You are a rockstar Tim!  Way to go on finishing that both rides without giving up!

Sandra...nice job with the weight loss on week one!  Keep it up.

Not much happening here still.  Hit the pool last night and had a nice swim.  I forgot how much I enjoy it.

Any plans for the weekend?  I am home with the boys today but no plans.  We have a sitter tomorrow night for the kids but nothing decided yet.  I know we will go out for dinner.  Any good movies out?  We also need to open the pool this weekend.

No big plans here... Weather is supposed to take a turn for the worst, but I need to get a long run in, 18-20k. I have a half marathon in 2 weeks after all! haha. I'll also go for a ride and swim with my club. But no non-training plans.

Got word last night that I may be able to move in to my new apartment a full month early, which woudl be AMAZING. I don't mind where i live now, but I can't wait to get into my new place and settle down. I'll have to buy a whole bunch of stuff earlier than planned, though!

I am FINALLY DONE with this semester!  Ugh, I thought it would never end!  Now, I just have an interview today for a scholarship, so keep your fingers crossed for me!

I also have another doctor's appointment for my knee on Tuesday!  We'll see how that goes.  I'm going to ask if there are any alternatives to just resting it, like PT or a chiro.  It hurts pretty often, so I need to get that checked out.

On that note, I sold my HIM bib because I just don't think I can build up to it in time after the last couple weeks off.  I had something else going on that prevented me from biking, so I've pretty much done nothing but walk the dog as often as I can!  So I'm going to the Door County sprint instead, which is the day before the HIM, that way at least Ryan and I can watch each other race.  I'm feeling good about my decision, too, because it'll let me build up to an Oly hopefully in August!

Sandra - I am also back on the losing weight bandwagon!  I just started tracking my calories again this week.  Keep us all posted on how it's going!

T1 - You rock.  I could have NEVER done that bike ride.  Un-freakin'-believable!  I am super proud of you pushing through like that!  Now, I have no excuse for quitting anything!

For this weekend, Ryan and I are going to a Brewers tailgate and game tonight, then no plans the rest of the weekend besides signing our new lease!  And lots of walks, since that's all I can do!

Are you are willing to try alternative medicine, have you thought about acupuncture?  I have two badly degenerated discs in my lower back.  Six years ago I was told my only option was a double disc replacement.  We were not even married yet and I was told there was no guarantee I could carry babies to term after the surgery so I opted to try everything to keep me out of surgery.  I did acupuncture and felt 90% better after just one time.  I only go a few times a year now but I will keep it up if it keeps me on my feet and off the table!

Hey all! Sounds like everyone is busy, busy!  Me too! Did a 5K last weekend and have my Girls on the Run 5K this weekend. Super excited about that one because when those girls cross the finish line it is awesome for them!!  So lucky I get to be a part of it.  I signed up for another 5K June 4 and June 11!

Still continuing with my current run 3x a week and body step 1x a week, at least until school is out...then who knows, I may switch it up a bit. Running is getting harder for me. I know it is good that I am still doing it, but I hate that i am so slow. Oh well.

We are super busy the next few weekends!  I turned my portfolio in this week and cannot be happier about it! Just a 4 day summer class and I am done with my School Admin. masters! We are celebrating my daughters birthday this weekend and family is in town and then next weekend is my sisters wedding!!!  So fun, but craziness all next week!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

I'm hoping to maybe actually get some lazy time this weekend, but I know that is probably just a dream.  Tomorrow, plans are up in the air until we hear from the delivery guy and he gives us a 3 hour window of when he will be delivering our daughters new bed(she's so excited). After which we will have to get out all her new bedding.  My husband is doing a long ride in the morning and at some point we have to go out and return the drapery we bought last weekend, because it just isn't going to work, so the hunt continues.

Sunday, I'll be doing a 12-18KM run depending on how I feel, in the morning and then I'm doing a 2 hr. TRX workshop with my daughter, to learn proper form and feel more comfortable when we start doing the classes next week.

Meggan, I'm not sure what the new movies are this weekend.  I don't think there is anything noteworthy coming out.  I know my husband wants to go see Thor, but that was released last week.

Erica, really glad you mad the choice to see a doctor and also explore more active recovery.  I find it helps to have a doctor/physio/chiro, etc. that is also a runner/swimmer/biker, they will tend to give you more options for active recovery than those that don't.  Your choice to delay your HIM until you can train properly for it, is also a good one.  Also, yeah on the semester being over and I'll be crossing my fingers for your interview today!

Pete, good luck with your run this weekend, and congrats on the new place, moving is hectic and somewhat stressful, but I love setting up a new home:-)

Debbie, you are doing great and don't get down on yourself for running a little slower, you are carrying a future runner!

Tim, I have to say it again, well done on that ride last weekend, our leader, demonstrating strength above and beyond and setting the bar at a new level.  I know I will think of you when I feel challenged and use it to help me keep going, and keep pushing through to the end.

I think everyone of you is inspirational, leading busy lives, making smart choices, challenging yourselves, fitting in training and races and asking for support when life takes you off track!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Do you think I could run a decent HM on three days a week running?  Now that I have added back in other workouts, I don't want to run more than 3 times a week.  I have a half the end of August and I fully intend on running it.

Yes!  I definitely think you can.  When I was running back in the fall, I was only running 2x/week, and I could comfortably run 9-10 miles at a time.  I think 3x, even though it's not ideal for a running race, is fine, especially with your running experience.

Hal Higdon has a 4x/week running plan, and I think you could modify it to 3x easily.

