tri808 - 2010-07-25 11:25 PM I have to say...my power meter training has really paid off.  It's time you joined the club.

No convincing needed.  As soon as we buy a house, that's the next thing on the list!

robingray_260 - 2010-07-25 4:52 PM I just signed up for my 2nd tri.  It is the Boulder Sunset Sprint Tri on September 11th.  Should be interesting, both the swim and bike portions are longer than my first tri and it is in the afternoon. Now, I just got to get my a$$ on the bike!

Awesome.  Keep your training up and you should be fine.

I have been doing some checking of all my old running logs and found that this month will be the longest mileage month I have ever had.  I will end the month (unless something unforeseen happens) with no less than 78.5 miles.  I am going to run another 5 miles on Wednesday and I could run a couple of very easy miles on Friday or Saturday.  Either way I am happy to say my mileage is increasing and should easily get to 100 miles for a month or two leading up to the marathon.  I am pretty excited about seeing this number grow.  7 years ago if someone told me I'd be running 100 miles in a month I would have checked them for a crack pipe or meth mouth.

Just thought I'd let everyone in on my little victory.

Just curious, what is everyone's high mileage month for all the disciplines?  (If it'd not too hard to find.)

Here's mine:
30800 yds swim - Dec. 09
277.6 miles bike - Sept. 09
78.5 mile run - this month

A couple of you guys will crush me on the bike mileage but its all good and maybe I'll get there in a few years.  After all this is my first year of training.  My first complete year will be done at the end of August.

Nice job Dirk.....I honestly am not sure how to figure out what my max distances are.  I wasn't recording distances for all my swims in the pool this year.   Probably around 35000m or so.  My bike is probably somewhere around 300 miles.

This month is definitely my longest running month with about 46 miles.  I know that doesn't sound like a lot, but holy crap, my legs feel like it is!

706 miles!?  That my friend....is a lot of miles.  I only have something like 1600 this whole year!

Swim - 43,000 yards - March 2010
Run - 121 miles - June 2010
Bike - ~1,800-1,900 miles - June 2006 (Greensburg, PA to Boulder, CO).  July was close too, Boulder, CO to San Fransisco, CA.  Total was Baltimore to San Fran over about 63 days (51 riding days) and just under 4,000 miles (we chose a rather indirect route).

Wow....how much gear do you need to haul to go cross country like that?  Are you using a regular road bike, or a touring bike with racks?

Had an awesome mountain bike ride today.  It was just under an hour and I could definately tell that my tri training had helped in the aerobic arena! I did the same ride a few times last year and had to get off and almost puke a few times.  Never had to stop today! I hope to go again tomorrow with a women's group.

I think I would be too horribly embarrased to post my monthly "all time best" totals for each sport. If I get a chance, I will look into it - but I only started logging my times in March.

BTW - you guys rock - If I could bike 700 miles or run 100 miles in a month I would........ (don't know it is so far beyond my comprehension!)

Sorry, I've been away for a couple days. I'm still visiting my parents and it's a little harder to find time to check this site.

J- Awesome job on the tri. I knew you would rock the bike, but the swim was probably a cool surprise for you considering you haven't been able to train at all for that. Looks like you've improved a lot on the swim (looked at your past races). Gives me hope that I can get better myself if I keep working at it.

Robin- I hear you. I find getting on the bike to be the toughest part. It's my worst area. I have fun riding with my friends, but have a hard time motivating myself to ride alone, especially in the early morning (I cheese out and do spinning class instead, but I know it's not the same.)

My best mileage has been
swim: 10,150 yards (July-so far)
bike: 76.75 miles (July-so far)
run 50.45 miles (June)

Going to run a 5K in Buffalo this Friday. I've been pretty good about running at least 3 miles a day since I've been here. Looking to maybe break 30 minutes. My best 5 k time so far was 31.23, so I think I could do it. We'll see...

Thanks.  I think I've found that my swimming times in tris have improved more so because I'm managing my effort much better.  In my first couple of tris, I tried to go too hard and fight the crowd.  In my most recent tris, I just went with the flow in the beginning and conserved my energy until thing spread out.

