Time seems to be dragging today.  I'm sitting here at work counting hours until vacation.  19 more hours to go....

Tomorrow is a travel day.  It's about eight hours from my place to San Diego.  Always a fun adventure with three kids!  The drive is pretty boring down I-5 through the farms too; its a whole lot of nothing from my place to the grapevine.

Jay are you planning on doing the Palm Springs Half Marathon in February?  My wife did it last year and had a good time.  I'm thinking about doing the Tour d' Palm Springs Century then the half marathon the next day.

BTW, wheres the 126 degrees outside?  I looked up the weaher for 29 Palms.  While it was hot, it wasn't that damn hot!

David, since I will be traveling tomorrow, I want to say good luck and good times this weekend!  I assume your daughter is racing again too, so pass on my best wishes to her also!

Hadn't planned on it, but I'm always down for a 1/2 and the wife likes running races.  Ooh, I'm more interested in the century ride though to be honest!  I don't think I could ride a hundred miles then run 13 the next day though.  I'll have to do one or the other.  LOL, no, thank god it wasn't really that hot today, that's just what the gauge read when I hopped in the truck earlier.  It was probably in the 105-110 range today.

Thanks, I'm afraid I'll need all the luck you can send...  I pretty well screwed up this week, and didn't do much last week either.  Oh well, at least I'll set an Oly baseline that I can beat next time! Sealed  Hopefully it will just translate as well rested...

Yes, my daughter is racing again.  She spent the afternoon practicing transitions in the backyard.  Her swim has really improved, I'm trying to talk her into lining up waaay outside and swimming a little further, but in clean water.  Last time she freaked out a bit with all the contact.  We'll see!

I bet you'll actually be surprised how well you do being good and rested. If there's one thing I learned here in this group it's not to get hung up on a little slacking every once in a while. You've trained hard, you'll be fine.

Good luck everyone racing this weekend!

I've got one more week till Evergreen. I did a quick run last night. While, I think, the new bike and the aero positition has actually given me a little tendonitis in my right knee, (I know, this is REDICULOIUS!!) my left knee was good. The right knee is only a little soar so I don't think it will be a big deal. I did a medium/hard pace run last night. I was happy to set a 7:30 pace including a 3 minute warmup walk. Tonight, I need a recovery run and a swim. Not slackin' allowed for me!

Oh yeah!! and I bought some new bling for my road bike. I'll take some pics when they come!!

Thanks, yeah I'm not really worried, after all I do this for fun. Laughing  The big bummer is my wife's friend just broke her hand this week and so she can't do the tri.  So my wife pulled out too.  Which means I won't be doing the swim portion for her on Saturday.  I was looking forward to that!

sweet, are they round and carbon?

On the bike front, I came accross an older (2003) Cervelo P2K on craigslist this week for $725.  Close to me too, only 15 minutes away.  Unfortunately I don't know enough about my fit yet to actually buy.  It's a 56, which I'm guessing is close, but maybe a touch too big.  I don't want to spend big bucks on a pro fit right now before even having a bike, but I'm not sure how to make sure I buy a bike that can be fit to me.  Any low cost tips out there for approximate sizing of tri bikes?

If he still has the bike next week I may go look at it, but that's doubtful since it seems like a pretty good price (at least in our local crazy bike market around here).

they are round, but not carbon! -it's for the road bike.

Don't skimp on the fit. You don't have to get a retul, but at least go to a reputable shop and get a good fit. Should cost you about $120ish

Check out the tri bike fit calc on competetivecyclist.com.  You take all the measurements yourself, plug it in and voila, it spits out your measurements.  I used it to buy my bike online since it was my first and the bike fits me perfect.

Using a computer like Jay said should get you close for purchasing. However, once you purchase I can't stress enough the importance of a good bike fitter. While it is a little pricey, it will protect you from repetitive stress and associated injuries. I would recommend Cupertino Bike. Costs about 300, but is a complete fit including knee tracking and cleat positioning. Also, they provide a follow up session to make adjustments after you put some hours on the bike.

What's up people? I'm back from my week of vacation in Tahoe. It was gorgeous, relaxing, fun. We partied pretty hard the 4th of July weekend, then did lots of relaxing stuff for the week. I joined the rec center for the week so I was able to get in a couple swims, a couple spin sessions, and a few runs. Tomorrow I'll update the logs.

I'm now 1 week away from the HIM. The weather forecast shows 89 degrees right now for the 18th...hopefully that comes down a bit over the next week!

Another triathlon in the books. This was my first triathlon in the ocean too! The event was a sprint with a 1k swim, 25k bike, and 5k run. No splits or results available yet, but I believe my finish time was roughly 1:23. I was really shooting for sub 1:20, but it just didn't happen. Couple things that cost me time: the run from the ocean to transition was a couple hundred yards through sand; missed my rack spot in T2 and had to back out and move over to the correct aisle; and the run course had a couple of little hills I wasn't expecting. As for my goals, I don't think I hit any PRs. 1k swim plus beach run was roughly 18 minutes, averaged about 22.5 mph on the bike, and ran 20 for the 5k.I'll put up an official race report when the standings are available.

just got home from my first olympic tri!  I did it, and I think I met my basic goals (except for the 9 minute miles, I ended up averaging 9:30, and the last mile was more like 10:30).  I gotta say, the swim was fine, other than swimming significantly off line on the backstretch.  We were dead into the sun, and I was a little fogged up, I just flat out couldn't see the bouy!  The bike was fine, though slow (16.5mph on the ONLY mountain bike in the entire race), and the run was great up until mile 3.  Mile 4 was iffy, mile 5 hurt, and I was DONE.  My mantra for the final mile was, "I can do anything for one mile..."  I made it, but I've never pushed myself physically beyond my abilities like that before.  I was pretty dizzy and had to sit for some time after the finish.  BUT, I ran the whole way and finished!

I don't know my overall time, other than I'm close to 3 hours if not just under.  I'll have to wait till it's posted on the web site to see for sure.

I'll post an official race report in the next day or two.

think I'm going to bed early tonight...

Nice work Tim! That's a QUICK 5k! I know you do lots of training in the ocean but what did you think of racing in the ocean?

My gf's friend did this race for her first tri ever and I'm pretty anxious to hear how she did.

I think the ocean swim really played to my strengths. I grew up surfing; so, I feel pretty comfortable in the ocean and have a pretty good ability to read conditions, currents, etc. Getting through the surf was a non issue on the way out. I found that the tougher part was coming back in to shore. It is hard to tell when you are getting into the surf zone with your head down. I found it best to exaggerate the rotation on the breath stroke to gain a little extra time to look backwards.

David: Nice race!!! Congrats!!

Tim: Great race, as usual!

I had a little bad luck this weekend. I couldn't make my Saturday ride because I had a dentist appointment and missed it. Sunday's are usually "our day" for me and the wife. So we went and did a group ride with some folks from the gym. She still has trouble keeping up and is quickly learning how to fuel and hydrate. However, these rides usually mean me pushing her to keep up the pace the last 15 miles or so. Honestly, though, this is a great workout for me! We ran at her pace after to complete a brick. Unfortunately, during the ride, she had a newb clipless moment and took down both us with our new bikes. She managed to mangle up her saddle pretty good and knock both my rear and front deraileur out of wack. Fortunately, there was no major structural damage done to either bike. She was more embarassed than hurt. A quick trip to the bike shop got us all straightened out. So I have a fresh tune-up on the P4 before Evergreen Tri this weekend.
