Thanks all!

I am exhausted, mostly from lack of sleep (loading of the hay into the barn didn't help either).  I have to start thinking about a future tri that I won't be able to wear a wetsuit.  Probably will have to be out a ways.

Way to go Gary!! You are now a triathlete !!!! Great race report and wonderful pictures !!!

OK folks, happy news from the GWN (Great White North). The Varsity Reds won the national championship last night. A dramatic 3-2 win. The other team had so many chances to tie it up in the final two minutes that I thought I was going to pass out from lack of oxygen (I ws holding my breath!)

Also great to see that Dan's MSU Spartans are into the final four!!

Hey all!

As a Project manager I like to do Post mortems of our projects and also for my races.  Thought I would do one for this and share it for additional input.  Not being hard on myself, it’s just my nature.  Once again I enjoyed yesterday and am proud of my accomplishment.  Any input would be appreciated.

Pre-race:

I use caffeine to get my system moving in the morning (if you know what I mean).  Next race I am going to cut to ½ can of diet Pepsi.  I have a bottle of Endurolite capsules, I have used them before and will use these next race.  More banana’s, yogurts, etc.

Quote from Race Director: We had a record number of registrations for the 2009 T-Gator Triathlon #1 with a large percentage of them being first time Triathletes. The cool temps made the race quite a challenge with mid 40s air temp and the water sitting at 66 degrees. Although the water was about 20 degrees warmer then the air it was still one of the coldest one's that I've done.

For a long while I was walking around with a jacket but just my Tri shorts.  I should have kept covered but I was hopped up for the race and didn’t notice it.  Next time I will keep covered the entire pre-race if it is that cold.

Swim: I need to improve my swimming.  My times came out to a little under 2:30/100 meters.  If I could cut out the breaks I probably could get that to 2:00-2:15/100 meters.  Going to concentrate on distance not speed the next 3 weeks.

T-1: I made some mistakes here.  I underestimated the distance to the bike rack and walked too much.  Also, when I cramped I was thinking a gel would be great but I had put my backpack in the truck with the gels.  For now on 1-2 gels will be laid out.

Biking: Overall this went well.  On the way back I was avg 18-19 mph with the reduced cramps.  I plan on doing several long rides between now and then.  My goal is avg 18 at the next one (18.6 mile ride) and avg 17.3 this race.  I need to practice taking a gel while riding.  I think I will also use my camelbak next race.  Reaching down for a bottle slows me up and I have used the camelback several times.  I am borrowing a pair of aerobars and may buy them.  Will see how I do with them.  I sent a pic of me riding from the race (didn’t post it on the RR as I didn’t have it at the time) to a buddy of mine who rides a lot.  He suggested either aero bars or moving my seat back as it looked like my balance was too much on my hands.

T-2: 56 seconds put me towards the top of the group but I want quick ties for my running shoes as I will have clips next race.

Run: I hadn’t done a significant amount of running but will need to build this up over the next few weeks.

Training: concentrate on swimming distances not speed, increase running/riding distances (without overdoing it).  Several bricks.

Back from PT... disappointing news!  He wants me to not run and not road bike and not do the race on the 18th... I basically told him that I WAS going to do the race... but I know he's the BEST, and I should probably listen to him... SOOOO, on advice from my coach, I have a call into him to find out the consequences if I do the race... or I might have to pull out... I just want to cry But, I want to run painfree too!!! THIS SUCKS!!!

Awww Diane! That's awful news. You've worked so hard. Cry

Second opinion maybe? Did the PT say anything about doing the sprint?

I'm so sorry. I didn't realize you were that hurt. Poor Diane. So, so sorry to hear this.

I didn't realize I was that hurt either.... I knew I wanted to fix this issue, but to stop running & biking for a while is NOT what I had planned! I'm going to ask him about doing the Sprint, or I'll have to pull out all together...

I guess this messes up Half Marathon Training for Seattle in June too...which I was concerned about anyway since my mileage has been so sucky lately! And I'll have to pull out of the Sprint Tri that I had just signed up for on May 9... but I think I can transfer that to another Tri later in the season...

The good news is he has a plan... I WILL get fixed!!!

Shark - sorry to read about the extent of your injury but you'd do well to follow the medical advice that you're getting 'cause the inclination to train and race in spite of the problems is almost always a terrible decision that leads to longer and more serious injuries. Best wishes and positive vibes coming from the north!

Shark - what FBP said....follow the doc's advice....that said, if it was a PT, I might see a doctor just to be sure...someone experienced with running injuries preferred....

Gary - great job.....what I see you learned - there are actually 5 disciplines in triathlon....swim bike run transition and nutrition.....transitions are free time and nutrition will usually keep those pesky cramps away.....how much water did you drink during the tri...when it is cold, sometimes we don't drink enough.  Great Job!!

FBP - congrats on the hockey championship!

Dan - congrats but unfortunately, MSU trashed my bracket.

LRR I drank an entire gatorade on the way there.  During the ride I drank another (20oz) gatorade.  I started taking the electro lyte capsules.  Fine on my stomach and no problems on my ride today.  Ordered some Yankz laces today and pinging the ebay seller on where my bike shoes are.  Hopefully by next week I will have the pedals going and will have the last of the adjustments to my aero bars done!

