Wow! Lots of turtles!

Leston - good luck on the race and getting back into Tri training.

WAEF - welcome back, what did you bring me?  (Just kidding!)

Diane - good luck with the lessons!

Swam today.  Actually one of my best swims in awhile.  Kept pushing for short breaks, good form, etc.  No swim demons, I had to circle swim the first half, between that and the water getting kicked up by a packed pool that I guess I forgot to think about my breathing issues!

LRR - did a couple of extended laps based upon your suggestion.  Hit a 125, nice!  Also, emailed Profile design and they said it was no issue to move the bar-end shifters.  Now I just need to get some good bar tape.

Just back from a nice run. Ran for time not distance. Man do I ever prefer it that way. No pace pressure, just keep moving. It was wonderful!!! I find when I run for time I can run much longer without a walk break. I speed up and slow down by lengthening or shortening my stride and adjusting the foot turnover. That way I don't have to stop and walk nearly as much. Maybe it's mental. I'm not sure. But I really enjoy running like this. It's fun. I don't even think about the clock and ironically today I felt like I was running faster and stronger. Didn't have the Garmin so I don't know for sure. All I know is it was a delight. I felt free with no pressure. Just enjoying the process and looking forward to the next time I can go out and play like this.

Welcome back everyone!!!

Leston...so glad you are back at. The pics were great. Time to get swimming

So glad your daughter completed her first 5 K Pete...I am sure you are a proud pop!!!

Waef, congrats on the wedding. Hope you are enjoying wedded bliss.

And Gary is now a triathlete...so wonderful!!!

I did go to the Boston Marathon. I stood right next to Ryan Hall at the start line. Got some great pics. I even wished him luck. I literally could have touched him thats how close I was. It is very intense to see these elite athletes at the start. Iwill officially say that running the Boston Marathon is on my bucket list!!!! I think I can do it next year. I will raise funds for the Crohns and colitis foundation. Theres no way I'll ever qualify no matter how old I get!LOL

I have been working my a$$ off which is why I have been so quiet. I will have biked over 500 miles this month (after tommorow) and I have had one of my biggest run months ever. Yesterday I did an OWS for 1 hour. The water was 62*. hard to believe but its been pretty warm here. I have my first sprint on May10th. I have a  HIM relay on June 7th. I am the swimmer ( big surprise) and the runner(ugh). I have my HIM on June 20. I am mentoring a group of women who are doing the Danskin on July 27th ( oh yeah...I am racing that too). SO needless to say, I have been busy. To top it all off my Dad is having major back surgery in Boston and he will be staying with me while he recovers.

Today is a short run and  a long swim
Strive on turtles!!!!

I CAN RUN! I CAN BIKE! I AM FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

The PT was very pleased with my progress! He said all of the inflammation went down, my strength improved TREMENDOUSLY! He did recommend Pilates 2x per week for maintenance, but it's $30 per class.... It's kinda pricey when you add it to swim lessons... I said I'd get back to them!

I'm thinking the first thing I wanna do is dust off Jaipur (my bike) and take it out for a spin... then,  maybe a run, but I really have to practice my swim... can I do them ALL today?

QUESTION: Which I didn't bring up at PT (too scared of the answer) Do you think I can do the Sprint Tri on May 9th? Think that with a few rides and a few runs, I can do that (not as an A race) just to finish?

Diane - Congrats!  As for doing the sprint, I don't see why not unless your concern is your not 100% and you think you may end up reinjuring yourself.   Take it easy and you will rock that race.  Goodluck!

This week I have been sticking to one workout a day and it feels like I am slacking off!  LOL, I will get over that quickly!

Diane - ease into three a days.....pace yourself gal.....ride and swim fine.....run is most dangerous for re-injury.....take your time....May should be fine as long as it is ONLY to finish and you are willing to walk if you feel like you are beginning to break down....don't don't don't push....you don't want to jeopardize your season....

Gary....I think there is a 150 in there in the next swim or two.....but it is really just about a push off and a stroke or two....keep doing it.....and before you know it, one time you will just decide to keep going.  If you are just sliding a counter across the tiles at the end of the pool you will amaze yourself at how far you swim while NOT counting the laps in your head.  By the way, have you tried swimming non stop for 5 minutes, or 7 minutes or 10?  That really works best for me....BASICALLY any time I don't know how FAR I have swam I can just keep on going....

