That's an awesome pic!! thanks you guys for posting the info and the pics. I was frantic trying to find the live feed after the tracker seemed to be stalled. It showed Tony at 3 miles out for almost 10 minutes. The next thing I knew Brenda texted me and said he passed her and she was less than a half mile from the finish. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just wanted to drop a quick post even as late as in is here in Madison about 2 am now and I have been catching up FB and finally here. You guys are so awesome I can't even tell you how much I appreciate you guys following me and everyone else in the group racing. Congrats to all the Junkies, it seems like we came and we conquered today! Warren, Jonathan and Matt had great races today! I'll try and get something more detailed posted and the race report won't get done until Wed at the earliest since I won't be getting home until late on Tuesday. I'll get the scouting report ready for Dirk, Brenda and JoAnne although she already knows about the course since she's raced it. My day real quick was a very, very tough swim. It was brutal, I've never swam in anything like that before. I was bounced all over the place and was worried about making the cutoff time. I did not even think about quitting once. I just kept moving along the best I could that is why I posted a 2:04. When I got out of the water I didn't have my legs and I slipped and gentlemen in a wetsuit asked me if I was alright. I looked up and it was Mike Rielly! I said I was fine just a very rough swim. After that I sort of got it together but not much. Brenda actually caught me before I made it to T1 and she was really encouraging me and I was in such a state of shock from the swim I could only nod and say ok LOL! OMG I will have nightmares about that for the rest of my life. I almost didn't make the cutoff to get out of T1 for the bike. I made it was like 30 seconds to spare. You had to be rolling at 9:30 am and I just beat it. The lady was yelling at us to get the bike over the line so we could go. My race almost ended right there. The bike wasn't bad but there was alot of wind on the course plus my avg was down because I had 3 very long stops on the course. I had to use the bathroom for one, I grabbed my special needs bag for another and the last one my shifter came lose for my front crank so I had to fix it. A 57 cent roll of electrical tape saved my race. Yep I taped it up and it worked. The bike course is tough but manageable. I'll get into that another time. I got to see Brenda as I was finishing the bike. It was so great seeing her out there, I got such a boost from Brenda and JoAnne today is was awesome. Going through their add station on the run was great it got me so fired up seeing them there. I really appreciate them volunteering and supporting me there, it was so cool. I totally killed the run! I'm not fast but I can run me some distance and I was strong the entire run. I walked the hills and aid stations but for the most part I ran and ran very well. I had great form today and paced myself the way I did in training. My nutrtion for the bike and run was perfect. I can't tell you how many people were walking. I executed the run perfectly and I think for the most part the entire race. As proud as I am of the run I'm more proud of my swim. If I can swim in that I can handle anything. I'm still in awe doing Ironman is probably the coolest thing I have ever done. Madison knows how to do an Ironman. What an awesome day! More to come this week. I just wanted to say thank you again for helping me make this possible and for all the support today. I should go to bed, I am going to be in a world of hurt come tomorrow. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok quick update on my race. Weather held out to be pretty good, no rain and just the right temp. Over my time was 2:36:38. I finished 17/64. Was a really tough course, Alot of hills and 90deg turns on the bike, there was no where to really get a good pace going and get comfortable. Run was also tough. Constant small steep climbs and descents on a crushed gravel trail. Again no where to settle into a good rhythm. Considering the top 2 here were the top 2 in my last race and they were 10 minutes slower, I'm pretty happy with only adding a little less than 4 minutes. Ill do up a RR report as soon as I get a few minutes. Congrats to the Junkies who represented well this weekend. You guys rock! |

It feels like things are falling apart when you can't get a rhythm going. Knowing some of the same people were racing so much slower points to the toughness of the course for sure. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tony, It was great fun to follow you all day. Brenda and I were texting back and forth, I was, frantically at times, trying to keep up with you on the tracker and getting my own workouts in while trying to keep up with everyone else. Vero, We haven't heard anything about your race. How did you fare? Congrats to everyone that raced yesterday. It was such a huge day for the Junkies! For me, well it looks like I'll be waiting another week before I can register for IMWI. They've delayed the registration fro a week because of technical issues from previous years. Now I'm getting really nervous!!! I will be insanely disappointed if I don't get in to this race! |

![]() | ![]() Tony, you had a crazy successful race. No one, NO ONE, negative splits the run on their first Ironman, while running the entire marathon. That last 8-10 miles was just amazing. That is unbelievable execution. You have to be one happy junkie this morning. Edited by wbayek 2013-09-09 9:25 AM |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by DirkP Holy crap guys! I had no chance of keeping up with you 2! Nice race I guess I will have to concede another race to Warren! Some day I will learn how to swim so at least I am in the fight early on! Originally posted by trigal38 Originally posted by pistuo Tracking app says he's avg'ing around 17mph on the bike a little over 2 hours into it. Perfect. Any updates on Warren and Jonathan? I'm on my laptop and the website does not have any updates. I am back from my bike and checking in on everyone now........... Here are Warren's splits. He pretty much tore up the bike! And Jonathan's race. Jonathan crushed the swim! That's an outstanding swim time! It appears to me that both of them had great races. I hope both are satisfied with their results. |

You should not be disappointed at all. You'll always concede a little time when the course is difficult like that. Looking forward to the RR. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Warren and Matt yes I saw that this morning, holy cow I can't believe that. The best part of my whole race was the run. I definitely killed it and am very proud of that. So many people were walking yesterday I know I executed perfectly. Dirk I saw that and thought about you, that really sucks that they pushed the online registration back but trust me you will get it. Just do it as soon as it opens. I may have to join Dina and head back up here to volunteer so I can return the favor. That would be so awesome cheering you guys on while being there. |

13/47 overall and 7/18 in 40-49 age group. I would have podiumed any other age group. Ah, well that's what I get for starting this whole tri thing in my 40's. I was 56 seconds slower than my personal best on this course but overall I'm pleased with the results.
The swim was awesome. I have never tried to go out hard right off the start on a race swim start before. With only 18 men in my wave I figured this was the time to try it. At the horn I went full (reckless) sprint for the first 75 to 100 yards. At about 60 yards I realized I was elbow to elbow with another swimmer and we were alone. I could see a couple of swimmers close together maybe 5 yards ahead of us when I sighted. I kept motoring on and the other guy faded a bit. At the turn buoy at about 200 yards I glanced back and was a few feet ahead of him and pretty solidly in 4th. I held that position and exited the water 4th in my wave.
I think I had faster transitions than in my previous race on this course, but I did make a mental error that cost me on the run. I forgot to put my water bottle on the bike when I set up transition! I didn't realize until I was already out on the bike course. It was only an 8 mile sprint on the bike, but it was very dry and also a bit smoky from the Yosemite fire (only about 50 miles away from the race location). I would have been able to keep my throat wet during the bike and that would have helped my run. I hammered the whole way on the bike anyway and I think I was a bit faster on the bike than I was last time. I still have to check my bike computer for verification on that.
I had to get water for a very parched throat at both aid stations on the run (run start and just after the turnaround). My throat is very sore today.
In the end I did get a small trophy for second place for best costume. I'll post a couple pictures once I get a chance tonight.
