Just lookin at my calender, I can't believe that the Carlsbad Triathlon is next Sunday.  You remember that one don't you Jay?   Best part about this race is that it kicks off a week vacation in Del Mar for me.

Ha, why yes, yes I do!  Good thing I'm not racing it, I'm all facked up this past week.

I have a question for you, maybe Trina can answer?

I have a huricane floor pump I love. It's a great pump, but my wife doesn't have the strength to pump her tires with it. Is there a air pump out there that would be easy for her to use?

Didn't have much time yesterday evening, but decided to go out for a nice easy run.  Figure I was at about a 10 minute pace from the "feel" and it went great / was not even breathing hard afterwards.  After work today, decided to take on the 1000m w/o stopping again.  Wednesday was 43 minutes.  Today I hit 37 minutes!!!!  Was doing 50m free / 25m back repetitions.  Did the last 325 straight through with freestyle.  Felt very comfortable in the water.

Pretty sure what I experienced over the last week was a case of overtraining and the reduced volume over the past 1.5 weeks has helped.

Again, appreciate all of the help and support!

ADD ON -- To really make the day headed out after dinner for my first ride on the roads up here in Naperville.  Amazing how nice/smooth they are.  Times on bike for effort were markedly better.

Hmmm... I haven't used the hurricane floor pump.  Is there a lot of resistance to it?  I have a Pedro's floor pump which seems fairly easy to use with not much resistance.  For what its worth, my wife was able to pump her MTB tires with it.

brick94513 - 2010-07-02 8:07 AM My wetsuit was getting a little tattered, so I finally broke down and bought a new one.  Since the one I have is definately still usuable, I decided to go with a sleeveless suit for some of my races in more tempid water.  I really like my 2XU suit, but I could find a sleeveless suit in my size anywhere.  So, I opted to try a Blueseventy.  I'm curious to see how it will compare to my 2XU.

Are you goin sleeveless for Carlsbad?  I dont know what the ocean temp is down there, but i bet it's warmer than your last one!

I was thinking about it.  I would imagine that the water temp is over 60 degrees down there.  Hopefully it arrives by the time I leave on Friday.

My only plan is to go all out and see if I can hit some PRs on the bike and run.  I would really like to hit a sub 20 5k off the bike.

You better start running some then slacker!!

I know you were joking, but there is some truth to that.  I started my half mary program again last month and things seem to be going well.  It will take a few more months to get back to my previous fitness, but at least I'm moving forward.  In February, after a couple months of not running, I did hit a personal best for a 5k at 19:38, but that was a stand alone 5k race on a flat course.  Realistically, I will probably be closer to 21 minutes.

Happy 4th everyone!

Is everyone watching the Tour?  I'm sitting here watching the first stage right now.  Pretty good start for the U.S. yesterday.  And, for our Canadian friend, Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin) had a nice TT too.  I think there are only two Canadians in the Tour, Hesjedal and Barry, correct?

Just found out that tomorrow the TDF is going literally 2 blocks away from the house we lived in while in Brussels (we lived in a small town callede Overijse).  Shame that we could not have been there one year longer to see it in person.

On the training side, today went great in the pool.  Again did 1000m non-stop, this time with the final 400m being all crawl + negative splits.  Time's gone down in last three work outs from 43 minutes to 37 minutes to 35 minutes and it's feeling much better.  Form still has a lot of room for improvement, but at least I'm back to where I can actually swim.

Likely heading out for a run in a bit.

Now for the real irony -- have figured out over the last month that the activity that makes me sorest / is killing my hip is actually playing golf!!!  Only thing I can figure out is being on my feet for 5 hours straight with shoes that don't have quite as much support.

Finally, heading out Wednesday AM for a week in Idaho at a lake with my brother.  Likely will be too cold to swim (sub 70), but will get in some runs and will use the trip as an opportunity to start on my core conditioning

Enjoy the day!

Tim,

Would work great if the wetsuit I bought fit.....  Picked up a medium 2XU used suit about 1.5 weeks back.  It's in great shape and length wise is fine.  However, can't get it closed around me.  Heading out on the plane Wednesday AM so no time to get a hold of one....

