Offthegrid - 2008-10-23 8:42 AM I asked my parents if they would come to see me if I did an Ironman race in the future that wasn't too far away. My mom said: "Why would we want to go to a race? What would there be for us to do there all day but stand around?" So I guess I'll never have a cheering section like other families. It makes me really sad.

I'll come cheer for you Susie...You live close to me!  <img align='middle' src='https://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/images/emoticons/smile.gif'>

Yeah, I kept meaning to ask ya' -- are you doing any PA races next year? I was thinking of trying Steelman. It'd be my first Oly. I heard the bike was hilly but the run was pretty flat.

A friend and I also plan to go up to Lake Placid to spectate and volunteer. She plans to sign up for 2010.

I'll probably be in your area around the 4th of July.  I visit my aunt and uncle every year over the holiday.  I'll come cheer you too!  Or better yet, if there is a race, we can run together!

I am such an emotional eater. Whenevet I get stressed I want to reach for the chocolate. Luckily I have resisted thus far today and for the past few weeks!!!!

Whenever I eat some, even if its a little, I want more and its harder to stop once I've started. So I just try really hard not to start at all. It usually works

Totally know what you mean. I'm the same way with all junk food. When I started really eating healthy, junk food tasted NASHTAY! Like why on earth do people think this tastes good kind of nasty. But then, a let a little slip here, had a bit there, and now, I'm back to eating junk food and thinking it tastes good. Yuck. I'm the same way with candy - I don't like candy, yet once I start eating it, I don't stop. Urgh. Good luck making it through your stressful afternoon without it! One tip I saw is to keep a small set of handweights, like 2.5 or 5 pounds, in your desk drawer. When you want to reach for candy, reach for those instead and pop off ten bicep curls or tri kickbacks or something short and fast. You aren't doing real ST, just giving your hands and mind something else to think about and giving that craving time to take a hike.

I think that sugar and all the chemicals in junk food are really addictive, so when you start, thats why you want to keep eating more, even though its really bad for you! And like you said, once you started eating healthy you could taste just how nasty junk food is, but when you're eating it regularly you just can't taste that. I'm sure junk food companies must add things to their food to keep people coming back for more

I finished the costumes for the kiddos.  Well, almost.  I do have to re-make a cowboy vest tomorrow.  I ran out of fabric so I have to wait.  It wasn't perfect so I want to try again.  The native American costume came out pretty well.  I'll have to have the kids model them so I can take pictures.  I'm now trying to make pajama pants.  Nice, cozy, flannel ones.  I have the pieces all cut out but am thinking I'll wait until tomorrow to sew them up.  A bit nervous about the elastic waist bit though.  Anyone sew????

Thats really sad! Especially for an Ironman.

My mum thinks I am crazy but she still comes to watch me race at least once a season. My MIL is really bad though - she claims to be really interested in what I do but then doesn't show up, or shows up late and blames us for telling her the wrong time!!!

Erica: It must be hard for you with kids - I completely understand why your hubby is scared to take them to a big event!

ebshot - 2008-10-23 10:42 PM Morning fellow Vamps!  Gonna try to get my run in today.  With Cole's doc appt, he won't be going to school and the other kids have a half day.  So, trying to squeeze it in around lunch time.  Gonna take Cole with me to the YMCA to see his friends and then take him out to lunch.  Should be fun!  Totally keeping him home after his doc appt.  A half day of hookie is okay right?  I think so, for a little bonding time.

Sounds great! Have a nice lunch and some quality time together I hope the appointment goes well.

Offthegrid - 2008-10-24 3:18 AM Back from my yoga class. I always dread if beforehand, and I always feel so wonderful afterward. Instructor was having us practice the beginning of crane pose today. He said to start by lifting just one side off, then the other. Everyone in the class began revolting, but I kept at it and eventually I was able to lift my right side off! I was really excited about trying to do both simultaneously, but then we moved onto something else.

Wow, thats TOTALLY awesome!

When my son has a dentist appointment I always keep him home for the rest of the day. We go out to the shops have lunch, check out the toy shops-kid stuff.. A dental appointment deserves a spoiling i reckon. The funny thing is last time the next day my son said "Mum, Can I go to the dentist every day?"

LOL - so cute!!!

Wow!!!  That's a tough one.  I have a hard enough time doing the crow and handstand thing.

My daughter does acrobatics and all kinds of dance.  She can do some amazing things.  I posted a picture in my blog not too long ago.  I asked her if she could do this and she said she didn't know but wouldn't recommend that I try it and she wouldn't do it without properly warming up.  Thanks, Exhibit A.  Safety first!!!  She cracks me up.

