jgerbodegrant - 2010-07-22 10:44 PM Let's get this straight....Contador is still a DB.

I haven't been keeping up on TdF enough.  I have about 5 stages to watch on the dvr and today might be a decent day to do some catching up.  I have to clean carpets today and then maybe sit down and start catching up.  The last stage I saw was when Renshaw got DQ'd, so don't throw any spoilers out just yet.

Dude, hopefully your DVR got the end of all the stages....because I didn't record with continuous time and it cut one of the stages....a really good one....off with less than a km to go!  I spent the next hour trying to find it on youtube etc to no avail.  It's been a very eventful tour.  Hurry up and watch it!

Nope it did cut off the final of stage 11 (Renshaw DQ) but I corrected it immediately after that happened.  I watched the finish on youtube.  That was a crazy finish!  I was pretty upset I missed it but I am glad I could see it later.  I still don't understand the ruling tho.  What was he DQ'd for?  the head butts or trying to take the second rider off his line?

FYI...I always set my DVR to record the 1 hour after the scheduled TdF just in case.

Hey all,  been gone for a much needed vacation for the last week and haven't had a chance yet to get caught up - hopefully soon! For all that raced last weekend - great job - I will try and get to the RR's soon.  Good luck to everyone racing this weekend as well!

So, I planned on getting a few days of exercise in while on the road, but again it didn't happen.  Not sure why it is so hard for me to get motivated while on vacation.  The only thing I can think of is I need a very structured time and workout or else I will skip it. Also, our truck broke down 40 miles from the nearest "road" and had to be towed to the closest town (Cody, WY) and was stuck there for a few days (so the stress also may play a role) So back on the wagon - next tri September 11th!

Nope...he got DQ'd for moving off his line after that infraction.  So it was sort of the head butt and then moving off to the left quickly, which is a BIG no no.

dcon - 2010-07-23 7:38 AM I did my second Oly of the year and third ever triathlon last Sunday.   I've been waiting to see the official results before posting anything and they finally got around to posting the results yesterday.   It was a small race and for some reason, they're always slow at getting the results out.    I'll be doing an RR in the next couple of days to share all the details.   The main highlight for me was the swim because I finally had a major breakthrough -- really major.

In my Tri in June I did the swim in 37:23.  I resorted to sidestroke and backstroke to get through it.   This time around I managed to swim the whole thing crawl and everything seemed to click.   My time was 27:22 which put me at 43/132 overall and 8/28 in my age group.   I'm still in shock and wondering if I'll be able to come close to repeating that performance a month from now for my last Tri this year.

The bike course was darned tough (for me at least) and the run was super hot/humid (more in the RR).  I ended up finishing in 3:09:28 --  82/132 overall and 17/28 in my age group.    I'm happy with the results.  I know I have lots of room for improvement in all three disciplines and it is great to see some positive progress.

Congrats on the swim. What a huge improvement! Look forward to reading your RR

David,

What makes a good coach?  What method would you recommend to find one?  I would consider you, but I'm looking for someone local.  What kind of money should I be looking to spend for a coach and what would I get as a service?  Are there different coaching levels?   Should they do comprehensive tests and all that jazz?  I'm looking to get a coach sometime next season to work me through IMLP 2012 and want to know how to do the research so I can find someone I can trust to work with.

Thanks!

Dan, Sounds like a good effort. Nice swim too.  10 minutes improvement is incredible for any discipline.  Sounds like you have been doing some hard work in the pool.

RR is finally up:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=219025

The interesting thing about my swim is that I cannot hit that speed for even 100 meters in a pool.  I'm chalk that up to the wetsuit, buoyancy in the ocean and getting into a constant rhythm with no walls to disturb me.

first thing to do is set a price range you think will work for you. FWIW i think past 200 a month (except for a few select people), you are looking at a very small rate of return. But for all practical purposes lets say 150-250 per month for a good coach. (if you really do want local this may change a bit based on location).

from here, before you ever talk to the coach, you want to come up with a few/lot of things you want out of the coach/relationship. some things (but not limited too) are:

how much contact do you need with them?
weekly or monthly workouts?
do you want them to come train with you? (this will greatly up the cost).
do you want swim coaching (if so you're almost always better off finding a coach wherever and a local swim coach).
do you want the coach to be teaching as you go along, or just give you workouts and leave it at that?

then set out some goals you have with your racing/training for the year, IE where you want the coach to take you.

Now, as you start looking at coaches, things like education, etc, may be important to you, but the two single largest thigns to look at are what and how the coach goes about getting athletes faster. do they have experiance coaching athletes to their goals (vs getting athletes that were already there).

ask to speak with a current or past athlete if you would like, this can help answer some questions.

finally, a phone call or in person meeting will often clear up any questions as to whether or not you guys will mesh up.

what part of the country are you in>?

Haha!  Yeah, I am going for my oly next weekend and I too am approaching it from a "just for fun" standpoint.  But we'll see how that works out too.  If I were a betting man I'd bet.............well , lets just wait and see.

Looking forward to reading the RR.

Just got a super short haircut. I'll have to post before and after pics when I get back home (still visiting my parents). To give you an idea, my hair was pretty long, well past my shoulders, and now it doesn't go past my ears. I'd been growing it for years and it was just driving me crazy with all the swimming (took forever to brush out & dry). Love it! Talk about freedom. It's dry 2 mins after I'm out of the pool.

Changing topics, I now have sympathy for all of you running in humidity. I'm used to Vegas weather. I run at 5:30am when it is 95 degrees (day times temps are around 115 this time of year) and dry as a bone. I always thought, so it's hot, who cares? Well, as they say it's not the heat it's the humidity. I ran today and it was around 80 degrees and I was sweating buckets. I looked at my HR monitor and I wasn't even working that hard but I felt like I was. Humidity sucks, it slows me down. Can't wait to get back to the dry air in Vegas.

It was a modified Olympic...750m swim instead of 1500m.  It's one of the oldest triathlons in existance...and today was the 30th consecutive year the race was held.

I'm pretty darn sore right now...I suppose I'll need to explain my race a couple dozen times at work tomorrow because I'll be limping all over the place.  But we all know that we love telling our tri stories to anyone willing to listen....

I'm in the Northeast.  Portsmouth New Hampshire.  It's roughly an hour North of Boston.

I'm trying to put together a list...but not really sure how much I will need.  Should I really expect to pay 200 a month just to get some set workouts?  Because that sounds expensive.  I was hoping to get someone that will look at my daily logs and be able to provide me with feedback a couple times a week and to do tests with me.  Maybe put together some nutritional information.  I have zero ironman experience, so setting a goal is tough right now as well.

Judging by the RR, I doubt you had that PBJ in T1.  But then we all knew that wasn't going to be happening until hell froze over.

I just signed up for my 2nd tri.  It is the Boulder Sunset Sprint Tri on September 11th.  Should be interesting, both the swim and bike portions are longer than my first tri and it is in the afternoon. Now, I just got to get my a$$ on the bike!

Thanks

Bike course was mainly flat, but had 2 major hills that you had to go over twice on the out and back.  One hill was about a 100 foot ascent, maybe a 5% grade going out, and a 4% grade coming back.  The other hill was about a 150 climb, 7% grade going out, 5% coming back.

I have to say...my power meter training has really paid off.  It's time you joined the club.
