Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats on all the swimming progress Gary!!!!!! Swim update from me. My shoulder is acting up (rotator cuff) so I'm working on the non-stroke elements. Kicking drills and body alignment. My kick has gotten so much better. I had a weak kick that was all over the place. Since I started working on that, my body position has gotten better. Yay! Whenever the pain subsides, I'll go back to working on the stroke and try putting it all together. But for now, one thing at a time. I have plenty to work on while my shoulder recovers. PT is working wonders. I've learned so much about how my body mechanics works. The issues I have were a lifetime in the making. But now I understand what caused them. I'm actually glad this happened. By addressing it now, I'll have better function when I get older. Otherwise I was heading for real trouble. Funny how things work out right? Blessing in disguise. I never respected my body as much as I do now. What an incredible design. What an amazing field PT is. In many cases no meds needed. Just stretch and strengthen and you get better. Working within your design and mechanical structure. Incredible. My PT loves me. I'm so excited every time I learn something new that she says it makes her work gratifying. Glad to be of service. ![]() Keep up the great work everybody! I'm over here cheering for you!!! GO TURTLES GO!!! |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ooops, sorry. Fixed it. Well after the race yesterday I felt pretty good. 6 miles no knee pain and lots of enery left. My running buddies are doing the San Antonio RnR and I am working on may be doing the 1/2 there. Will see. Edited by GaryRM 2009-05-16 9:50 PM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks Bryan. I decided not to keep track of pace. I find it too discouraging. So I'm training for time. Hopefully DH and I will swim tonight. Depends on how the day goes. We're both really swamped at work. In this economy, that's a good thing. ![]() |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You are definitely right....in this economy it is critical to be busy. No issues at all about the distance - I just wondered if you tracked it....keep up the good work..... Where is everybody???? |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey LRR, I am here!!! Looks like there is a mini-Tri June 6 (75m/9.5/2) that I think I can swing with Ms GaryRM. A running buddy who did the Barathon will do this with me as his first Tri. If I make it should be a blast! Also, I want to race a certain race in September. Cajunman (800m/20m/5k). Evidently this is an "A" race for all of the Sprint types and brings in a lot of Texas folks also. Registration goes quick for 400 spots. Checked 2007 results (2008 was cancelled due to hurricane) and swim/run I will be MOP for my age group which is fine. But the biking, these dudes are fast! I have to avg 21-22mph just to be MOP! 24-25 mph to hang with the leaders. A 18.6mph avg would land me in last place in my AG. That's with 10 (90 degree) turns! Now before anyone thinks I am whining, nope. To me this is a call to arms!!!! I have until Sept to avg 22mph over 20miles. This is now my "A" race for the year (assuming I get in). All else is the lead up to this race. |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Gary - go for it....Cajunman it is....is it in BR or NO or elsewhere? As far as the avg speed , I have often found some online programs are off in their calculation or if the course distance was off a little, it would make a big difference too so don't sweat it too much.....that said.....why would you want to spend more time out there than absolutely necessary.....I say - go for it.....just be sure you keep enough in the legs for the run go Gary go sTRIve |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey all, Sorry about all of the posts but I thought I would nag you all until everyone came back! Just kidding. Received my TI book yesterday, started reading expecting to read about how I was swimming all wrong. Even the first 20 pages of the book talked about how we learned it all wrong. Except since I never really learned to swim I only know one way, which is the way my Coach has been teaching me. Well turns out the book was a bit of a bust because pretty much I was taught what the book stated (now whether I am actually doing it correct may be a completely different matter). Swim on my side, yep, rotate hips (starting the rotate from the hips), streamline, yep, balance yep. The only real difference so far is the book says push the buoy. Coach says pull your belly button thru your back. Somewhat of the same thing. Even the stroke, coach says like climbing a ladder. Similar sentence in the book. Just started reading about hands stay still and stick. Will have to ask Coach about her impression of the TI stuff. It may be where she got some of her training. Got 26 miles in on the bike, distance PR for me. Found some plans to build a bike rack for the back of the truck. Will probably build that tomorrow. Should hold three bikes, best thing is you can unmount it and put it on the ground and instant 3 bike stand for the garage. |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Gary - I really like the 3 bike mount rack idea. Can you tell me where you found it? Here's the concept of one I recently saw in the back of a pickup...a sheet of plywood fully carpeted front and back - cut to fit p/u bed. Three front fork locks mounted at the front of the plywood with three false forks mounted in between bikes to hold the wheels. What was cool was there were two handles mounted on the plywood near the tailgate so you just slid out the whole board and left it tipped against the tailgate to remove bikes and mount front wheels easily. If you can't understand some of this just let me know. It was on a pickup