for you for most days, but what are the times that do? It doesn't have to be a superlong workout at this point, you just need to make sure your aerobic capacity can handle the sprint.

My suggestion would be to do one short and one long workout for each discipline over the next 2 weeks, with your long being the distance of the race. Do it at whatever pace you can manage. That way you'll know that you have it in you to do what you've gotta.

Good luck, we're rooting for you!

Talk about backsliding... I have been in a horrible funk this month.

Work has been impossible and every since my wife and I had a "talk" about my training I feel my season has gone down the tubes. I should be in good form for this one but I have taken 2 steps back.

I am really excited about my next tri on July 22 but I feel like a freaking 3 toed sloth. I haven't been on my bike for what feels like forever and anything that can go wrong with training this week has. I know I can get back to it... but I'm pissed. I really wanted to smoke this course but now I know that it is unlikely.

Sorry... had to rant but here's the question. Do I train as normal right on up to the tri or do I taper? Thoughts?

Since it's a Sprint distance, I would do a taper but not for a full week. Full workout Monday and Tuesday and light workouts the remainder.

Hi guys. Sorry for being AWOL. What can I say? I'm enjoying summer, big time. I just signed up for the Oshkosh Triathlon (sprint: .25/16/3.1). I'm gonna hunt for a run between now and then too. Hope all is well elsewhere.

Training, family, job.

My swims are getting longer and I'm feeling more comfortable in the pool. I need to get out to a lake and practice open water.

My 7 yr old son brought me a race brochure the other day and said he wanted to do it. He's done a 1K and a 50 yd dash so far. After the last one (the 50 yd dash), he said, "that's it? my legs aren't even tired". He wants to do a longer one so we started some running together around the neighborhood. I'm pretty happy he wants to run with me and run in races.

I did one of my first OWS this weekend. It helped a lot. I have always been comfortable in the water but this just helped more.

It was also nice not to be punched, grabbed or kicked while in the water. I found that I get to amped up at the start of the swim. I am sure my HR is through the roof and I start too hard. Just getting in the water by myself I was able to relax and just swim. An invaluable experience.

Yep.  Door County Olympic for me.  Again goals are kind of subjective.  I will be trying to start the swim in the middle of the pack to simulate the human blender I will see at MOO.  Hammer it all out as this will be my first oly, nail nutrition, have fun.  No idea what to expect time wise, but lets shoot for 2:25

OWS practice has been huge for me come race day and recommend as many as you can get in.

Ok, I know that everyone says not to OWS alone. I know it, I know why...

But I did today, and I'm really glad. We live on a lake and I've been kicking myself for how little OWS practice I've gotten in this year. So today I swam across the lake and back on my lunch hour, twice.

You can all berate me now. Joe, I know you do a lot of OWS in the early a.m. - do you always have a buddy?

I changed my first tube today. Got up this morning for my morning ride and found my rear tire flat. Tried to pump it up, but it wouldn't hold air. I changed it tonight. It wasn't so bad. Then spent some time cleaning the bike. The kids pulled their's out and cleaned theirs too. Quality family time and bike maintenance all in one shot. Afterwards, we all went down to the park, so the kiddos could ride their bikes. A clean bike makes one go faster.

So Ken... Any tri's in August to get some more experience in before your Olympic in October?

I don't think I am going to do any tris in August... just straight training for my Olympic in September.

Anyone get any new toy's recently? I'm thinking about picking up a trainer here in the next few weeks.