Good luck with the 5k.  5ks are all about pain management...which is why I don't like to run them....  Give it your absolute best...keep pushing when it hurts, and I'm sure you'll do great.

We rode Lemond Tourmalets my first year doing it (2004) then Lemond Renos in 06.  We cheated though, 2 SAG vans carried our personal stuff and our group gear.  We were a group of about 25 college aged students based out of Johns Hopkins in Baltimore riding across the country raising money for the American Cancer Society and Baltimore's Hope Lodge (a free residence for those receiving outpatient care at one of Baltimore's hospitals (Hopkins is pretty big for cancer treatment and people would come in from all over the country for care). It's basically how I got into cycling.  http://www.4kforcancer.org/index.html.  They've gotten fancier since it first started and I directed it, and changed affiliation from Hopkins, but they're still pretty sweet.  They are accepting applications for 2011 too... http://www.4kforcancer.org/riders/Become_a_Rider.html.

Question

ok, a thread I read recently got me thinking about this. My swimming improved a lot since I worked on my stroke technique which my masters coach taught me. Would my running improve if some kind of coach watched me run and gave me advice? If so, where would I find someone like this? Does running have a "technique" like swimming? Not really looking for a long term coach, just someone who could critique me and give me things to work on.

while there is some running "technique" that can help...for most beginners, we should just run how we run.  Other than the simple things such as not wasting energy with excessive upper body or head movement, I don't see how improving your running technique will help nearly as much as just running more.

Swimming is all about technique IMO.  The human body was not designed to swim, so we need to teach our bodies the most efficient way to swim.  The human body was designed to run though...so there isn't that much to learn.

I have heard, "you run how you run."  Although there are ways to make one faster....who knows.

I obviously have nothing to add because I can't even run to the kitchen...whatever.

Wow - some impressive numbers.  Mine are slowly creeping up, but I have a long way to go:

Swim: 27,000 meters June 2010
Bike:   225 miles  May 2010 (but I'm going to top that this month)
Run:   85 miles  March 2010

IMO, I would not hire a coach.  While I think there are "proper" running forms, I believe nearly everything you need to learn about running form could be done reading articles from running mags and websites.  If you were a potentially pro or elite athlete you might benefit from this area but being a wife and mother who likes to make sure you have time with your family and you have another job, you're probably not shooting to be a pro/elite athlete.  I guess what I'm trying to say is, it's all about goals and money, if you want to spend the money you can.

Check out this article and use the other link at the bottom of the page to find more information.

Thanks everyone.

Read the article, seems like stuff I do naturally. haha...def not trying to be a pro so no running coach for me. Just something another thread got me thinking about.

Looks like I'll have to stick to what I've been doing. Just running, and running, and running (although not as much as most of you )

Good news: Skinny jeans officially fit. And not like 'oh I can button them, but I can't breathe'. They actually fit comfortably. I went shopping with my mom yesterday and was able to buy a smaller size in clothes. So hopefully when I get home the scale will play along.

nice job on the jeans!

As for the running, just keep doing it, and pay attention to a few simple things.
make sure your feet land under you, not out in front, arms move forward and back, not across your chest, and just run!

Just got in a 4 mile easy run.  Which means I just doubled my running training miles for the month...LOL.

Looking at my run times from my previous races, I really have a lot of room to improve on the run.  I'm sick of being passed on the run.  The only guys I ever pass are the guys that bonk near the end.

Jackie - great job on the weight loss - it seems that slow and steady is really the only way that works! Good luck on your 5k this weekend - I bet you smash the 30 minutes goal!

So my totals are no where near you guys, but surprisingly they all came in May.  I worked out A LOT that month (comparatively!).

Swim: 14,800 yds
Bike: 94 miles
Run: 34 miles

Glad you all suggested doing this - it gives me some goals for when kids get back in school. I want to bike over 100 miles and run over 50 miles in the same month (hopefully September). Then I can go from there.

Womens group mountain bike ride was cancelled for today b/c of rain. So, I was stuck on the trainer - ughh!!! However, I have to say that the trainer is way more comfortable now that I have the aero bars on and I can put my elbows on the pads.  Probably not the best form - but whatever keeps me on for another few minutes is worth it!