with a camper shell so it kept the guy from climbing into the camper but it would also fit in a p/u bed so you wouldn't have to climb up into the p/u. TI - sounds like you are on the right track already but hopefully you get one or two good ideas from the book. Sometimes hearing stuff from a different source or hearing it put a different way can be the breakthrough moment. Also, I would HIGHLY recommend learning to float on your back as TI teaches. You can totally balance your body by beginning the move to your side from you back....let me know if you want more of TI stuff....I am a big TI guy....but only because I went to the clinic...the book didn't do that much for me....even though I went to the clinic if I did it over I would hire a TI coach and take a few lessons and I think you would get the same thing. sTRIve.....CapTexTri on Monday..... |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() link for rack: http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/bikerack/makerack.htm Floating on my back is the one thing I have always been able to do. For some reason it is very easy for me to do it. Let me finish the book and see what I think. Will let you know. Thanks, |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() CapTexTri done today....Olympic distance....three thousand did either Oly, Sprint or MyFirstTri. This year's time was 15 seconds faster than last years with light training. I really felt undertrained going into this one but I got through it. I pr'd the swim, rode almost the same ride as last year (even with a course change with a couple of short but very steep hills) and then a warming run. It was about 85 degrees when we finished so much cooler than last year and much less humid. I feel very good right now. A little sleepy from the 4am wakeup but okay regardless. Getting ready to run an errand at Lowe's and then grab some dinner. RR coming.... sTRIve Edited by left.right.repeat 2009-05-25 4:54 PM |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats LRR!!!! Looking forward to the RR. My attempt to move the bar end shifters to the aero bars failed. The shifter cable guide (?) was too short so put it back and wrapped the aero bars with new carbon tape. Man what a huge difference!! Really makes the ride nicer. Did 11 tonight on the bike, flying around corners (well going as fast as I dared) felt like a pro racer. Even did a flying dismount! (and didn't crash!). LOL, I am a hoot when I get myself wound up! Anyways, Lady is off to the shop this week as the bike mechanic wanted her back in after 300 miles for a check up. Will probably pay him to move the shifters. Another Question from Gary to you bike experts: I bought most of the parts for my bike, Ultegra, dura ace, 105, all good quality stuff. I let my bike mechanic get the front deraileur and he put on a Shimano Sora. I could easily pick up an Ultegra for $30 but I can't justify it. Would it really make any difference except for my vainity? Edited by GaryRM 2009-05-25 9:34 PM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi! I'm here LRR. Just not as much as I used to be. Things are really busy at work and really busy at home. Both going great. Training is coming along, just not as structured or a strict as when I was single and before I made partner. According to Mav's log, she's got her hands full with her parents. And Diane is injured. Not sure about Dan and Leston. I haven't checked their logs in a while. Great work Gary!! You'll totally ace your minitri! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ... I'm baaaaaaack ... Hey gang, Ages since I last logged in to the forum. Absence does though make the heart grow fonder so I will try and remain active and engaged. As I wrote in a recent email to our fearless leader Bryan, I just seem to have fallen out of the habit both of training and of posting. I am going to try and catch up on the goings on over the past few weeks and months by reading back through the posts later. For the moment though, just wanted tolet y'all know that I am alive and trying hard to get back in the groove. FBP |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've read back through the posts since last I was atthe site. Well done everybody on the various races that have been completed. Congrats B-man on the graduation of your daughter. Sorry to read about some of the injuries, "training interuptions due to life incursions" and the defection of one of our number to another group. It's been a decent week or so of activity for me. I got ou on my road bike "Sebastian" for a first long-ish ride on Saturday. We did just over 30k and while I felt good and could've kept going I didn't want to be crippled on Sunday. I've run 2 or 3 times in the last week, 3 or 4 swims and I've been commuting by bike for the past couple of weeks. So all-in-all I've stepped up the activity level. This weekend I have a trip to Toronto for meetings of the Canadian Diabetes Association board. I'm heading up a day early so that I can connect with my friend Myra, the blind lady that I will be guiding in a sprint triathlon in July. We're going to practice biking on her tandem road bike and then we're going to head to the U of T pool for a session. The swim is the part that I am most worried about so it'll be great to have some time to figure out exactly how we will partner for this part of the event - a tether or voice commands or ?? Best of luck B-man in the Tour de Cure this weekend. Diabetes is epidemic in North America and events such as the TdC are important both for the funds that they raise as well as for the positive lifestyle that they demonstrate. Sadly, most N. Americans don't realize that they can reduce their risks for Type 2 diabetes through very modest changes in exercise and diet. FBP |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Freddy!! Glad you are back and the