Jeff thanks and I found the thread last night about this. I agree with your assessment and I will take your advice and take care of the adjustment this evening.

I posted in response before I read down to the end and saw that you already had your answer....at least I was right!

It's embarrassing to offer wrong advice to someone that already has the right answer.

Thanks for the advice and kind words everyone. I was thinking yesterday, if I just would have done a short spin on my bike to warm up my legs before that trail run I probably would not even have this problem! I have a treadmill in the basement and in this heat it won't bother me in the least to run on it. I do think I have my eye on it early enough to keep it from turning into a major issue.  I also have a chiro close who I can turn to for ART if the weekend doesn't provide much improvement.

I had a much better ride this morning and we are off to the lake with the kids for a boating afternoon so I really have nothing to complain about .

One more note, I just found out from my mom that while we were on vacation my Dad had to be hospitalized in the ICU with pneumonia. He was in ICU for 8 days but is home now. He is on oxygen at night and will continue that for 2 weeks. My parents have this habit of not wanting us (my sisters and I) to worry so we never find out what is going on until the last minute. Dad has fought through cancer, quadruple bypass surgery, and an aneurysm but his lungs give him the most trouble in recent years. He was a long time smoker and now it is very obviously catching up to him. Any prayers would be very much appreciated.

Dina your Dad will be in my thoughts and prayers as well and hope he is feeling better and has a quick recovery. Glad to hear you are feeling better as well.

Jeff thanks and no worries it is always good to get confirmation from you guys on those types of things.

Just got back from my lunch time run. It was 92 degress out there and all I could manage was 5 miles. I was trying to beat the thunderstorms that are supposed to be heading in this afternoon. I really need to lobby my wife for a treadmill or a gym membership. All sponsors would be welcome Smile

Good job running in that heat Tony.  5 miles is a lot to "manage" at 92.  We're getting a heat wave too.  I rode this morning before the heat really kicked in, thought it was 82 when I finished, and I'm planning to run tonight after it cools at least a tad.

Dina, your dad is added to the prayer list.  Sounds like he's had quite a ride, and I hope he learns to lean on those who love him more.  It's really a blessing to be able to give back to your parents.

I'm off to the races!  I'm not sure if I will be posting this weekend since Lis and I are camping for the weekend.  I'll try to post to facebook but I don't know what I'll do beyond that because posting on BT is thoroughly a pain on my phone.

Pneumonia is the worst pain I have ever felt while sick.....and I was healthy!  Prayers and healing blessings for your Dad.

I'm going to be a downer - having a crappy training week. I upset my back last week while we were at the Magic Kingdom by holding up my children so they could see the lights fantastic parade. They are much too heavy for me but what is a parent going to do right? It took a few days and I did only easy workouts, we were traveling back home then anyway so no major set back. The back feels fine now.

Then on Wednesday when we got home (after riding in the van for 2 days) I hit my favorite trail for a run. It was awful, my legs felt horrible, it was 94 degrees and humid, no air on the trail. It was really just rotten. I woke up yesterday with a tight/sore spot in my achilles.  I'm just feeling very frustrated. I have two races I would like to do, one a 5k on the trail I run on all the time tomorrow. The other a sprint tri next weekend. I'll probably skip the trail run tomorrow as the achilles still hurts today and the tri is more important to me. I'm not sure how to move forward with this little issue though.

Should I try running on it a little, aqua jog, no running until it feels better? I road my bike yesterday (which was another really awful workout in 90 degree heat and swirling winds), just tried to pick a route with no hills and maintain a fast cadence instead of working the higher gears. It seemed to be fine but I really wanted to get back home and do some speedwork and intervals on the bike before the tri next weekend.

I'm also back to having headaches now that we are home. I did not have one headache the whole time we were in Florida. It was so nice.

Just call me Debbie Downer.

Dina, you are always so positive, but don't be afraid to share when you are having a rough time.  That's what we're here for.  I hope you feel better soon.  You'll be back to your old self in no time.

Dina - I've added your Dad to my prayer list. My parents are the same way with keeping health issues from us kids.

Dirk - I'll look for you tonight at packet pick up and if I don't catch you then I'll see you tomorrow. I wrote down your race number (and Allison's) so I'll go to your bike rack and stay there until I see you. I'm not letting another race go by missing meeting up with Junkies!

Quick bike question that I feel really dumb asking, but with my bike issues last week I just want to know.....What psi do I pump my tires to on race morning? To preface, all the races I've been in around here have the local bike shop be there race morning and I've always had them pump up my tires. Last week was the first race I was in that I pumped up my own. My tires say 120psi so is that the optimal pressure? FYI, race temps will be between high 60s and mid 70s tomorrow. Any help would be appreciated.

