Some people hold that it should be only above the neck, which is here I tend to settle. So, head colds are workoutable. Sore throats are questionable for training. Anything in the chest (rattling, wheezing, lungs seemingly full of great gobs of god-knows-what) means you do not exert at all .......... AND you have every right to recruit a loved one to give you all the TLC you so richly deserve! |

After reading about supination, or whatever it is I do when I run, I selected Nike Air Copius. Based primarily a price compromise and after trying a few different pair on. I know I should be fitted by a running store but haven't done that yet. Generally they felt fine, feel like they need a bit of time to feel natural to me. I have a bit of lingering pain in my hip, probably from a piriformis issue left over from last weeks death march/trail run and some mild pain/tightness in my ankle and heel..all of these aches and pains are on my right side-blistered toe, ankle, hip |

Extreme Veteran 371![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mobile | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDGood Morning Everyone, Well the race yesterday was good. Hit part of my goal which was to beat my last 5k time which 35:28. I finished yesterday in 33:41min. The other half that I did not hit was to only walk 1 time for no more than 2 min. I walked 2 times (1st 2min and the 2nd 1:20min). Tried slowing the pace to see if I could avoid the walk but that did not happen. I think part of my problem was about 1 mile in my throat became really dry and when I hit the water station at 1.5 I did not take any water. I was afraid that if I took some water that I would cramp. For the last 2 months of my training I have only drank water at the end of my run workouts. I know just a little water would not make me cramp but yesterday I was not thinking that. Future note, I will drink the water. I have posted my race log if you want to go and check it out. Well I did get my bike yesterday and took it for a spin this morning. Wow big difference from my mtn bike. I do have to say I will be riding in my subdivison for a while until I get used to the handeling. I might have to invest in a new saddle bcuz Im sore you know where, but 1st I will by some tri shorts to see if the padding in them will help. During my ride my hands did not get numb but they did get sore (the meaty part of the hand) I guess that has to do with me leaning forward on the bike. The bike at the gym I would just rest my hands on the bars but no body weight. I guess over time my hands will adjust. But I do love the bike. Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDGEORGE - Where to begin --- sweet race or sweet bike? I'll start with the race and the 1:47 improvement over a few weeks ago. In racing terms that is huge, and you should be very pleased with it. As for the walking being more than you wnated, well, that's somehting you will get balanced out in time. Pacing in any of the disciplines takes lots of time to master, with running being more problematic than cycling or swimming. The other thing that takes time is getting your mind to behave. You're right that a little water very likely wouldn't make you cramp, but your mind wasn't hearing any of that yesterday. Even with all of the racing I've done, my mind can still be like a balky mule and make me do (or not do) something I shouldn't do (or should). Anyhow, be patient with all of this, and accept each minor glitch as a learning opportunity and another piece of the experience puzzle. Nice bike! (Are those Look-style pedals?) Very fine indeed! Give it a few rides before you think about changing out the saddle. Those little narrow saddles can take some getting used to, and often it just takes a while for your sits bones (and eleswhere) to get used to it. The other thing that takes some time is working through various muscle aches. Think of it like going to the gym and lifting for the first time in a few months -- tha muscles and joint s might protest mightily for a while. So sore hands can go with the turf, as can tight shoulders and back, achey hips, and assorted numbnesses. Most of these pesty things go away in short order, so just hang with it. Keeping to your neighborhood for a while is probably wise, but if it has lots of stop-and-go places, just remember that you're clipped in to the pedals. If they are Look-style ones, it won't take long for you to master the ankle-flick to snap right out of them. And if they seem too tight or too loose (that is, how your cleat fits into them), it is an easy adjustment with the little screw on the pedal. Zoom, zoom!!! |

Veteran 283![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() New York | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDGreat bike George! I took a week off last week and did nothing. Not part of my plan -- work seemed to have gotten in the way of everything. I did get in a ride (spin) yesterday and then for a short swim. Today was a "run/walk" of 2 miles and then a longer swim. I have to get back on track. I did notice that getting back on the treadmill my hip started hurting. I just don't know what is going on with it. At least it looks like spring is just around the corner so I will be able to get outside and run, then I will know if something is going on with my hip because of the treadmill or something else... Hope everyone is doing well! Alex |

Extreme Veteran 371![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Mobile | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDSteve, well I talked to my wife about Nations Tri and she said it was a no go on our budget since you will be leaving her job in January to student teach, but she did say if I wanted to go the TNT route she was all in. Im looking to see how my my social network will help on raising the money. I feel that my network I have will get me about half way, but then I still have my brothers social network which is about 3 times as large as mine and then my family and friends network. I really think it could be possible, but I still have to see what all TNT can do. Possibly I will get to meet you in person in Sept. The pedals are Shimano and not really sure what kind, all I know is I do clip in them and then twist the ankle out to pop-out. My subdivision has a few stops where I will need to slow down to make sure no one is coming, but since I will be riding around 4am, I will not have to stop and wait for traffic to pass. Well I'm joining a gym next week with an indoor pool so I can start my oly training on March 7th. The gym has a 6 lane 25 yard pool. Edited by gdsemiller 2011-02-27 9:03 PM |

