Sprint_DA - 2008-07-19 12:32 PM I'm heading back over to the LBS to look at P2C's for the second time today. This time I'm going in tri stuff so I can ride it without worrying about my jeans getting caught in the chain. Anyone know of a LBS within, say 200 miles of D-port that might actually have a Felt B-12 in stock in a 58cm?

Have you looked in IL?

Yeah, a bit. Found some tri shops in the Chicago suburbs, just haven't made it back out there since I actually started looking at the bikes.

When are you looking to buy your new bike? Or is the answer to that as soon as you sell the old one? How old is your current bike anyway?

I bought the current bike back in Jan/Feb when I really started training for this.  I don't really need a new bike at all.  I doubt that a tri bike is going to make me faster, as I really just need more time in the saddle.  But that's only part of the point.  I came to an understanding with myself that I couldn't go out on the weekends or anything until I had the bike paid off.  Now that I've done that it seems like my mind said "well it's fair game again." So in some ways I want to make a more long term commitment with my brain to make sure I keep working on this.  That may sound dumb, but sometimes it doesn't hurt to trick yourself, right?

I'm not sure if it sounds dumb, but it does sound expensive   I'm more of a 'if I use this product x amount/ or participate in an activity for x amount of time then I can buy y.'  This works well for me since I am a freakishly exceptionally task oriented person, and I will try my hardest to meet any goal put in front of me.  Do you see yourself wanting to do longer distances, 'cause I could definitely see that as a motivation for getting a tri bike.

To avoid too much tri talk in TAN, I bought some new cloth napkins at the farmer's market, my old ones were a fall pattern, though I did find a mini-runner that matched  the fall napkins.  Apparently, despite the fact that this was my first time back to the market, one of the produce guys remembered me from last year and said that because of me, they now carry smaller bags of greens for the single people (I made a comment about it last fall).  I asked him if they were popular, and he said that they were.  I really have no idea why I have this effect on people.

Have you ever done the thing where you write something down to have it on paper and make it real in your mind? And then when you read it, it's about the dumbest thing ever? The tri-bike right now, I need to accept that it's just not a good financial decision. I do want to do longer distances. My plan is for an Oly this year, going back and doing a few of the same sprints next year and adding a few Oly's and a HIM, and then the next year doing a sprint or two, an oly or two, a HIM, and an IM. So yeah, a tri bike would be nice for that.

Sounds cool about the farmers market. Nice that they took one of your suggestions and ran with it.

In other non-tri related news, I have two girls coming over for dinner tonight. A few of you, who I've shared the details with will get this (and this may be a bad idea) but it's the girl who's training for the tri with me, and was attempting to drive me crazy, for the moment we'll call her K. Well it's one of K's friends (we'll call her M for the time being) who is coming over for dinner, and M is bringing her neighbor along who she introduced me to last night. Could be a good time.

Edit: Fixed the timeline

Thanks for pointing out the mistake in my previous post.  Fixed it so that the time-line works correctly.

I'm not a chef.  We're having grilled chicken with some different rubs and marinades, salad, and either some chili-garlic noodles, or rice.  No reason trying to get flashy and mess it all up.

Well, K said it was ok.  But who knows if she meant it.  Part of the process of becoming "just friends" was that K brought out a bit of my personality I'd buried and stopped letting out from my car sales days.  Part of not liking her anymore brought back the GFY part of my personality.  So she has to deal with the positive and negative aspects of what she asked for.

So, to answer your question: I don't really see where it matters, we're all just friends right?  Maybe not the way to prove my point, but whatever works.

So, I take it you don't think this is a good idea?  I talked to my mom just now and she almost stopped breathing because she was laughing so hard.  Said it might not be the best idea I've ever had.

Should have just grabbed the Meeps and gone back out.  Little dog like that could attract women like flies to a bug-zapper.

The Blonde wants to see it, but we're going to wait until it opens at the IMAX theater in Sacramento... we figure that will filter out the obnoxious teens and gangbangers, it will have been out for a while and the ticks aren't cheap for IMAX (God, we're getting old).

I've seen two movies this week... took the children to see Journey to the Center of the Earth/3D (silly, but not bad, and the actress playing the love interest is HOT), and we saw Kung Fu Panda yesterday at the new Jordan Creek 20 multiplex. That new mall is something else... like a development dropped out of LA into the fields of West Des Moines. Iowa has never had that upscale of a mall before. The theater was nice... we don't have anything quite like that in Sacramento yet, not even out in the El Dorado Hills Town Center.

I have to laugh, though, these "Town Centers" make no sense in a world of $3 to $4 a gallon gasoline. They're completely unwalkable, some idiot (probably an architect rather than a traffic enginner/transportation planner) designed the sidewalks and parking areas - constant conflicts between ped and auto traffic. If gas goes much higher I see these exurban areas being abandoned, quite frankly - its already happening in Southern California.

Sadly, though, all of the shopping and retail is abandoning Des Moines and even is leaving the inner suburbs for the far flung reaches of West Des Moines. There used to be 'good' retail on 22nd Street in West Des Moines and the old Valley West Mall is showing the strain of stores leaving for Jordan Creek. I've never understood why we keep building farther and farther out in areas where there's not much too 'growth' occurring - in slow growth places like Iowa, its just moving the shells, so to speak, from one area to another, and leaving blight in its wake.

Yeah the increasing gas prices has affected us even in this little dink town where everything is within 5 miles of us... some of the few big name stores that are here are closing down becase profit margins have dropped so much... uggg.. even less here than before

I've been down the Jordan Creek once or twice.  I generally only see stores of that kind when I'm shopping with my grandmother.  I think part of the success of retail "town centers" like that, belongs to TV and the internet.  Now every Jane and John Doe can figure out exactly what people are wearing in X show thanks to the www and go out and buy it for themselves.  The amount of money that people spend on clothes is staggering.  Yes, I will admit to buying new clothes here and there but that has more to do with the fact that I am (a) a stain magnet, and (b) taking my time to transition to a grown up wardrobe.

Morning TAN.

Morning TAN.

What's even worse is some of the celeb stuff doesn't even look good on the celebs, and it looks even worse on ordinary people.

People also need to learn what looks good on them for their age, physical condition and body type.

You do realize that if they did that, the whole fashion industry would implode right? Next you'll be suggesting that people populate the wardrobes with classy, timeless pieces instead of trendy things that will be out of style by the time they've been washed three times. Do you love this country or not?

On an unrelated note, I'm currently looking at my old roommate's wedding photos.  I think that their photographer did a much better job catching things than people.  For example, the cake looks great, but the pre-ceremony photo of the bride, not so much.  It's really too bad.

Morning TAN (or morning for the next few minutes) I hope, if it's as hot everywhere as it's going to get here today, that everybody's already put their workout in for the day.  The forecast in my training log is calling for 94 degrees here...seems hot to me.
Hope everyone has a good day.

Morning Sprint.  Haven't put in my workout yet, but it's recovery week so it'll be a short one.  Have you been having the bad storms out there? (How was dinner?
