Expert 1246 West Grove, PA | Subject: RE: T.W.I.S.T.E.R. - March Winds Challenge wgraves7582 - 2010-03-24 8:52 AM TWISTER's - found this on the enemy thread and thought it would be cool to answer if you are up to it! How long have you been doing tris? This is my 4th year training - Did an XTerra 2 years ago, none last year, and depending on my running will do an Xterra this year. What got you into triathlon-ing? Love to bike and run and am improving on the swim so I figured why not! What are your goals this year? Be healthy enough to complete and XTerra, finish TransIowa, and get stronger and faster on the bike What's your favorite tri sport? Big shock coming here - BIKING! What's your least favorite tri sport? Just because it is my weakest Swimming but I love all 3 Current challenges/obstacles? Hip/Leg issue preventing me from running further than 1.5 miles currently and a weak swim! What's your favorite part about training for tris? I love training and putting all 3 together makes it perfectly challenging! What's your least favorite part? Not having a real Tri-Bike How many races did you do last year? Local Bike/Running races How many races are you planning on this year? 1 Xterra (hopefully) and a lot of local bike/running races if my leg allows! Contemplating an ows race just for the experience but need to get stronger! WARNING! WARNING! COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT!!! COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT!!! Your team has been penalized 10 pages of posts! I was wondering if you were doing Leadville when I saw your 100 miler with the elevation. I am sure Tahoe-Sierra is just as brutal. Great fun there. You doing all the 24 hours solo or team? Solo! We're triathletes, we don't play well with other. No, seriously, I want to compete solo for total mileage. This is a very fun event in some excellent riding spots. Many local pros compete in these races too. Last year, Tinker Juarez won the series. Funny story: at the last event last year, not only did he lap me, but he was so far ahead in series mileage, he was able to stop half way through the race. The guy is a machine! |

You are a machine. Did you ever think of doing Leadville. I heard entry is a pain in the butt especially now that Lance has done it! I've look, but more interested in the Breck Epic. I really want to do La Ruta next year too. Both races had date conflicts for me this year. Not to mention the cost. I would only be able to do one a year. Edited by brick94513 2010-03-24 10:38 AM |

Master 1887 Brentwood, CA | Subject: RE: T.W.I.S.T.E.R. - March Winds Challenge wgraves7582 - 2010-03-24 5:18 AM I wish I were a better mechanic but it is fun trying new things and having the LBS to help you out if required! I'm self taught. Luckily, never had any financially costly mistakes, just a few time costly ones. I've built my last few bikes by myself. It is nice to maintain your own equipment: pride, cost, no waiting for serive, and being self-reliant. If I'm way out on a trail, at least I have the reassurance that I'll be able to rig something to get me home. I can recommend two books for anyone interested in trying things on their own: Park Tool Book Zinns: Art of Bike Maintenance |

Master 1887 Brentwood, CA | Subject: RE: T.W.I.S.T.E.R. - March Winds Challenge How long have you been doing tris? 2nd Season for XTERRA triathlons. This will be my first year doing some traditional (road) sprint and olympic distances. What got you into triathlon-ing? My captain at work ask me to do XTERRA Tahoe City with him. The obsession went from there. What are your goals this year? Qualify for XTERRA Nationals! What's your favorite tri sport? I like both the bike and run... So, I'll say my least favorite is the swim. What's your least favorite tri sport? Just no a very efficient swimmer. Current challenges/obstacles? Rehabing from ITBS and piriformis syndrome. Slow and steady. Finally able to start running again. What's your favorite part about training for tris? Pushing myself. I'm very competitive. I like being able to push myself harder and farther in the spirit of competition. What's your least favorite part? Cost! How many races did you do last year? Roughly a dozen: mixture of trail runs, MTB races, and triathlons. |

Weather was beautiful today. 40 miles on a mtn bike....that's hardcore x2 - crazy hard! That's pretty amazing. We don't really have any long trails like that around here. There is a 20+ mile ride that I like that usually takes me about 4 hours. We go up one canyon, up the mountain, along the ridge, then down the other side and out another canyon. Mostly single track except the last few miles coming out of the canyon that is paved. We usually hit about 60 on that part. Great ride but only half the distance of what you did yesterday. Its the longest local ride that I know of. |

Elite 3460 Slackerville, USA | Subject: RE: T.W.I.S.T.E.R. - March Winds Challenge I've started stepping up my workouts after a bad week so I can catch up. Did a run and a swim last night. I did the run first and then the swim. Now I know why they have the swim first in a tri. I could really feel it swimming. It was a good workout and I slept well. Getting up was a little tougher though. |

Subject: RE: T.W.I.S.T.E.R. - March Winds Challenge wgraves7582 - 2010-03-24 3:09 AM tri808 - 2010-03-24 2:58 AM Got in a nice interval ride today. There's a 1.75 mile stretch of road that a lot of people ride on because it's fairly empty. The only problem is the wind howls there...either straight on your back, your straight in your face...depending which way you're going. So of course I push hard with the wind, and recover coming back into it. I was holding about 28-30 mph for the stretch with the wind...but had to drop down to the 34 tooth crank to recovery on the way back. It's still fun just to rip it for a couple minute though. The few cars that do go by realize that they can't blow by you. There's usually a sheriff that tags guys for speeding on that road...and the limit is 35. A while back when riding with some other guys the sheriff was trying to shoot us with his radar gun...and he laughed as we passed by...I think we were only going 23 mph. That sounds like a blast - I don't think I would turn around back into the wind - I would just keep going! Well...you have to turn around...unless you want to ride into the ocean. It's a dead end stretch of road near the airport...which is why it's nice an empty. Two lanes going each way...so plenty of room for cars to pass around you. |

Elite 3460 Slackerville, USA | Subject: RE: T.W.I.S.T.E.R. - March Winds Challenge I'm going to take a shot at the questions, but I'm going to answer them the same way they did over on the dark side of this challenge. I'm gonna take it one question at a time. Maybe it will help make up some of that "10 page penalty." Question 1 How long have you been doing tris? Its confession time. I haven't actually done a tri yet. I first heard about tri's almost 30 years ago and put it on my bucket list. After doing a marathon a few years ago, I considered doing a tri and signed up on BT, but got distracted by something and am just coming back. So this is my first year. |

Elite 3460 Slackerville, USA | Subject: RE: T.W.I.S.T.E.R. - March Winds Challenge Question 2 What got you into triathlon-ing? Again, I heard about it almost 30 years ago and thought it was a challenge worth doing so I put it on my bucket list where it sat for many years until I hit 40 and thought I should start working on my list. Its five years later and I'm going to do some tri's this year. I'm enjoying the training enough that, even though I haven't done a tri yet, I want to stick with it for the rest of my life. |

Elite 3460 Slackerville, USA | Subject: RE: T.W.I.S.T.E.R. - March Winds Challenge Question 3 What are your goals this year? Since I haven't done any tri's yet, I don't have any specific goals other than to do 3 tri's, 3 marathons, and set a new marathon PR. Hopefully doing better on each tri. |

Elite 3460 Slackerville, USA | Subject: RE: T.W.I.S.T.E.R. - March Winds Challenge Question 4 What's your favorite tri sport? It varies. It used to be biking until I started running. Last fall I was really enjoying the swimming and was making a lot of progress (not hard when I couldn't really swim). Now I think running is my favorite again. |

Elite 3460 Slackerville, USA | Subject: RE: T.W.I.S.T.E.R. - March Winds Challenge Question 5 What's your least favorite tri sport? Swimming. I'm kind of stagnating in swimming right now and its frustrating. I've been considering joining a masters group in hopes of making some progress again. |
