I have an etiquette question about the swims with friends also.

One of the ladies has a house on the lake and that is where we are swimming from. They are paying the swim coach for help, not paying me (I don't want to be paid, don't expect it, just explaining the situation). They just invited me because they know I swim and race tri.

So, is it terribly rude if I do my own workout? Like last time I waited with whoever was last in the water, made sure no one was in the water alone, encouraged etc. and got the nickname of "lifeguard". This time I would kinda like to swim a hard set of 3 x 400 descend for time but that will mean I am not really paying attention to everyone else. Or I could take it easy and help while they swim then just do my own thing at the end.

Thanks Wink.

I don't think there is anything wrong with you trying to get e workout in at all.  They know you're a triathlete and probably assume you want to get a swim in too.  If you think it's a good idea you can ask them if they have a problem with you swimming while they are doing their own workouts.

Another option would be to attempt to time your sets with theirs, so that you are getting done in time to see them finish or start and provide insights at the end of each set.  You could plan to take longer breaks and make your sets harder to compensate for the long break.

As far as the tips you would like to give them, I think you're pretty close to nailing it.  If they are new to swimming I think it's important to make sure they know they shouldn't be in the water by themselves unless they have an emergency flotation device.  Someone can be onshore watching, as you have already been doing, but they need a partner to keep an eye out.  Sighting would be the technical thing to discuss since they aren't used to doing that in the pool, but you're doing that too.

It worked out good today. I just always waited a few minutes and went last with coach in the middle. So newbie, coach, slowest newbie, me. Newbies were never in the water by themselves and I could still swim for time. I am totally comfortable bringing up the rear and am the most comfortable in open water. Not much bothers me - fish, water weeds, boats, whatever. Coach is a great swimmer and swam competitive from a young age but even she said she has not been opening her eyes in the lake ha ha ha!

The only other couple of things I thought of today for tips to share are exiting the water to run through transition and turning around the buoys.

Swim workout at a local lake this morning. Distance- 2.4 miles. Water temp- good. Visibility- na. Across the lake and back is about 1.2 miles and the 2 people with me only did it once. I wanted to get the iron distance for confidence, so I did it a second time solo... is that a bad idea? It was along a dam, so I oculd have easily swam over to the rocks at any time. Got a little anxious at one point wondering what was in the depths below me and then I thought I "heard" a snake (not sure exactly how that works when your head is in the water... ha). This was a good swim. My time was consistent all 4 lengths and I got really comfortable with the way I plan to sight during the second half of the swim.

Tony! It's close! Why am I nervous??? ha! In the words of Winston Churchill, "Never give in--never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy."

Will great swim today. It's good to do the long OWS to get your confidence up, you can swim the distance but nice to do it in the open water. I think it is always best to swim with someone or at least have someone watching you while you swim. We are getting down to go time now. I just hope I can be calm and relaxed come race time. I can't believe it.

Great swim Will! Of course it is a bad idea to swim by yourself. And of course I have done it at least 4 times this summer.......

Do as I say, not as I do or so the saying goes.

Will......nice ride in the rain and I have to agree do not swim alone!! Congrats on the distance though.

Vero...sorry about the leg cramps and congrats on hanging I there and finishing! Wear the cape, I also would go with Superman yes it is Bon Jovi relayed he has a Superman tattoo...

Tracy.....hope you are feeling better, I have to agree with Brenda those abalones do it look appetizing.

Jenn... I am reading the triathletes training bible and they talk about how science wanted to discover the secrets of flight so they studied the Bumblebee their conclusion is that a bumblebee is not capable of flight. But no one ever told the bumblebee he thinks he can fly and it doesn't cross his mind that he cant so the moral is......if you think you can or you think you can't......your probably right! You can totally do it!

Dirk.....Iam happy to hear the bike is good and you are healing.

Dina...I hope you took some time off this week to recover and are feeling more rested. And that is awesome that you are helping those ladies with their swim.

Karl.....try not to get frustrated you will get it.

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend I have all the trackers downloaded

I got a place to stay for tonight so we will be heading up to Madison today we should be there around 2. It also looks by Tony's times we will be at our aide station while he is coming thru!! Our shift is from 6-10 pm right on Capitol square i am so looking forward to cheering people on It is definetly gonna be a Great weekend!
Tony are they still doing a mass start? If not do you have your swim start time?

JoAnne give Tony a huge Junkies shout out from me. I wish I could be there in the worst way. I am going to absolutely have to plan on volunteering next year to cheer the rest of you on because this is driving me nuts.

What do you say Junkies? How about a volunteer team?

Got up early for a morning group ride. Right as I was getting ready to walk out the door Tiff called in a panic. Her daughter (age 19) has been in an accident. I'm in a bit of panic/shock and have not heard anything more so just sitting here praying. In case any junkies happen by and have a minute say a prayer for them.

Derek,  You'll do great tomorrow!  Will this be your last race of the season?

There are so many people racing tomorrow!  As a recap of who's racing, I'm going to post those racing and tracking info:

Tony - Ironman Wisconsin -

  • Tracking: My Athlete Live You will need a bib number (2315) and Adobe Flash.
  • The tracking will not begin until Tony comes out of the water, at an estimated time of 9 AM CDT.

