I watched most of stage 2 yesterday as well while attending to my hangover (Innocent)and wasn't sure why they were bellyaching either.  Do they assume because of their level of skill that they should have someone control the weather for their races?  What I don't understand is what the significance was of them all riding in at the finish like they did.  Doesn't that only give the guy that won the stage a bigger lead for the next stage?

Hey guys it's your lone woman checking in.

My running is sucking even worse than it has in the past.

Unless it vastly improves in the next two months, I'm gonna have to pull out of the Austin Olympic Tri in September. I'm not going to embarrass myself.

I need serious help with my run. I have broken in the orthodics and have no pain (well, a bit of pain which goes away after icing), but I cannot seem to break through that running wall. I know I need to lose weight, but I see people on the trail much larger than me just trotting along.

I think I should hire a triathlon coach and just go right out and ask him if there's any hope for me given my horrible run.

Does anyone have any suggestions on books I could buy to help? Drills? I mean - I get out there and my HR is in Zone 5 within 30 seconds and I'm huffing and puffing.

Are you following some sort of program or are you just winging it?  I only mention that because maybe you just need to start w/ something slower or less volume?  Are you hauling right out of the gate?  A coach might not be a bad idea if you're just clueless why that's happening, just be prepared to spend a small fortune for one

What I don't understand is what the significance was of them all riding in at the finish like they did.  Doesn't that only give the guy that won the stage a bigger lead for the next stage?

The logic for the peleton's slower tempo was to allow the "big name" races to rejoin the group.  Once these riders tag on the back of the peleton, they all receive the same time.  The mentality is that these guys shouldn't be eliminated due to a crash in a non-strategic leg of the race.  Yes, it does allow the break away rider to stay out front, but they figure they will catch him in due time.  I guess it is a form of sportsmanship among the riders.

I guess the real controversy stemmed from them not sprinting from the peleton for second place.

Brian, nice rides on the new bike!  Nothing like a little bling to make you get out there and go fast!

TDF:  I can't watch it (don't have cable) but I've been following online a bit.  Don't they always bellyache?  Damn roadies, always complaining about something.  Sealed

I can certainly understand the frustration of the true contenders, they are just trying to hang in there and be safe until the race really begins.  To get caught up in someone elses goofiness in the first few days would be tough.  Their whole season can go into this one race, to get taken out would suck.

This weekend's race plan...  I'm actually going to be doing the 880yd swim portion of the sprint on Saturday (as a relay with my wife, she wants to do the bike/run with a friend who is doing the tri, but has not swam a stroke in 6 months), then the full Oly tri on Sunday.

I have not gotten as much swimming in as I'd like, but I think I'll be fine.  Just going to hammer it Saturday (since there's no bike/run afterwards), then cruise at a more relaxed pace Sunday for the Oly.  I'm REALLY trying not to set any expectations for the Oly, I just want to experience the distance and have fun.  I know I can do the distances, but the swim and bike are both pushing my current abilities.  And the run, while well within my current distances, I don't know exactly what to expect following the swim/bike.

My 'goals' are to swim smooth and relaxed (hoping for sub 2:00/100), bike controlled and conservatively (guessing ~16 mph) and then follow it up by running 9 minute miles (but will be happy with anything sub 10mm).  And of couse to have solid error free and fast transitions, cause hey, free speed!

btw, I turned 40 last week.  And I'm in the best shape I've ever been in my life!  My wife said I should buy a road bike for my birthday.  Smile

Happy birthday!!! do it!! buy a bike!

Tim, thanks! I'm confident I can do it too. I'll probably have to break it into 1/4s but that's ok. I doubt I'll be the last guy out of the water and even if I am I doubt I'll be last to finish.

TDF...cry-babies!!! These guys knew the route a year ago. Where were the complaints then? I understand the Peleton waiting since most of those guys had obligations to their team leaders anyhow, but not to sprint for 2nd was stupid. My big complaint wouldn't have been the course but the way the accident was handled. When the first guy went down they should have had someone waving flags coming into the corner so the other riders would slow down in time and not pile onto each other.

Little bummed here.  In my opinion, trisports.com is kind of lagging on my wetsuit purchase.  I placed the order on the morning of July 1st (Thursday) and selected 3-5 day ground delivery.  Well, I was following up on the order today and their customer service department stated it was packaged, but hadn't been shipped yet!

So, I guess I'll be swimming in my old suit this Sunday as I doubt it will arrive before we leave on Friday.

I have never really followed cycling but the words EPO and doping are certainly media buzzwords that everyone has heard.  From that article, it seems like Landis has lost credibility because he has changed his story, and all this came up AFTER he got busted, no?  If this crap has been going on for so long by these other elite riders, why is it they never got caught, but somehow HE did?  Seems fishy to me.  Like he's looking to discredit them and have it somehow amount to a personal gain for him.  His rep's already tarnished.  Even if he manages to win something he will be looked at as a cheater, regardless of all his passed drug tests, so I'm not sure why he continues w/ this nonsense.

dunno.  I'm leaning toward a tri bike, since I don't really like to road ride.  If I were to buy new right now, I'd probably go with the Motobecane Nemesis, for under $900 it's quite the bang for the buck.

More realistically, I'll start perusing craigslist for something used.  I've seen the occasional P2K or equivilant show up for $800 or less in the past.  Of course any number of basic 105 equipped road bikes would do me just fine, I'll see what I can find.

I also see that Leader is selling aluminum tri frames for $160, it'd be fun to build a bike up too.

decisions...

I know more about baseball than I do about cycling, and to draw a parallel, while Canseco is a liar, cheat and jerk, he has also been proved to be right about pretty much everything he said related to drug use...

So I'm about a month from my next event, what should I be focusing on for the next 3 weeks? Swim will always be technique for me, but the bike, I'm not sure what to do with. I am going to keep going w/ my 1/2M plan for September for the run, should I be doing shorter faster rides or keep going overdistance and just be happy w/ whatever speed I happen to average?

Alright, the upcoming race looks like a sprint.  So, here's my two cents:

Swim: Stay status quo.  Keep emphasis on drills.  Do at least one swim equivalent to race distance about a week before the race.

Bike: In the next two weeks, I would mix in some speed intervals and hill repeats.  Push your HR a few beats below threshold for these workouts.  Keep your long rides over race distance, but at an effort that keeps you in your zone 2 HR.  The week prior to the race I would only do light riding to keep the legs loose.

Run: Stay on your current program.  However, the week of the race fall back.  The program you are using falls back every fourth week (periodization).  So, just use the last periodization week workouts prior to the race.  It should be something like an easy pace (zone 1,zone2) run of 3-4 miles 3x week.

Hope that helps.

Wow!  My swim has gone south lately.  We did some surf entry and exits this morning before work to the first buoy which is about 100 yards offshore.  I just feel out-of-breath lately in the water.  I think somewhere along the line my catch has become clipped and my turnover has increased.  Not postive though, but I'm frustrated!!!!  And, to add insult tp injury, the frickin' water temperature has dropped again.  I would estimate it dropped to low 50s again with the current swell.  I'm looking forward to San Diego!

Piece of cake, the swim is only 500 yds for this one.

I'm hoping to make a little swim clinic on Saturday at Tamarack Beach. It's mainly on entry and exits but, hopefully, I'll get a chance to do some swimming too.