training is in gear! Let us know how you figure out the swim portion. It's great what you are doing! Another distance PR swimming today, 600 meters! Could have kept going but my form was just starting to fall apart. Once I hit 350 meters I fell into a routine. Around 550 started finding my strokes weren't as clean. Took a cue from the TI book, stopped at 600, rested a second and started again. Did 200 more than called it a day. Don't know how long it took and don't really care. Distance than speed. I think I am going to change my workouts to 2 days/wk with Masters Class and one day on my own. No pressure just swimming distances. I need 900 meters continuous by Sept (my "A" race is 800meters and giving myself an extra 100 due to push off on walls). |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bryan or anyone else, have you done the Austin HIM? Considering a HIM for next year. Not really sure I want to do the NOLA (water issue, humidity, heard the bike course was windy, etc) as my first. I can't travel far and Austin would be close enough. My only concern is that the run course sounds hilly. |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Gary - you have your swim dialled in. You will SO be ready by September -- no worries. You could be ready in a couple of weeks if you really needed to be. Great idea on stopping -- when the form breaks down - STOP. DO NOT PRACTICE STRUGGLE. We all know how to do that. As far as the Longhorn 70.3 (Austin HIM) - it was my first HIM last year. It was HOT. About 95 by the time I finished. But it is a great race. Very well run. I don't think there are any "easy" HIMs so go for it. I was doing it as a "I just want to finish" race and I am glad I did not really have any time goals. It is a tough course. Bring your hill game....for the ride and the run. My race report is buried in here somewhere so you can find all the dirty details. I was DONE at the end and my buddy ended up in medical with an IV. I probably should have had one too. I lost 9 pounds....TOO MUCH. I was really more dehydrated than I knew. I have heard they are taking the last two hills out of the ride. There were two HUGE hills that you did right before transition....there were people laying in the grass before riding up the hills as well as people walking their bikes up. A lot of walking on the run, part is in the park on dirt part on roads. Not much flat on the bike or run. On the run, there is one hill they call Quadzilla...I did not even TRY to run it. Now that I read this I don't know how I had so much fun. It is a great race and I would do it again this year except it is too close to IMAZ. I am going to do the PrairieMan HIM in Dallas in September. I am thinking about doing the aquabike or the relay (I swim and ride and let someone else run the 13.1 at Longhorn.....any takers????). FBP - Thought of you often yesterday and today as I rode in your honor. (I also had my coin). It was a beautiful 52 miles yesterday and about 30 today at the Tour de Cure. The riders raised $510,000 this year for diabetes research. If there is a TdC in your area, I highly recommend the ride. The minimum fundraising amount is less than the MS150 and this ride was GREAT. The weather was awesome....I finished both rides in the 80-85 degree range.....It has been in the 90s everyday so it was nice to get some cool weather at least in the morning. It heated up a lot yesterday afternoon and today but I was finished this morning about 9 so I didn't have much heat. Mav.....knock knock.....anyboday home? sTRIve |

![]() | ![]() Hi fellow turtles!!! I'm still here...busy helping my Dad recover from surgery and finishing up training for my HIM...which by the way, I feel ill prepared for!!!! I will do the race and I will not finish last or throw up!!!!Some goals never change over time. HEY PETE!!! We missed your smiling face ![]() ![]() Bryan ...so glad you did that ride...seems like it was fun ![]() Gary your improvements are amazing!!!! Next weekend I am doing a HIM relay as the swimmer( I bet you are all shocked). Its in NH and we rented a house with the rest of our BT relay team. It will be a much needed break for me. Very stressful couple of weeks. I need to have some down time ![]() ![]() |
![]() ![]() |
Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Here's some more on the Tour de Cure 2009.... A beautiful two days of riding in Texas. The weather was just about perfect yesterday and today. Not much wind. High 60s overnight, in the low 70s at the start and finishing each day between 80-85 degrees. Don't get me wrong, it was well into the 90s yesterday afternoon at the party/lunch but I was off the roads and out of the direct sun. This was one very well done ride. A tip of the helmet to the organizing crew. They all did a great job. One of the best marked courses I have ever ridden. Many rest areas, very well stocked. Great volunteers - they even cheered as you finished. As you probably know, this is a charity ride for diabetes and we have a good friend in Canada who is diabetic and one of my spin instructors is diabetic as well. I was thrilled to ride with my spin instructor and her husband yesterday....maybe next year FBP can come down too. I will definitely do the ride again next year. We are very fortunate to have the hill country to ride through on a regular basis. From San Antonio to Austin is some great riding on lightly traffic'd roads for the most part. The organizers did a great job finding us some great roads to ride on both days. Overnight is in San Marcos at Texas State....we grabbed a hotel room as my dorm days are fond memories and that is where I am trying to keep them. Got to have dinner with mom instead of the dinner party associated with the ride so that was great too. Tomorrow starts week 2 of the Ironman Arizona training plan. The journey continues. See you at the finish line. |