Regardless of your opinion about Lance, the guy is a cycling legend!  As for Team Radio Shack, I put my props behind Levi Leipheimer.

Bummer... The 2XU suits fit tight.  I think their sizing chart runs on the small side.  I'm anxious to compare 2XU to Blueseventy when my new suit finally gets here.

Hey all, I'm back from vacation, pulled in late last night.  Good time, though I never actually ran or swam...  Lots of hiking, and some biking though.  This morning I did a 4 on the 4th run before our town parade, that was cool.  I pulled off an average of 8:15 minutes/mile!!  fastest I've ever run at that distance.  I'll get my logs updated sometime in the next day or two.  Gotta go unpack now.

Welcome back!  Missed you around here.  It seems a lot of us are in and out as summer rolls along.  I'll be leaving for San Diego on Friday, get home the following Saturday, then leave for a week at Lake Shasta on Monday.  Crazy, but great family time.  I'm fortunate to have a job that allows for so much flexibility.

Glad to see your confidence is gaining.  It's reassuring to know you can do the distance prior to the race.

But keep in mind, swimming gains usually come from improvement in technique: balance, body position, or propulsion.

From Shane Eversfield, Total Immersion Master Coach:

Swimming has the distinction among endurance sports or being the most technique oriented.  Since water is 7 times more dense than air, even elite, world-class swimmers are just 9-10 percent efficient.  For the rest of us, just 2-4 percent of our energy expenditure actually moves us forward... A 1 percent increase in efficiency can yield 25 percent in performance gain.

... world-class swimmers devote about 90 percent of their training to technique - both through drills and low-moderate intensity swimming with specific technique focal points.

Just a reminder not to forget about drills.

Tim,

Understand.  I'll get back on them right after the tri on the 25th.  Without them there's no way that I'll be able to make long term gains.

Got out early this morning to beat the heat.  Jay, I don't know how you do it in the desert.

Tempo run today.  For some reason, I've been struggling with the speedwork lately.  Despite hitting the pace, it just felt like a harder effort than I'm accustomed.  I think there are a couple of contributing factors: 1. decreased running volume; 2. increased body mass.  While I'm a pretty small guy, I have gained body mass from increased volume in cycling and swimming.

My running schedule is a little behind for HIM in September and a tentative marathon in December.  However, at this point, I would rather remain conservative and find alternative races if I'm not ready.

This weekend has been good and bad for me. I was so excited about the new bike it's about all I did!! I only swam today and did no running. I have been stretching and foam rolling so the knee is feeling better but I won't know for sure till I get back to running. I plan on doing a brick tomorrow to start off the last week before taper for evergreen.

On the positive side I'm on fire on the road bike I did a 42 mile ride Saturday and a 62 mile ride on Sunday. On both I averaged 20 mph!!! I spent a considerable time in the drops and getting used to the aero position. I'm really happy about where I am with that. I also made a friend that lives on a lake 5 minutes from me and offered me use of it to swim anytime I want. Perfect!!! Swimming went ok today but my endurance sucks. I'm sure I'll have to stop a time or two to re compose myself in the oly.

Pretty cool to see a couple of you guys hae your first olympic distance races coming up!

Dave: 07/11.  I know you know the course.  It is fun and fast.

Brian: 07/17.  You'll do fine.  I know you are concerned about the swim, but I know you can survive it.  Sure your time might not be where you want it, but you will get it done.  Swim what you can, then take breaks (breast, back, float, etc.), and then resume swimming.  The bike and run will be a drop in the bucket for you.

Good Luck to you both!

Man, what a blow to Garmin Transitions yesterday!  Christian Vande Velde broke a couple of ribs and is out of the Tour.  Tyler Farrar broke his wrist, but is still going to try and ride.

The last couple days have been full of crashes with some pretty significant injuries.  But, historically, the first few days are full of crashes as the riders are anxious at the onset.  So, this leads me to wonder, why all the complaining about the Stage 2 route?  The guys knew the route and I'm sure pre-rode the leg.  These guys are professionals.  Shouldn't they be able to handle the conditions?  Agree?  Disagree?

Regardless, its only going to be worse this morning as they ride the cobblestones.