Is a bike helmet like a carseat?  If you have carseats in your car and you get in an accident, you are told to replace them even if they seem fine.  They can still be compromised and not keep your child safe in another accident.  I feel tonight and hit my head on the street.  Helmet seems fine but do I get a new one?

Yes, they are like carseats, if you fell and hit your head with it, you should replace it.  Better safe than sorry!

Hope the rest of you is okay and the helmet was your ownly concern.

I am responding to Sandra's comment and believe it was 50% stupidity and 50% mental strength!   I thank you all for your support and inspiration.  You may not realize it but I used you all as inspiration to keep going.  I knew I couldn't come back on here and say I gave up.

corstan - 2011-05 11 11:17 AM

you really are having a time of it with the biking right now Tim, but it doesn't seem to be stopping you, which is either a great show of mental strength of stupidity:p...I'm going to go with Mental Strength!

Sandra, congrats on the early weight loss.  How is the new house coming along?

Debbie, good work on keeping up the running.  Slower is better than not at all!

Meggan, glad to see you back in the water and enjoying the swimming.  It's good when you rediscover some of the fun in your training.  How was the weekend?  Make it to dinner and the movie?  And sorry about the crash, hope you are ok.  And yes, I would replace the helmet.  Oh, and yes, you could definitely do a HM on 3 runs a week.  I did mine with the plan of doing 3 runs a week and really only did about 2.

Pete, how is the running going?  You ready for that HM?  You are a fit guy so I think 13mi is still very doable for you.  And do that sprint.  Some of the best races (and fastest times) I have ever done were when I entered them just for fun.  I was a lot more relaxed and just enjoyed the race and the experience.

Erica, wahoo for school being over!  Sorry the knee is still acting up and I think it was a good decision to skip the HIM.  Let us know how things go with the doc tomorrow.

Happy Monday!

Running hasn't been going all that well, but like you said, it should still be very doable. I may turn this into a fun run, too, much like the sprint. I'm 99% going to do the sprint. Just have to actually sign up for it, and figure out who from my club is doing it. I will 100% go at least to show my support!

So yesterday, I did my first wetsuit-aided swim, and holy crap, what a difference it makes! I was much faster (likely putting in more effort, but not 10s/100 on my normal 1:40/100, that's fro sure), and WAY more buoyant. Pretty unbelievable. I found, however, that I was probably fighting the suit more than I would like. My shoulders got rather tired pretty quick. I think I have to get much more experience swimming in the suit before I am really comfortable in it. Also, if you haven't swam in one, make sure that the velcro is covered! I almost had a major problem before I fixed it. Man that stuff is scratchy!

Hope everyone is doing well!

Pete, one little tip on the wetsuit.  If you've heard this before then just ignore me!  Make sure and pull the wetsuit up as much as possible on your body.  You want it pulled up tight between your legs and your torso so that any little excess space is up by your shoulders.  This gives your shoulders more room to move around and keeps them from tiring out as quickly.

Isn't it amazing how much of a difference they make!?

I have heard that before, but I didn't heed the advice. Next time, which will possibly actually be tomorrow morning!

It was absolutely incredible how big of a difference it made. I felt like I was just gliding through the water, and going fast while doing it! Now to actually get better at swimming! Ha

Had our Girls on the Run Race yesterday! Weather was cruddy and cold and misty. The girls got to pick who they wanted to run with and our walker picked me! So we walked most of the race, but she was sooooo proud and it was awesome!

That is so awesome Debbie!  The best feelings come from helping or supporting someone else attain their goals!

And on that note, does anyone else have any plans to volunteer at any races this year?  It is a great feeling and highly recommend it.

Wife and I volunteered for a marathon a couple of months ago.  We worked a water station.  It was a lot of fun.  It's hard talking yourself into getting up early for it but once you are up and out there it is a blast.  You get so many thank you's and being able to throw out encouragements and seeing people really appreciate it makes it all worth it.

I've never volunteered at a tri before, so maybe I'll add that to my list.  Without the volunteers these races wouldn't happen.

I am hoping to volunteer at a couple this year, if I am in town for them. Problem is I don't know when I'm going to be in Montreal and when I won't be! But I definitely know how important the volunteers are, and make an effort to thank each and every one, no matter how awful I feel.

I will be, however, be doing a 5k with my mom at the end of the summer. For Mother's Day, I told her I'd buy us both entrance fees to the Toronto 5k, and I'm going to walk it with her. She used to love running when she was working hard at losing weight, but she hasn't done it in a few years. I thought maybe it would be a good way to get her back into both battles.

Pete - I LOVE THAT IDEA!  I tried to get my mom to do a 5k with me, and she backed out.  You will have so much fun with it though.  I'm excited for you!

Went to the doctor again today, and I have another 4 weeks without running.  He also wrote me a prescription for a PT, so I will hopefully start that this week.  I'm looking into other forms of active recovery, too, so if you guys have any other suggestions, I would love to hear them!  Meggan, I did ask him about acupuncture, and he seemed to think it might be a good idea for me, so I am going to look around for someone to do that in this area.

So, it looks like I may not be doing any tri's this summer!  I am looking for aquabikes now.

That's a great thing to do with your Mom Pete!

Erica, this is not good news.  Has your Doctor determined what the cause is?  Is he/she just a general practitioner or are they a specialist of some sort?  Have you gone to get a second opinion from another doctor?

The doctor is an orthopaedic doctor.  No second opinion, besides that my primary care physician said it was probably patellar tendonitis, too, before he referred me to the ortho.  My biggest concern is that he hasn't told me what he thinks the cause is besides over-training.  I'm trying to figure out things with my insurance company now to see a PT, in the hopes that the PT will be able to tell me what it is.  Frustrating!