Jonathan (89) and Warren (311) -

Matt - Rev3 Cedar Point - My Athlete Live  I don't have Matt's bib number yet but I will post it as soon as I know.

  • Competitive note:  These 70.3 races with Matt and Warren have been a trash talking event for much of the summer.  There is a bit of 70.3 competition going on between these two, so cast your wagers and place your bets on the one you think has the best shot at this, the "Junkie War II."

For the above races you may track online as well as through the phone apps, or both.  I have not posted the links for online tracking, other than Tony's, but they can be googled and followed fairly easily.  For those online and tracking try to post for others in the forum so everyone can see how the Junkies are doing.

Derek - Shubie Dooby - No tracking.

Vero - Superman Sprint - No tracking.

Besides all of the Junkies racing, I know about 5-6 others that are racing as well.  Most of them are at Rev3 Cedar Point.

Represent well Junkies!!!

JoAnne it is indeed a mass start for the swim. I think this may be the last time that happens since there was a lot of talk about changing it to a wave start. They could not work out the logistics on how to do it since it's a wading start. The race begins at 7 am. I am hoping to cross that finish line with you and Brenda on shift. I'll do my best to get there while you guys are there and am looking forward to seeing you both near or at the finish.

I just wanted to thank all the Junkies for supporting me the last two years and helping to get to where I am today. I can't thank everyone enough for all the help, support, knowledge and experience you guys have shared with me these last two years. There is no way I would have ever made this far without you all. You have all become my extended family. I love you guys, thank you.

I can't believe I'm less than 24 hours away from doing this. When the thought to do an Ironman came to fruition two years I never really thought I'd actually see it through. It's one thing to dream something up and another to follow through on it. The whole idea started after I read that book "You are an Ironman" by Jacques Steinberg (damn him!) and the dream took root. It is absolutely amazing to me in less than two years that I'm actually in a position to do this.

When you embark on these journeys sometimes you reallly never think about getting to the end of them. They are so long, there is so much time spent on preparing for these things that you never really think you are going to see the end. Every training run for IMWI that I did ended the same way I always imagined myself sprinting down the chute, hearing the crowd, hearing Mike Rielly call my name out and running through the finish. I didn't think that day would ever get here and it almost upon me.

I still can't warp my mind around the fact that I am going to be doing an Ironman tomorrow that I have essentially been training for the last 4 years. It must be like what a professional athlete must feel on Super Bowl Sunday. I know that is what this is going to be like for me tomorrow. On the one hand I'm totally in awe of everything going on around me and I would be lying right now if I didn't have fear and doubt about this. But there is another part of me that believes and knows that I can do this. I have put in endless hours of training, swimming countless meters, biking miles upon miles and running until it was dark out day after day after day.

Why did I decide to do an Ironman? I have thought about this often and the answer is so very simple, just to see if I had what it takes to do it. Nothing more and nothing less. I wanted to do something very hard and challenging that would push me beyond my boundries and push me to my limits. I wanted to just do something that I'd have to work hard at and something that would not be given but earned. I also felt this is how I should be enjoying and living life. I can say no matter how it goes tomorrow I don't regret one minute of all the time and effort spent on preparing for this. It's made me a better person.

So say a prayer for me and all the athletes, volunteers and spectators tomorrow. I'll be thinking about you all tomorrow and I know you'll be with me while I'm out there. May I do all the Junkies proud tomorrow no matter what happens I will not give up or quit. I didn't do that one time in training and I will not do it tomorrow. May my Ironman dream become a reality. It's not about medals or titles it's about deciding on who you want to be.

wow! Definitely a lot of us racing tomorrow. If I count right there are 6 of us racing plus a wife, and at least 2 more volunteering,

Junkies Representing

I am finally all checked in, my bib # is 471. I believe the only tracking that will be available is on the Rev3 site, at least that is all I could find. Hopefully I can talk my wife into posting updates onto Facebook page.

Overall right now I fel pretty good, but am a little concerned about the weather. I checked the lake and it was smooth and calm, and then during the pre-race meeting they talked that they may have to move the swim to the completely other side of the peninsula because of expected winds. If this happens the transition will be over 1/2 mile from the swim exit! But it is what it is!

Tony, get your butt in bed... ha!

Well, this week was the first of my "big" weeks for training. I'm excited that I managed to do all the scheduled WO's plus a little extra... 18 hours total. Rest day is tomorrow, so I can follow all the junkies in their races.

I dont know much about bikes... but wondering if the veterans here can give me some advice. A friend offered to let me borrow his Zipp 808's for my race. My race is usually flat and windy. Should I take my friend up on the offer?

Last minute check in before I drive down to Rancho Seco. 200 miles on the road tonight for a 53 minute race tomorrow. I must be an addict.

Dina, I'm praying for Tiff and her daughter.

Tony, have a great race! I'm going to try and do my race and drive home in time to track your finish.

Everybody else racing, have a great race too!

I didn't get the cape pulled together, but I did manage to get a pair of red tri shorts delivered in time so at least I'll have the colors right. I'll try to check in with maybe a picture or two tomorrow night.