Well today is Feb 28th and it was weigh-in day and the results are good. Last time I weighed in was mid Jan which was about 3 weeks after I started training and I lost the big goose egg 0 in pounds. Im very pleased with the results but still have a loooonnngggg way to go.. 8 down and about 45 to go before 12/31/11 which will put me at 175, but I would love to get back to the weight I should be which is 155 which means I have 65 pounds to go before 12/31/11.. Hope everyone has a great day, Im heading to the ice cream shop to get a XL banana split.. Ha ha just joking.. Have a great day. Next weigh-in is 3/31/11 |

(And I'll pay for your ticket to a Nationals game, too!) Very fine work on dropping the 8lbs! I know you were baffled by the goose egg at the previous weigh-in, so you must be thrilled to have made some demonstable progress since then. As for Dec 31 ---- still a loooong way off! Regular swimming should help with the weight-loss too; it sure does for me. One week to go until you can glub-glub-glub with the rest of us!! 4a.m. rides??? I hope you're lit up like a Christmas tree! I have no lights of refelctors on my bike, but then again I always ride in broad daylight. Stay safe out there! |

I KNOW she will work me over but good, and I'm prepared for an ordeal of A.R.T. in all of its interactive, participatory torture-glory*. I refer to her space as "Tina's House of Pain", and while it doesn't usually turn out that way, I know tomorrow will. Gulp. Very fine work the past couple of days. You may have been slightly inactive the previous week, but the past two days had some good stuff in them. Keep it up! *A.R.T. stands for Active Release Technique, and in its purest form is a cross between massage and rolfing. Moreover, in that form it requires the patient to work against and/or with whatever manipulations the therapist is doing. So while she is digging in on some muscle or fascia, I am moving the limb to maximize the effect. Yowch!!! The wimpy side of my brain wants me to restrict or stop my movement, while Tina is saying "More!" and "Hold!" and "Again!". She hasn't brought me to tears yet, however. |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDELLEN - Nice of you to shoulder the blame for the repeats.....but I know thta's just your way of addressing my periodic "senior's moments". ("If I write the same thing fiver times, maybe he'll acknowledge it and remember it.") Isn't that the oddest thing about those training plans! It must be over 97% of all triathletes who are working still, and so many workouts call for big sessions during a standard M-F work week. I used to beat myself silly trying to fit in the longer sessions after work, and fortunately I had (or took) the liberty to leave work earlier than normal when it was imperative. I know you are worried about FHM and then Columbia right on its heels, but FHM is still 8 weeks and that's still a nice, long time for you. The good weather ought to be some incentive, and hopefully as spring continues, your work demands will lessen. I continue to regret not signing up for Columbia; oh, woe! I was looking at my photos from last year wondering if I should order some (yes, i know, it's a bit late -- but the option is still there!), and it brought back to me the good day I had. On the other hand, I continue to wrestle with a few minor aches and sorensses, so were I in for this year I would be fussing about maybe not being able to do it and having to eat the fee. Waaahhhh! I continue to watch the Nations numbers, most recently at 69%. I figure that's good for another month, and I feel I need that kind of wiggle-room. When I signed up for Cayuga Lake about 10 days ago, it was at 274/300, and a year or two ago I saw it at a similar number --- and two days later it had filled. So, wouldn't you know -- I signed up 10 days ago when it was at 274....and now it's at only 280. Grrr! Edited by stevebradley 2011-02-28 10:05 AM |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDGENE - For all of the races I have done, none have involved flying and shipping the bike. So, as for first-hand info for you, I can't help. As for how hard it is, well, tens of thousands of people do it every year and see no big problems. It would be hard for me because (a) I don't like flying, and (b) mechanical things (like putting a bike back together again) frighten me. Other than those, I have no real good reasons! There is the extra cost of shipping, but most people just pay it and move on. The Nations results will show scads of people from far-flung places, so if you decide to do it you will have lots of airborne company. I've done a bunch of bizarro drives for races, and I dare say that more people would consider flying to a race than would entertain doing the drives I have done. One man's meat is another man's poison, I guess about sums it up. A few days ago Nations would at 69% full. I figure that's good for another 4-6 weeks, but keep an eye on it if you are thinking strongly about doing it. Some registrant lists are kept up to dat by the minute, others have long lags. So, maybe that 69% reflects a total from last week.....but there are still 128 entries to fully process. Who knows for sure? |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDWith Feb about to evolve into March, I totalled my workout time for Jan&Feb, and then compared that to last year's frist two months. My, my, my, how things can change! SWIM '10 --- 680 minutes '11 --- 1312 min. BIKE '10 --- 2030 min '11 --- 2269 min. RUN '10 --- 1116 min '11 --- 667 min STRENGTH '10 --- 90 min. '11 --- 1477 min. C-C SKI '10 --- 407 min. '11 --- 870 min. As for strength, I didn't take the gym option of my Ottawa rec pass until March. As for run, it was so strong last year because I went through the winter and spring with no injuires or setbacks. I wish my total for Jan-Feb this year had been more like 1000 minutes. Happy with swim totals so far this season! It feels like I've spent a ton of time on the bike the past two months, but it's not that far ahead of '10. Huh. Those skiing totals were at that level two weeks ago, minus 32 minutes yesterday. The first 6 weeks of '11 were very conducive to mindless skiing! I've now gone 63 straight days doing something or other of the above, and that's too much. Granted, a few of those days have only had a mindless ski, but i have to do better at taking the odd day for complete rest. Last year I had five complete rest days in Jan-Feb. Onwards! |