Mav - welcome back - the Boston marathon is the Boston marathon regardless of how you get there.....the medal and jacket is no different if you run a 2:07 or a 5:07....GO GET EM GIRL!!!

Leston - you have risen from the departed.....LOL....I thought you were building a new house or something....good to see you back.

LRR - will have to try the time thing but for me it's laps.  I swear I would probably be best off in a 300 meter pool, the turns just throw me off (or I should say the turns make it too easy to stop).

Volunteered at RocketChix Tri today.  Worked the pool section.  Very cool to see so many different swimmers, started picking up on how my swim coach catches issues with me. "Ahh, her head/body drops when she breathes.  She is picking up her head, then wow if my form was half as good I would fly like her."  Just cool to see.    Spent a fair amount of time yelling at woman who were doing the backstroke and failed to see the flags "edge, EDGE, EDGE!!!!! Bonk" ouch that had to hurt.  Managed to keep quite a few woman from hitting the edge but I started to sound like a drill sargent.   First woman out of the pool flew, she just glided thru the water and made it look so easy!!!  Had to leave right after the last woman got out of the pool so didn't get to see any of the rest.  Would have loved to seen the transitions.

Gary - excellent that you volunteered....I try to volunteer at least once a year for a race.  I cannot begin to understand why SO MANY people get up at dark thirty to write on me in magic marker so I can go play.....seems like they would get into it and decide to race too.

As far as swimming, try the time thing and forget about the turns.....watching others....realize their mistakes but focus on the really good form swimmers, subconsciously I hope their effortless swimming burns into my brain so that I can be more fluid.  I swam this morning early and was finishing up as another guy was in the pool...I watched him struggle and struggle and realized it was silly to sit and watch him.  He came to a stop - yes a stop - to breathe, and then tried to get himself going.  I really wanted to recommend that he get a lesson or two but didn't think it was my place.  I am not a great swimmer as we all know but I looked like Ryan Lochte compared to him....made me smile....notice I didn't say Michael Phelps....he's a pothead....LOL!

I went to pilates class tonight with Debbie and I think the old abs will be sore tomorrow...I really need to work on my core and maybe this is the way to try to consistently do it.

Have a great week Turtles

Sorry Bryan, you were wrong there was not 150 in my next swim, it was a 200!!!!  And I could have kept going if I hadn't run out of time.  At the 100 meter mark I was struggling big time but just kept going, around 125 I realized I was getting air, tried to relax, and kept going.  At 150 I knew I could do 50 more.  Got to 200, was going to do another 50 but checked the clock and realized I was running late.  May be a 250 on Weds if this is a true break through!

Hi! Everybody is doing so great. Keep it up.

I'm sorry I haven't been posting much. I'm having a hard time with balancing everything. I had a routine down but marriage just changes everything. I have hardly been online since we got back. Anyway, I thought I'd pop in and say hello before I lose my Turtle status completely.

Training is coming along but it seems I'm getting slower not faster. So I've decided to just focus on training for time. Keeping track of pace was too frustrating.

I'll be back. Promise. In the meantime, keep up the great work.

Gary - you ROCK!!!!!!  Way to go....you are awesome.  Keep up the good work....but don't overdo it....if there is anything that can allow you to add more than 10% duration or distance each week it is the swim....GREAT job....it is a mind breakthrough....mental mental mental....keep it up....I am so happy when I am wrong......smile.

by the way, I am going to be out of town the rest of the week.....I will talk to you all soon...a meeting in Dallas and then a celebration as Taylour graduates from college this weekend.....woohoo!!!!

CONGRATS to your Daughter!  I have news on my kid too... It looks like he'll be going to UCSB (University of California at Santa Barbara) IF it doesn't burn down before he gets there  Anyway, he's already got a class schedule worked out, and he's getting excited about it... so I REALLY hope he goes!

I missed my tri today, My shin splints are bothering me again... yep, 1 week out of therapy, and with no runs over 3 miles - and that was done with a 5/1 run/walk ratio... and no bike over 6 miles... I got my PT extended... but something more needs to be done... I'm frustrated!

I think retail therapy only works if you actually buy something  LOL... ah well, I had a great day looking at new cars...

I'm here Bryan!!!! Congrats on your daughter, very exciting!!!!

Dianne sorry about your shin splints...but better safe than sorry...there will be plenty of races this season!!!

