Is this person's hand and forearm position correct? I always feel like I don't have a perfectly straight line from finger tips to elbow, but I think I look like this person. See how her fingers are flexed backward? Is this correct?  If not, how can you work to correct it (since this is what I do)?

Yup. That's pretty much what it should look like mid-pull.

One way to tell if you have a straight line down is 1) look at it, and 2) are you feeling water pressure on every part of that straight paddle, from fingertips-palm-wrist-forearm low-forearm high-side of elbow?

She looks like she's pulling back hella hard. The finger hyperextension could be camera angle or it could be she's actually pulling so hard the water is bending her fingers into that hyperextension.

I hyperflex my hand/fingers in an effort to be very "straight" through my entire "paddle," but I think it makes my hand too rigid, because I don't feel like I have a good "feel" of the water.  But when I try to relax, I feel like I'm cupping my hand more than using it as part of a fingertips-palm-wrist-forearm paddle.  I've also been told I don't glide as much as I should through the water when wearing my wetsuit.  What's that supposed to mean?

I actually have no idea what that means, but if I had to take a guess, it would be that you slack off a little on a long, streamlined, body position with tone because the wetsuit's buoyancy is supporting your body anyway.

As for the rest ... just a thought ... how much fist drill do you do?

Uhhh...none.  Undecided I was doing a lot of drills over the winter in my coached pool swim, but now that we're doing OW we don't drill nearly as much, instead working on siting and race pace.  I was also looking at your advice to that person in TT regarding speed improvement and she was swimming 6000-7000y/week and you told her more yardage...ack! I swim like 1500m a week.  I'm guessing that's not enough to get good at much of anything.

She's been swimming 6-7K/week with a master's squad for a while, with some intensity it sounded like.

Like any sport, in swimming when you start doing any at all, and any building at all (especially with form) you'll improve rapidly at first. That also rapidly goes away.

1500/week may be fine for you to get through a sprint-tri swim. If you're looking to get better, just like with cycling, running, or anything else, you're going to have to do more than 30-40min/week of it.

Dammm.  I've definitely hit the plateau from not knowing how to swim to being decent enough to get through a 800m race.  I know I need to swim more, I just don't make the time for it.  Time to HTFU and get in the pool/lake/...ocean?!

cdban66 - 2012-07-25 7:34 PM Yanti, I wanted to thank you for your swimming help (again). Now I just have to go put it all into action, probably be hitting the pool tomorrow. [Rant] BTW, I don't know how you all spend any time in TT right now. There just seem to be some threads in there that make me wonder what people are thinking. Not all of them, obviously, but there are more then a few that leave me scratching my head. I'm far from an expert, so the advice you get from me is what worth what you paid me for it. But there are some folks here that have really valuable info to share. Why go in there and ask a question about something and then argue with the answers you get? It makes no sense. I am more convinced then ever that this runs in cycles. OK, I'm done, thanks. [/Rant]

Oh, I've been ranting to Salty about it plenty.

It does run in cycles, but with BT getting so big, it's getting less that folks know who each other are, and I think the respect level has gone down. Both the respect accorded to those who know what they're talking about, and as we get impatient, ours toward others. That's our own fault and we have to own it.

Not that simple, but ... most of the truly top-info, top-level posters just don't post anymore, and I understand why, and the site owners and mods, including myself, are trying very hard to think of practical changes that will both retain 'experts' as well as forums that are newcomer-friendly.

I understand one of the experts (BryanCD?)that used to post here often got banned from the site. I'm not sure why, but he was one of the posters whose advise I paid attention to.

It's a long and complicated tale, but let's just say this site is stringently moderated. The rules are clear and you get some leeway if you're generally a nice person and helpful, but not much.

Bryan does keep his logs open, and he is a very approachable person if you want to ask him anything.

Understood. He was very helpful after the 70.3 from Hades. I try to peek at his logs about once a week and see if I can glean anything. And Scout is the man! I ran into him on Running ahead (at least I think it was the same guy, they had very similar writing styles). Always very helpful and willing. Overall, I think the mods here do a good job of maintaining civility while allowing a healthy discourse. I do think there should be a rating system based on something more tangible then post number. Something along the lines of how reviews can be marked as helpful on Amazon or wherever. If someone gets a higher review rating, I know I can trust their advice. IDK, just an idea.

You and me both.

It's easy to lull ourselves, myself, into the "swim's such a small part of tri" myth and not accord it much time.

It's a phenomenal way to build up one's aerobic engine, so to speak, without the pounding of running or even cycling.

It ensures a maximally powered bike because you're racing the bike leg from the get-go, not staggering through T1 and using part of the bike for recovery.

Good bike = good run.

Yup, same guy.

The post review (simple "like" as on Facebook, possibly) feature is being very strongly considered for the new BT site (which marmadaddy and Ron have been busting their butts on full-time for quite some time). I would be surprised if it is NOT included.

Cool. Thanks.

I believe the mods and the site owners have done a marvelous job with what could become quite the mess. Thank you to all of you!

The post review (simple "like" as on Facebook, possibly) feature is being very strongly considered for the new BT site (which marmadaddy and Ron have been busting their butts on full-time for quite some time). I would be surprised if it is NOT included.

Where has he been lately, by the way? I feel like I haven't seen his input in quite some time. That guy is pretty much the only person I take running advice from. Such a great guy.

Feeling sorry for myself now - my cold picks up strength in the afternoon keep choking on a dry cough

I refrained from running at lunchtime and I won't do the drainer either tonight, time to rest and recover for a day at least.  Tomorrow i've got Pilates and swimming so that's okay.

Nearly hometime....

