Trail race in the books.

Way to go!!! Glad to hear you stayed on your feet the whole time. I did actually say a prayer for you.

You definitely earned a cookie (or four) Yummy. :=)

x2!  That sounds like a pretty great time, even with the, um, detours.

Anyway, run was slow, I walked a lot of hills, I didn't fall (I saw three people face plant), weather was tolerable (19F start), clothing was correct, I was slow, I run downhill way slower than most people and the race was a total blast.  I'm pretty sure if I ever run something longer than a HM it will be on the trail.  No results in yet, but at least I finished with other people who sort of looked like runners, so I'll take it.  Oh, almost forgot, piping hot coffee and homemade oatmeal/raisin and macadamia nut/white chocolate cookies at the finish.  Total win.

Nice job.  And great finishing food.  I always try and do trail races when I can, they are so much fun and generally a different vibe then road races

Trail race in the books.  The entire field (in the 8 miler) missed the first turn.  It was awesome.  The wrong way was straight up hill.  How does that even happen?  You had to walk this big arse hill because the trail was narrow and everyone else was walking it.  We all got to the top and sort of figured out something was amiss.

I literally ran down the hill about 200m and ran back up 3 times.  The group think was awesome - I had one women YELL at me that we needed to keep going the way we were because SHE HAD DONE THIS RACE FOUR YEARS IN A ROW.  She was WRONG.  Finally, we just ran down and it became clear we missed a turn.  My fast buddy (who I had a side bet with) made a quick and correct decision to head downhill to the turn -- he got 3rd OA.  I should have just followed his lead, but I didn't want to run way down and then back up.

Someone want to log in to TrainerRoad as me and ride stage 9 for me?  I don't seem to be capable of getting of the couch.  My hip flexors are taking a beating with all this biking that's for sure.  I stretch them often so I can really tell the toll this week has taken on top of the general fatigue the stages have brought.  Walking around Flagstaff yesterday was interesting, although eventually I loosened up and could walk more normal

Well done, Marsh Goose! I mean, you did have the perfect run-up TO the race, so we knew it was going to be a blast and hey, there were still COOKIES LEFT when you got to the finish, that officially means you are a good runner.

I am looking for a good tire recommendation for a very casual rider.  I pretty much wore Tina's tire down and if she ever goes out on the road again I need to get her a new tire.  But, this tire also has to do ok on trainer since I have expensive tires there is no way I'm using mine for the trainer.  I steal her rear wheel and use that on the trainer.  I am wondering how well Gatorskins hold up on the trainer?  I like the idea of a nice puncture resistant tire for her on that cold day in hell she bikes without me since I seem incapable of teaching her how to change a tube.  She stops paying attention when she realizes she has to take the wheel off the bike...

I haven't, but I've read of several people doing this with no problems.  It seems they hold up pretty well.

I have biked my way out of Sufferlandria.  My legs are still shaking.  9 straight days of intense trainer rides.  I do not recommend it.   I'm glad I didn't give up on it though (although I had to talk myself into staying on the bike for the last 20mins).  Time to bring back the run

Really dumb

I decided to get up and do my long bike ride in the early morning. I bundled up Florida style (I think it was 30F) and took off. I felt pretty ok until mile 9 and then I noticed my feet were getting kind of cold. Two miles later and I was in agony. I took my bike shoes off and tried rubbing them. It didn't help much. I tried to solder on for another mile or two, but then I decided that it was time to accept my poor judgement call and head home.

On the way back there was a slight cold head wind. This succeeded in freezing most of the rest of me so that when I got home I was a total mess.

After soaking my feet in warm water and taking a hot shower, I was still shivering a bit.  I never never never want to ride with frozen feet ever again. horrible!

Thawed out now but tired. I think I had my shoulder tensed from the freeze pain.

Making me consider my clothing for the March HIM. The lake temp will be around 60 and after a half hour swim at around 8 a.m. the weather has the potential to be warm or chilly. I have no idea what to wear.

Bundled up FL style.  Not sure what that means.   Did you have socks and toe covers on?  I'd probably be in both, but at least one or the other.  If the sun was shinning I'd still be in shorts but odds are I would have something over my ears and probably my wind resistant coat on and full fingered gloves that are wind proof.

Nice job! That is not easy to do.

And for the tire, I've also heard of Gatorskins doing well on the trainer, but no personal experience with it. Did you get a KK as well? Can't remember for sure. Those would seem to be nicer to tires with the smoother surface. Some older road tires of mine lasted longer than expected before I finally got the trainer tire.

90 min run this morning with lots of sun and snow covered everything. Got back inside and could not see anything. Turned on the lights ... and still could not see a thing. Could hardly see that some of the bulbs were even on looking directly at them. Gotta love these days.

Yeah, got the KK.  I've had good luck with a regular road tire on the trainer as well.  Mine got ruined due to unusual circumstances.  I've never seen a Gator tire up close, didn't know it wasn't smooth.

Kim, I've got Armadillos -similar to Gatorskins - on right now. They're not the fastest tire around but seem to be very puncture resistant and hold up fine on the trainer. I put them on last fall when the roads were crappy and have kept them on inside. They're not smooth though, more of a commuting tire.

Oh, I meant the trainer surface with the "smooth" part, sorry. The Gatorskins are in the middle, but mine have slight treading on the outer part.

Fred D - 2013-02-03 12:16 PM Question for the group?? What angle do you have your saddle at on your tri bike? Ie; how much downward does it typically point or is it perfectly horizontal?

Horizontal to slight up, depending on which saddle I've used. *Very* slight down may work ok for some, but generally it's more likely the fit is off or it's the wrong saddle when it has to go down.

Have you been using this one long? It took me at least a few weeks to get used to an Adamo enough that I had it leveled, for example.

I have a Cobb saddle and it is perfectly horizontal within about 1-2 mm depending on how exactly I measure it.

I only ride Gatorskins. I dont ride the trainer more than 2 times per year, LOL but they have been great out on the roads and are very thorn resistant!
