Then my wife and I went for an easy ride with our 5 year-old. Rode to a local cafe for pizza then took the long way home. Best ride of the year. We went 7 miles at 10 mph, but the company made all the difference. Have a great weekend. Rob |

Extreme Veteran 701 Raleigh, North Carolina | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Wow ... I got back home last night from a business trip to Shanghai, China all last week. Man - what an interesting place ... I was totally surprised and impressed with Shanghai. There is no way whatsoever that would I get on a road bike or even drive a car in that city ... I have never seen such traffic. The crazy part is that even though there was so much traffic, with cars constantly weaving in and out, cutting people off, mopeds like bugs all over the place, horn blowing, et al, I never saw anyone mad, no one flipped off, no road rage or such. The bad news is I totally blew the diet for the week and worse - had no time for training whatsoever. The jet lag has not kicked in yet, so I'll try to get in a good swim, run or ride today. But next week - it's on! David ... wish you the best on your race. Finish strong dude!! ROB ... sounds like you are ready man. Your times and speed are great. Liz ... great news on the hip and especially the attitude. Keep focusing on what you can do. Edited by Dorm57 2012-05-12 6:59 AM |

Only been to Shanghai once, but it is crazy driving with very few accidents. It's like everyone knows the rules. |

I am 6 ft and fit me when I weighed 195-199, at 175 its too loose. Will offer it here before I put it on Pay it forward. Cost of shipping (which should only be a couple of dollars) is all I am asking, that and if it doesn't fit you then pass it on to someone else. |

Veteran 306 | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training David- woo-hoo!!! Congrats on shattering your goal! I agree with everyone else. I hope you enjoyed the rest of the weekend and you definitely need to brag on Monday. I've also been to shanghai. Fun city but I'm not surprised you blew your diet/exercise there. I lived in china for 6 months and gained more than 15 pounds Rob - sounds like training is going great. I'm pretty jealous. Our HIMS were the same weekend so im training vicariously through you. I must admit that I'm enjoying not training for anything right now. Although it sucks being injured, it's been at least 3 years since I didn't have the "next big race" scheduled and so I'm enjoying the downtime right now. Went camping, rafting, biking and to some hot springs this weekend with the kids and it was nice not to have to fit in a workout. But I'm just about ready t get back at it again. I'm going to try and run again on tuesday. Have a great week everyone! E |

Regular 137 Kansas City | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Vets, I know what the water temperature cutoff is for wetsuits, and all of the advantages of a wetsuit like buoyancy. Putting that aside, what do you consider "too cold" to swim without a wetsuit? I made a firm decision a while ago just to go without one for my first race in order to trim some expenses while still figuring out if this is something I'm going to do more than once. Race is Sunday and I'm sort of freaking out now and doing all the typical second guessing. I suppose if water temperature is my biggest fear right now that it means I feel good about my fitness level. Looking at water temps of 69/70, at 8:30 am. Likely be low 70's that time of day. Manageable? Or am I nucking futs? And on a side note, I don't plan on being in there very long anyway! Edited by ccoffin 2012-05-15 8:22 AM |

But, last year for my first Tri, I practiced the week before the race in 65 degrees and it wasn't too bad. Had 67 on raceday and almost felt like bath water ! Just my opinion. dwp |

Manageable? Or am I nucking futs? And on a side note, I don't plan on being in there very long anyway! I think you are okay in the 70's below that its a "per person" type of thing. I have done both sprint distance swims and an IM swim in 60's temp (IM at 62-63 and sprint at 65-66). Both with wetsuits (although the sprint was with a sleeveless) but saw folks without them. At the end of the IM swim there were people shivering and being put in the warm up tent (both with and without wetsuits). Similar for the sprint. One tip that helped me. Try putting some vaseline on your face and arms. The thought is that it provides a bit of protection and helps reduce the initial shock. Not sure if it really provided a barrior or if it was mental but I went with it. The other tip would be to get in the water ahead of time. I suspect once you start swimming you will warm up quickly. Lastly, keep an eye out for used wetsuits in the $60-80 range as they do pop up. |

Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Quick update from me. Week 2 of new plan starts today. Taking two days off from workouts was a bit difficult and seems to have raised my sense of urgency to hit it hard today. But trying to make sure I stick strickly to the planned workout. Will give it another week but thinking an easy run on Sunday may get added so I only have 2 days a week of instead of three.

My first race was 2 hours away from home near our cottage. I forgot my wetsuit at home and did not realize it until the night before. I went without in 68 degree water temp and it was fine. I do notice the bouyancy factor and if you decide to continue with the lifestyle, I would highly recommend one. Mine is an entry level 2XU and does the trick.

In my race this weekend, the water was 66F. Definitely wet suit temp for me but my friend and his wife went without and were fine. |

It totally helps. It acts as a barrier between your body and the water and totally works. Seriously. I think 70 is ok. Anything less than that is pretty cold for me, but I'm generally cold anyway. Could you rent a suit this close to the race? Some places let you rent them and then use the price of the rental against a purchase in the future. |