I am doing my first tri of the season in the am. Its a sprint, but the bike is VERY hilly. Its actually part tof the a Boston Marathon course but we are going up the hills instead of down. I swam the course this afternoon and it was fun. I am tired as my HIM training is peaking but I will do my best in the am. RR to follow. Weather for tommorow is sunny with blustery gusts of 30-50 mph. This should be a very interesting race

Hey Bryan, congrats to your daughter!

Mav - hope the race went well!

Diane - You are going to be so ready for your first Tri!

Looks like I am doing a Barathon next friday billed as 6 miles, 6 bars, 6 beers.  Should be fun.  There is a century ride later this month with a 52 mile option.  WOuld love to do it but am doubting I will.  Had a nice 20 mile ride today.

Take care everyone!

Card - dangit....shin splints...or any injury....just stinks....keep up the therapy...get well.

Mav - RR is due....hope all went well.  Enjoying the mothers day thing with my three girls - that's my mom, wife and daughter.  All is well.

I had a blast!!!! It was a weird tri because the wind was so bad they had to shorten the swim because they could not secure the bouys!!!The bike was 15.4 miles and the run was 5 K. I came in 3rd in my AG. Not sure how many were in my AG but I had a great time. I will write a more detailed report later.

Hey all!

Mav congrats!  I need to track down your RR.

Order the TI book, I don't have a lot of patience and have heard good things about it so worth the $12.  Got tired of leaning my bike against the wall in my office (and the scuff marks on the wall) so made myself a bike stand out of PVC.  Not great but it does the job and probably $3 worth of parts.  One part holds the front wheel and I have a 2nd that lifts the back wheel for maint.

Take care all!

Talked it over with DH and I'm going to have to simplify my life and my schedule. Tris are too much for me. I can't keep up with the training for all three sports. One or more keeps falling behind. Just before the wedding, I made partner in my firm and it's a lot of responsibility and travel. I have a great staff but it's still a ton of work.

Between getting adjusted to married life and dealing with work, tri training is becoming a burden. So I'm dropping my tri races for this year. Still planning to do the full marathon and maybe the charity bike ride. Not sure about that one even though I raised the money already. But training for it is putting too much pressure on my schedule.

Will keep working on all three sports but focus on running and do whatever I can with the others. Just for fun and variety, not for racing.

Thanks for all the support and advice. I'll still be on BT. Just not actively training for a tri. Wanted to let you know.

WAEF - Sorry to hear you are dropping your Tri training but life always throws curves at us.  I am very glad you will still hang around BT.  Good luck on your new married life and on your career.

Hey all, just checking in.  Not sure what my last update was (too lazy to back up and look) so here goes:

Bought a set of rollers from another BT'er for $55, hoping to have it early next week.  Should be interesting!  Built myself a little stand to hold the bike when it is in the house, a 2nd part will prop the rear wheel up for maint but still working out the design a tad.  Ordered the TI book and waiting for it to be delivered.  I am 2 months from my next Tri and have hit 200meters once.  Not good at this slow improvement stuff (insert Gary's typical swim whine here).  Bike work is going well, not getting the mileage I want but speed is improving but I need to adjust the pedals, one pedal is getting harder to unclip.  Running some but not much, it just doesn't give me the joy it once did.  Probably because I worry about my knee the entire time.

Well, LRR when you are right you are right!  Got in the pool today, warmed up 50 meters than did 400 meters continuous!  Finished in 9:23 so about 2:21/100meters (fast for me!!).   Could have kept going a little farther but I have my race (barathon) and needed to leave a little for that.  Thanks all for your support!!!  I do believe that masters class has been helping me by pushing hard.  I just needed a LSS (Long Slow Swim) to see the benefits of it.  It was very much a mental challenge "you are getting air, relax, just get to the next marker and than may be stop, think about posture, was that a shark?..... ".

Thanks Gary. You're awesome! This really feels like the right thing to do. I am still training just not investing so much mental energy in it. Our focus is on getting our marriage off to a strong start. Getting to know and understand another person is a full time job in itself. I guess you all knew that already. I'm just discovering it. And nothing else feels as important as this to me.

But don't get me wrong. This is a big year for me. Training for my first marathon. So I'll be on here and looking to all of you for support. Given my pace, I'll be happy with a six and a half hour finish. Very happy. In part because I think I can do that pretty easily. And my goal right now is to keep all parts of my life in perspective so I can invest the rest in us. He's doing the same so I think we have a really good shot at making this work.

I've learned more about myself in the weeks since the wedding than in a lifetime of living. It's really intense. But really rewarding. Thanks for understanding. And thanks for all the support.