I know Jonathan's doing his ride for charity and I hope he has good weather and safety. May the rest of you have a wonderful weekend as well.

Brenda, what brand/model are your tires?

Ok, more info.  It depends on your weight.  The maximum is the maximum beyond which there will be safety concerns (either the rim bead could be damaged or the tire can spontaneously blow off the rim).  The minimum is the lowest you should go because below that creates a relatively high risk that you will get pinch flats (where the tire bead pinches the tube against the rim because the pressure is low enough that the tire bead can move around as you roll).

The actual optimum pressure is based on your actual weight.  I think most tire manufacturers publish a table for you to follow.  That pressure will be the one that provides you with the best rolling resistance.

On unusually smooth surfaces I will go 10lbs higher (subject to the max limit) and on unusually rough pavement I will go 10lbs lower (subject to the minimum).

To drown you in information...If you are on a road bike, the front tire can be a few lbs lower (no more than 5).  On a tri bike, there is nearly as much weight on the front wheel as the rear so both pressures will be the same.

If the roads are wet, or it might rain, go 5psi lower than the chart for better traction.

So as an example:  If you were using Zipp Tangente Clinchers and I just happened to guess your weight properly, you would use 112 psi in the front and 116psi in the rear on a road bike...or 116psi in both if it's a tri bike.

If it's raining then 111psi in both (tri bike)

If the roads are very rough pavement, where you feel a lot of vibration and jarring...102-105 in the front and 106-110 in the rear (for a road bike).

(this is per Zipp's pressure chart on their web site)

It looks like Continental hasn't gone the extra mile and recommended varying tire pressures for different weights.  They simply recommend 110psi on that tire for all uses.

I suggest you use the chart I linked to on the Michelin site for the basic tire pressure then use the variables I mentioned from that set point based on conditions.

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH, Jeff! (Did you see all caps makes me REALLY thankful for your info)! I never knew all this and boy, did I overinflate my tires by 30 psi in last weeks race. No wonder my bike was a disaster. I'm so ignorant - I thought you just inflated the tires to what it says on the sidewall. Thanks, again, Jeff! You're the best!!

err... behind on posts once again!  So sorry to hear about the troubles going on with some of you!

In my world, I haven't really been doing much working out, it's mostly mental though.  It's just been so darn hot here that I have not been up to doing anything. (That and I think part of it is I don't have a specific target race...) I'm hoping to redeem myself next week.

BUT, there is good news as well, non-tri related.  I mentioned before that I'm working on a nonprofit.  Well, I nominated my friend (working on it with her) for a contest sponsored by Chrysler and USA Basketball, and she's a finalist!  So a production crew flew out from California to Detroit to film us, and the video just came out today.  I think it's cool, if I do say so myself! Laughing The way it's put together, especially the weaving in and out of images alternating us with NBA players I thought was ultra cool. Laughing  But anyway, most importantly, the winner of this contest gets $20,000 towards a nonprofit.  Part of it is facebook voting.  So I would so so soooo appreciate it if you guys could vote and share the message!!!

Here's a post talking more about the contest itself: http://atlanticimpact.org/2012/06/finalist-of-chrysler-and-usa-basketball-sponsored-contest/

And here is where to view the video and vote (once a day, everyday June 22-29 ) the Detroit video: https://www.facebook.com/jeep/app_339188606141882

You can see who I am in the video Laughing

Thanks!!!

Good luck racers.  Can't wait to hear the reports and its awesome to see Junkies meeting up.

I also love seeing so many of us doing things for others.  Another vote Samantha, great story.  And Jonathan is doing a 150 mile MS ride this weekend.

Now I have a little challenge to add.  I have a cousin who is sort of my adopted daughter.  She has a special place in my heart and we've had a very special connection ever since she was born.  She's been a little bit of a black sheep but has a good heart and is really working hard lately to get on track.  She's only 28 and is very healthy - she was a soccer player through college and now works as a personal trainer.

Yesterday morning, she had a seizure (first ever) and after getting to the hospital in Boston and undergoing tests, they found a ping pong size tumor in her brain.  I had a talk with the surgeon, and he strongly believes it's nothing "serious" (i.e. cancer), it's in a great place given that it's in the brain, and they'll remove it once the swelling goes down some.  The plan is to do it Tuesday.  Please add her to your prayers.  I need to bike for a while.