Question: is there a standard distance for the distance between the aerobars?  Mine were too close (thumbs were rubbing) so I spread them some.  Also, Diane I believe you got the aero bottle, do you like it?  Thinking of getting that.

Well, I decided to drop the Rage in the Sage Triathlon with TnT... I still have SO much work to do in PT, there's no way I'm going to be ready for the race in time... I'm only missing by a few weeks, it SUCKS, but that's LIFE... Yes, I'm disappointed, but there will be other races, and other Fund Raising opportunities... I'm going to see if I can Volunteer for the race!

Shark - volunteering is a GREAT idea.....I ask everyone to volunteer at one race at least each year....two is better....remember, there's no players without volunteers....get well, there are LOTZ of races waiting for you.

Gary - Gatorade doesn't work for me...too much sugar....you might try some other type of drink...I use Infinit nutrition (online) for all of it....it combines electrolytes, calories and everything in one drink...that and a few gels for variety is my ticket.  You gotta find your own.....but I would experiment with some Hammer products or Accelerade to see how it works.....for me the more sugar it has, the less I can tolerate....certainly for very long races.  Aerobars are a personal deal...the width has to do with your "aeroness".  Remember there is a balance between aero and power, keep tweaking and trying to find the balance of comfort and power.  Part of yours could have even been some....dare I say....anxiety....smile....it is always that way early on.....keep at it....

It is wonderful to see all of your success.....I am very proud of all of you.  Keep up the great work and keep all bodily fluids out of your wetsuit....smile.

Dianne, so sorry to hear about your race! As Bryan said there are lots of races when you are ready. Still, I know how hard you were training, and it certainly does not seem fair.!!!

Dont be swayed by our great leader...your wetsuit...is yours, to do with what you want!!!!!

Pee away my friends....and find yourself standing alone in your own little bubble of aroma on a warm summer afternoon or morning waiting for your wave start.....it is certainly one way to get some breathing room.....if you can call that smell wafting into your nostrils, breathing.....Personally I have always tried NOT to wallow in my own urine.....mav, I thought you were more sanitary.....ugh!

Hey all!
Quiet thread!  12 days until my next Tri.  Getting a little frustrated as I haven't been able to get as long of a ride in but will rectify that soon.  Aerobars are coming along and hoping tomorrow will be the new pedals.  Ordered the aero bottle for the aerobars.  Should make drinking easier and won't have to wear the camelbak on the Tri, saves me a few seconds in transitions.

Thinking about my next Tri, there is one early May but most likely not wetsuit legal according to the RD.  1000yds (not meters) but I think I will skip it.  I could try to swim it and hold onto the kayaks but I want a month or so of quality training before my next tri.  There is one in July (525 meter swim) which would give me a lot of time to practice my swimming.

I swam 600meters in 14:10, I have to be the slowest swimmer in the world! LOL, oh well someone has to come in last!

Later!

Thanks all, but the more I think about it the more I believe I must have lost count.  I think I worked that out to a 2:18 /100 m.  Was not swimming that fast of a pace.  Not that I worried about being faster but in my next race I want out of that water as fast as I can!  May seem the same but to me there is a big difference!  LOL, I have already been called 'mental' once today (by a RD, quite unintentionally).

Mav, I am sure you don't stink.  Hopefully we can have an FE someday and I will prove it to LRR.  LOL, um, well you know what I mean!  I need a beer, see you folks later.

Hey y'all,

Not too much news from me except to say that I THINK that I have found the solution to my pool allergy - a $4 nose plug. I was chatting with a colleague one day last week mentioned my problem with post-swim congestion and he said that a nose plug solved the problem for him. I tried it on Tuesday. They are ugly and slightly painful (mind you, some think that of me! ) but they work.

Happy Easter to all for whom that applies. I will be playing at mass tonight for Holy Thursday and again on Saturday for the Easter Vigil. Both Friday and Monday are holidays here - yippee.

Happy Passover if that applies also.

I will retain my fresh smelling wetsuit thank you.....it is obvious you all don't live in hot climates....neoprene with uric acid in heat do not mix well.....they set off some sort of chemical reaction that is guaranteed to set off any group of people to laugh their a$$ off at you......whooooo that stinks!

Gary - don't worry about the swim time....I know you will but I had to say that....practice but when you realize the critical nature of the swim is to get out with a reasonable heart rate, not exhausted, and with the legs and lungs to ride and run.

Scuba - you are SO welcome to lurk....what's up?

Hey all,
Freddy - glad you found your solution.

LRR - Will do, once I get in the water it will all be about just finishing.

I might have found a solution for my leg cramps.  Prior to my swim lesson I took one of the Hammer Endurolyte capsules with some gatorade.  The swim lesson was all about making my kick consistent and keeping my foot pointed (when I took a breath my legs were every which way and sometimes pointed up.  Can you say water brake?).  It was a lot of leg work including using the zoomers.  No cramps.  This isn't the first time so I think I will be using them more.  I have used them about 10 times with no problems.

One week until my next Tri, the aero bars and the clipless pedals are really helping.  Clipping in/out is getting easier and I can stay on the aero bars longer and longer.  When I get into them, pedaling gets easier and speed increases.  Very nice.

Last bit, found a century ride in May.  Will probably do the 50 or 62 mile version.  Now all I need is a June race and I am set.  Problem is the heat here will make any local race miserable (except may be the swimming).

Later all!