Wow, that photo of your daughter is amazing. I kinda wish I'd done gymnastics when I was younger, everyone is so flexible at that age, but what you don't use, you lose, very quickly!!!

She started ballet, tap and gymnastics at 3.  By 6 she was all about ballet and she used to complain about gymnastics because she only liked tumbling and not the equipment.  Fortunately her dance school offers acrobatics which solved that problem.  Now she's in 2 companies (ballet and jazz) and hopes to audition for a third (modern) next year.  She dances about 8 hours per week in a typical week (2 each ballet and jazz, 1 modern and then acro) but during Nutcracker season (now) that gets upped to anywhere between 15 and 20.  She has three roles in the Nutcracker... two ballet parts and one acro part.  It's CRAZY but she loves it.  Yes, she's very flexible and she can do all kinds of crazy stuff... I'll see if I have other pics... but the fact is that she is all about core work.  At the beginning of every hour of dance there is a really hard core set.  So on a night when she takes three classes, she has three core workouts.  She frequently complains about her abs being sore.

Evening all!

Susie, that is so sad about your fam. You could try to hook them up with other BT spectators so they find out how much fun spectating is. You know you have TONS of support here, and if any of us are close enough, we'll come cheer! Speaking of, if you ever want to come up this way and do Mooseman or Timberman, there is quite the cadre of BTers there, and I bet you could score a place to crash (I'm a bit far away for it to be practical, but you could certainly stay with me if you wanted!). Then, you would have a large, loud, and proud cheering section!

Hookie days were always the best. I loved hanging out with my mom, though it always seemed like we had "stuff" to do - those dang appts get in the way of a good day off! LOL!

Mila, I would think the crane would be easier than that over the head thing A does. Your center of gravity is tighter. Then again, I'm about as flexible as a telephone pole, what do I know?!

Joe, big congrats! Dude, those bricks are doing you good, huh? Must be the new helmet.

Meeting do suck, hardcore. I had to drive back to work for a monthly meeting, and now they are trying to say I can't get overtime for it. Um, I don't think so! Anyone added up the price of gas and riving for an hour to get here?! No, of course they haven't.

My hubby has been to watch a total of three of my races. The first one I had given blood the week before and performed abomnibaly(SP?)

Then he came to see me at the World Masters Games(here in Melbourne in 2002) this was fine but my son was not yet 2 and very active so I think it was a real workout for hubby. The last time was my olympic race and the crowds were so thick that he couldn't see anything-missed me completely.

Needless to say he doesn't enjoy the whole spectator thing. Never mind at least he doesn't put any obstacles in my path to keep competing.

Aww, that's so cute! I tried to get my BFF's kid to go to sleepaway camp this summer, and they both totally punked out on it. I went when I was 7 for a week or two, and totally loved it. Went every summer I could - and still want to go work at camp! If only they'd pay enough... *sigh*

Anywho, hope all goes well with him - and with you!

We don't have Thanksgiving. We have the Melbourne Cup, which is the first Tuesday in November and basically it's a horse race that everyone get excited about, drinks too much and throws away their money. We do get a day off work and school tho' so it's all good.

Then it's Christmas which is during our major school holidays- my son gets nearly 8 weeks off. What do you do with an 8yo for 8 weeks?

Maybe in 2010 I'll make it up to that neck of the woods. I am planning to go spectate up at Lake Placid next year, so looking forward to meeting some BTers.

My hubby was not so supportive last year. At first it was kinda cute because he said how much he missed me, blah blah blah. But then it caused a lot of problems. Now he is a LOT better. I try to do most of my workouts in the mornings (tough; I'm not a morning person), but the other week I was riding the bike trainer at night and he saw how sweaty I was and he got me a cold paper towel and put some ice in my water. Awwww.

Also, I try not to ask him to come to a race unless it's really important. I want to do my first half-marathon in May, and that's a big deal to me. I'm going to ask him to come to the finish line, but not the start line -- no sense in him having to get up at 5 a.m. if I'm not going to finish until 10 or 11 or something.

Do you have other long holidays during the school year?

Here, kids get about 3 months off during our summer... so I guess Christmastime is like the equivalent to that.

I remember my favorite Christmas card ever. It was on an Internet forum and everyone who wanted traded addresses, so you got cards from all over the world. One of the cards from Australia had Santa in shorts sitting in a beach chair with a pina colada.

It is very GOOD news that you're done (and that means I am, too) but it's very BAD news that we cap at 100% because we have some folks that might not meet their goal without some divine intervention, so those 100+%s would have helped with that a lot.  With that said, I haven't been lurking on blogs lately to see if maybe some people just aren't up to date but I'll try to do that this morning.
