With a looming deadline, you'd think I'd feel a little more motivated. Ummm yeah... I dont think I even know what Bioethics are... the ethics of something Biology related???
In this instance, I'm focusing on the ethics of medical research involving human subjects. Breaches of bioethics would be things like - testing on subjects without consent or taking advantage of marginalized subjects (prisoners, children, mentally disabled) to obtain consent. The protocols for human subjects research are tough to write. Much harder than animal protocols and those aren't that easy either. It seems the most difficult part is being able to balance risk and reward. Too much restriction kills innovation or makes it extremely costly. But how much risk can you take with human (or animal) subjects? Tricky stuff. It's always really tricky. With animals, you have to balance suffering with the benefit for the research. At least for the human aspect of my project, it's pretty easy. I get volunteers to agree to give blood samples and fill out a patient questionnaire. No names, just id numbers. I really hate the animal research part. |
