Well, after getting up at 4:30 in the AM and getting on the road at 5:30 for a race in Manhattan, i get to Mickey D's for a cup-o-joe and realize i did not pack my bike shoes. Back home i go get 2 pairs and get back on the road, easy ride down, find the race site no prob's, get outa the car and get bike off the roof and decide to ride up to get my #. Put shoes on, pump tires, go to get my helmet....helmet...OH NO I FORGOT MY FREAKING HELMET!!!!AAARRRGGGHHHHH

so i desperately ask around for a spare and No Luck Chuck.

I was not able to race, so i watched some friends and went home, you have no idea how aggravated i was. I really wanted to do this race.

That really stinks. I think from now on I'll throw my mtb helmet and spare shoes in the car too, sure would be nice to be able to loan them out if someone was in that situation.

sorry buddy! want me to see if there is room in the Sharks HM for you saturday morning?

Good morning everyone.

Daylight savings time is still kicking my butt.  Did an easy (cold) recovery run this morning and will get on the trainer tonight.

Shaun is running an 8K on Sunday.  I'm thinking about running as well just to break up the long run a little bit.

Some circuits in the weight room this morning and 45ish minutes on the trainer.  Really want to get out and hammer a 30 mile ride to see where my fitness level is at and set my pace for my upcoming Oly.  Not sure what the "honey do" list looks like though.

Oh and I picked up a $100 tri top off the classifieds here for $25.  Gotta love it when folks get sponsored and have to off load stuff.

And Rudedog I got 20 miles down the road out to a long group ride the other day and remembered my shoes were in the other car.  Damn near missed the thing cause I had to turn around and get them.  Happens to every one.

Good (late) morning!

Bad morning for me.  Woke up late and it was in the high 30s and pouring rain.  Didn't really feel like getting soaked.

Think I'm going to do some schedule shuffling -- swim this afternoon, bike and lift tonight and move my run to tomorrow morning when the weather should be better.

When is it finally going to be spring?

I had a great run this morning - no pain!  Woohoo!

Swim drills tonight at pool.  I've been working on sighting, but I can't seem to swim in a straight line or sight without swallowing a bunch of water.  Any tips from you BTDT folks?  I will be able to get some OWS experience once it's warm outside.  CTC hold Saturday swims in the lake.  Not sure how many I'll get in before my first tri.

Another questions......how many days before a race do I have to modify my diet?  I was a vegetarian for almost a decade, so I eat lots of beans & veggies.  My lunch today consists of a spinach salad with cauliflower, radishes, pinto beans, hummus, carrots, etc.  I eat spinach or kale every single day.  Let me put it another way ----  I eat more fiber than any human probably ought to consume.  My diet is really light on carbs.  I don't eat processed foods at all.  I'm worried I'm going to have problems during my races.  Advice?   I would really hate to poop my pants during a race.  LOL

I have similar issues.

If the race is on Sunday, I do a fiber overload until Friday morning and then try to cut out all fiber.  Saturday morning is my biggest meal, usually french toast made from potato bread or pancakes and then a light lunch (PB&J, grilled cheese or white pasta/gnocchi) and dinner.  Favorite pre-race dinner is sugar cereal (one of the only time I eat processed food).  Race morning its applesauce and a PowerBar (and coffee) 2 hours pre-race.

I usually modify the day before --- I usually eat 1-2 bacon, egg and cheese bagels from McD's (pretty healthy) for breakfast, a health choice lunch, then boston market for dinner (turkey, red potatoes and 1 corn bread).

Race day I flush first thing with an energy shot, then I eat an energy powerbar about 2 hrs prior.  However, I am hearing pop tarts are great pre-race food, high in carbs, minimal protein.  Not sure I could eat 2 of them though, maybe 1 . . .

Sorry everyone I have been off the map for the last month.  I got laid off back in December (which is why I worked out so much for Dec & Jan), then I have been consulting since beginning of February (still looking for a permant job while working).  Not only are the hours unpredictable, but with my commute it is generally a 11-15 hr day (never can tell which).  Having said that, not a ton of motivation except to get the running in since I have a race coming up.

Shaun uses Pop Tarts pre-race.  They make me gag but they work well for him.

Sorry for all the blank posts. I guess they figured out I was posting at work and disabled it. Oh well! I don't know about anyone else but I have kind of hit a wall. I don't feel much like working out lately. I been trying to maintain by doing alternatives but I think I'm falling a little behind in the bike and swim. Is this normal?

I hit that feeling at times-Do you have a training partner. When I am dragging I go ooking for some one to ride or run with and that helps me

back from the quasi dead for a bit.  I actually updated my logs.

For years I did PB and banana sandwich and cytomax for breakfast, but last year about halfway through the season it started not working for me.  I am going to try Matza brae saturday for my HM and see how that goes.

I think its a tough time of year.  News Years is kind of far behind us, yet its not quite full tri season.  Its sort of muddy, cloudy, blah late winter.  Its kind of like being in the middle of anything -- you're too far gone to go back to the start but the end seems really far away.

For me, I know that my biggest improvements have come from consistency.  It doesn't matter how "hard" I train, if I'm not consistent, I don't see results.  Knowing that helps me stay consistent.

I like oatmeal pre-race.  Add in some fruit for quick carbs and the oatmeal for slow carbs and you should be set.

As far as walls go I think I just got through mine about a week or so ago when I noticed my knee feeling better.  That and my first tri is 2 weeks from this Sunday.

Thanks for the advice in regards to pre race nutrition, I do a lot of fiber also with no processed foods and minimal sugar. I have to say though, I love my kids gorilla munch cereal!!

I have been trying a lot of different energy boost things during our long runs like gu and powergels. Everytime I use them on a run, within minutes I start cramping. I stopped using them and just use water and seem fine. Any suggestions for sugar free things that can just be put in water for electrolytes?

NUUN is fantastic.  I tried the Hammer endurolyte tabs but they're way too chalky and leave a film.  The GU Brew Tabs look good and I've heard really good things about the peach tea flavor.