Artemis' spelling homework was a list of words with 'ea' in the middle - my poem started thusly:

The teacher's name was Mr Bean, he kept his desk very clean
He like to drink hot peach tea, that made his glasses fog with steam.

Sorry about your cold, Jo, but awesome poetry!  Bet that really helps with the spelling.  Love it when parents get involved with their kids schoolwork.

I love it up there. I have had some unimaginably good times right there in Vancouver. Have also driven Seattle to Calgary to Montana and back, twice. Very good times in America's Hat ToqueWink Sorry, I can't help but get a jab in there.

Kirsten, that is a beautiful pic indeed. If I remember, you are in the Vancouver area, right? So this is probably more for you then anyone else, although everyone feel free to answer this one if you can. As you all know, my wife and I are headed out on an Alaskan cruise in a couple of weeks. We end in Vancouver, and are staying the night to do a little sightseeing. So, the question is, what should we see/do? And more important to me, where should we eat? I believe we'll be in town for about 24 hours. Thanks!

Gosh, it's hard when you are from an area to tell people what to see....Depends on what you are interested in I guess.  Stanley park is right by the cruise ship terminal, if it is a nice day.  The Capilano suspension bridge is cool, as is Grouse Mountain.  The Olympic flame is right on the water as well, probably won't be lit, but still cool to see.  Head into Gastown to see the steam clock for sure.  Where to eat--can't really go wrong downtown.  Steamworks pub is kinda fun if you like pub food and atmosphere.  If you want fancier, cloud 9 is the revolving restaurant at the 'top of Vancouver'

Hope this helps!

Oh yes, sprints hurt, if done at the right intensity.  Funny thing about me, we were doing sets of 200's, then 100's then 50's.  It was like a pyramid workout.  On the 200's I was coming in at around 3:00, then on 100's I was coming in at around 1:30, then at 0:45 on the 50's, my swim instructor said "Reece, you have one speed!"

It is best to spread peanut butter evenly Smile

Surprised Gasp. This has Yanti written all over it. You just had to drag this back into the gutter, didn't you. Or wait, did I just drag it down? No, it was you.

Honey, we haven't even gotten to eating the peanut butter yet ...

For the fact that I am OCD about absolutely nothing (excepting my posts in Tri Talk), I will have a conniption fit if the peanut butter isn't spread evenly, right to the very corners and edges across the whole piece of bread.

As long as it's spread on nice and thick, I'm a happy camper. Bonus if it's crunchy

I love you. *sticky peanut butter {MELON PRESS}*

CRUNCHY {MELON PRESS}

That put a big goofy grin all over my face

Hm. If your 5K pace becomes your marathon pace, then your swim pace will automatically be (scribbling, carry the four, punch the calculator, throw the frog) ... 1:22.22/100. Yards, not meters.

OWWWch.

Awesome afternoon for the manatees, although i'm just a voyeur apparently.

I have no idea what I do on my swim but my elbow has started to bother, slight pain, me on some of my harder/longer workouts, pool workouts get your mind out of the gutter, thoughts?  I think I need to make Sheila's book my next no idea about form I just go...

Where exactly on or in the elbow? Both arms or one (which, and if so, what handed-ness are you?) What kind of pain (stabbing, burning, just feels like a sore muscle, etc.)? I'm going to go look at your logs to see if you've recently ramped up swim intensity or distance.

Does the pain last past the swim? Does it occur at any other time? Have you been doing any kind of extra work with your arm/s (yard, construction, car, lifting, moving, throwing a ball), including repetitive motions like lots of extra mouse clicking?

In the elbow my left, I am left side dominant, stabing ache sort of?  Ugh.. yeah my logs suck right now just finding the mojo...  Nothing really on the extra work side

Okay ... is it that your logging sucks and you've actually been swimming more than that, or that by longer/harder workouts you mean the one 40-ish minute workout you've done recently?

Ha ha ha. busted

Well good news from the UK - Grant Siedle a guy I'm acquainted with from squad has embarked on his English Channel crossing - it's 3am there I can only imagine how terrifying it must be seeing blackness all around and knowing you'll be in there for so long.  The crossing is 33km at its shortest point but the tide and currents can make it longer, another guy did it a couple of years ago and did 60km!  The slower you are the longer it becomes.  Grant is a gun so should be okay.

I am so excited.  Another friend Paul Hoffmann starts his challenge tomorrow, and Robbie from my slow lane goes next week.  Wow.  I am awestruck by their guts and determination and know I would NEVER do it.

Never say NEVER. It has a weird way of becoming your destiny.

That said, I'm NEVER going to swim the Channel either. Too bloody cold.

Cheering for your swim mates!!!

That is so true, when I first met my now best friend Nicki and she told me about triathlon and Ironman I said, I would never do a triathlon, I would never run a marathon, I would certainly never contemplate an Ironman...gotta stop hanging around with Channel swimmers.

It's a bloody catching as well as escalating disease, this endurance stuff.

Beats typhoid or dengue fever....are you still doing Busselton - I'm serious about coming to watch.

YEEEEAAAAAAAAH! Omigosh, what would an IM be without JO LOVE??? Come volunteer again maybe? Hell yeah I'm still doing Busso, why would I be busting my azz otherwise? Also I just about had to give an eyetooth to get in.

Happy dance happy dance happy dance ... and free accommodation (hopefully you didn't notice what my room looked like in Melbourne after I hit it ... )

Spoke to Fotis and he said yeah you should go support Yanti!  So today I will look at flights and all that - I know Busselton is a bit of a way to get to, flight and a long long drive!  So excited!  Not sure I'll volunteer I found that to be most exhausting!  Maybe though if I get on the wetsuit stripping duty then I can go back to bed then come and find you on the bike then on the run!  Whatever, watch out!
