Today is day three of consecutive rest. I had planned on doing a run tonight but it escaped me.

On the positive side, I spent a long time getting to know my bike a little better. I picked up some brushes and a chain cleaning kit and went to town. There was SOOOOO much gunk and grease built up on it. I learned how to adjust my front derailleur which wasn't as easy as I had hoped. It seemed like no matter what I did, the chain was rubbing the derailleur somewhere. I think I finally dialed it in just right though. It's liberating to know that I can do a basic tune-up myself without having to pay big money at the LBS. The thing is shining like new now and I'll take it for a short spin this week for a test ride before packing it up for the race this weekend.

Tomorrow I'll do a swim and a run to make up for today.

Alright Brian, from now on the P4 needs to stay in the garage when riding with the wife! Whew, that could of been ugly. Glad to hear it was minor.

LOL...agreed. When the new wheels for the road bike come I'll just ride that. Any of you guys insure your'e bikes. My agent just quoted me $700!!! yikes!!

shmeeg - 2010-07-12 8:42 PMTim do you ever use Heed or just stick w/ Perpetuem all the time?  I got some single serve packets to try out for short distance stuff and 60-90 min runs.  Opinion?
Yep. I use HEED when my race or training is less than roughly two hours. I mix one to two scoops in a water bottle and consume on the bike portion of the race. Not sure what flavors you got, but I really only care for melon. For me, the other flavors can taste a little chalky.

Nope! Funny thing though, if I was going to insure a bike, it wouldn't be my tt bike. My MTB is worth about 3x as much. Pretty sick when I stop to think about it.Hopefully that is about to change though. I'm in the market for some new wheels. Have you guys looked at the SRAM s60s? Apparently, they are made by Zipp and replaced the Flashpoint line. Carbon with aluminum braking surface, but come with a slight weight penalty over 404s, roughly 190 grams. But you could attribute the extra weight to the greater rim depth at 60 mm. Price seems to be right at about $1k.

He just moved and is getting acclimated to a new area. I haven't heard from him, but he may just be busy

Word.  I have some strawberry recoverite and I really like the taste.  I mixed a bottle of the melon to use today but left it in the freezer this morning :/.

I looked at them, and hear a bit about them over on ST.  They look hot on red bikes too.  There might even be a set in the classifieds but I can't get on ST from work.

Hey guys!  Been away in Idaho for a week on vacation.  Lounging around a cabin, fishing, playing golf -- with a cart.  Guess we'll call it a recovery week.

Taking today off of work here at home to "recover".  Made it to the pool this AM and planning either a run or bike later + a PM swim lesson.

I'll also likely go ahead and send in my entry for the sprint triathlon on 25 July.  Still a bit spooked about the swim, but pretty confident that I can survive.  My son's going to do it as well, have to brag on him a bit....

The boy's 15 and is loving it here in Naperville.  There's a summer XC program that he is in that is absolutely incredible.  Program is just 3 AM's a week; however, the kids from the team are running 2x a day per a schedule.  In July Alex did 252 miles!!!!  All of them between 6 and 7:30 pace.  Saturday they did a 10 mile run with the last two at a "pick up" pace of 5:30.  With all the running, he has not been out on the bike much.  However, last week he took my bike out for a 9 mile ride and averaged 22 mph.  He's really excited about the triathlon in a couple of weeks.  If he keeps his head and turns in a solid swim he has a legit chance to finish in the top five.

OK, now I might be a bit nervous. Wetsuits aren't allowed when water temps are this high...right?

I believe you can still wear them but your time may not get recorded officially. I'd be prepared to go either way...that's what I'm doing for Vineman. The water temp won't break 78 in the morning, but I may go without the wetsuit anyways. T1 and T2 are in different locations, which means you have to throw all your swim stuff in a bag at T1 which gets transported to the finish line for you. Removing a wetsuit and putting it in a bag takes time. Alternatively, swimming without a wetsuit may cost me a bit of time in the water, and I'll have to put my tri top on in T1.

Any thoughts on which way to go on this? I'm comfortable swimming without it, so I'm really just looking for which one will be faster.

Not usually.  But some events may make it optional for AGers.  What does the race website say?  Or did they email anything out?  I was thinking about that the other day, if I would drop a race if they said no wetsuits.  If it was an ocean swim I'd probably definitely bail.

Saw another thread discussing this exact thing yesterday.  Do you know how much faster your suit makes you per 100?  If it saves you more time than it takes to get the suit off and stuffed into a bag, it will probably be beneficial to wear it.  Otherwise, ditch it if you think you can do without.

Swim Course (1.5K International, 500m Sprint)
The swim starts and ends at the main boat launch.
The course is diamond shaped and consists of 1-loop.
Swim caps are mandatory and provided in your race packet.
Lifeguards are located around the course on boats and rescue boards. If you experience trouble during the swim, wave your arm in the air.
Participants may rest on boards without disqualification.
Wetsuits are allowed as per USAT rules.
Swim goggles are recommended but not required

Looks like USAT rules!! It's a lake swim so I'm up in the air here. I'm sure I can finish the swim, this is just more opportunity for a disasterous start and a blow up in the water. Maybe I'm overthinking this. However, I've never swam this distance non stop even with a wetsuit. I've swam it in the pool with 3x30 breaks between 400's. I don't know, hopefully this is just mental.

I wish I had a better idea of how fast I swim w/ vs. w/o a wetsuit. I'll probably end up wearing it.

In my limited experience I've never heard of a suit making anyone SLOWER, I just can't see the downside to wearing one.

You're good then unless you're trying to podium:

4.4 Wet suits. Each age group participant shall be permitted to wear a wet suit without penalty in any event sanctioned by USA Triathlon up to and including a water temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit. When the water temperature is greater than 78 degrees, but less than 84 degrees Fahrenheit, age group participants may wear a wet
suit at their own discretion, provided however that participants who wear a wet suit within this temperature range shall not be eligible for prizes or awards. Age group participants shall not wear wet suits in water temperatures equal to or greater than 84 degrees Fahrenheit.

"F" it!!! I'm doing it even if I can't wear the wetsuit. I just ran 6 miles of intervals and felt great, even though I've been slacking on the running because of my knees. My cycling is definitely at a peak avgeraging more than 20mph on most of my rides. I'm not wasting that because I can't use a wetsuit. I'll struggle my way through it and hammer the bike/run!!!

goals:
swim: 50 minutes
T1: 3 minutes
bike: 1hr 10 minutes
T2: 2 minutes
run: 1 hour

3 hours 5 minutes total

Secretly, I'd like to break 3 hours though

Just got caught up on this discussion. Damn straight Brian, no backing out! You will be fine, wetsuit or not. Looks like Jay covered the rule thoroughly for you. The biggest issue with wearing the suit will be overheating. It can be quite miserable wearing a wetsuit in warm water. If you are going to wear the suit, I hope it is a ling john. Also, I have faith that you will break three hours.

Dave I have found that most people are about 10 seconds per hundred faster in a wetsuit. If this holds true for you, over the course of a HIM, that is a time savings of 3.5 minutes. That's a pretty big time savings in my opinion.

Alright, I just posted my race report, http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=217256&posts=1&start=1

fwiw, I am a good 10-15 seconds/100 faster with a wetsuit, but I'm a balance challenged swimmer.  For sure the better swimmer you are, the less the suit helps.  For me personally, if it's legal, I'm wearing it.  I would be fine without one, just slower.

My race this weekend was somewhere around 70-75 degrees in the water, and I never felt at all overheated in my sleevless suit.
