Member 179![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDSteve, Glad to hear you are doing well after your fall. I have done similar things. I fell off the trainer in my basement once with my feet still clipped in. It took some doing to figure out how to get up. I also could not make it up a hill once and decided to walk but since I was clipped in I just fell over. Oh well. It is hard to remember all that stuff about pedals when you are concerned about oncoming tractor trailers. Nation's is now at 73%. You might be right. You have a couple weeks before you have to decide. I am off to the YMCA. I know you listed what kind of weight training is recommended for triathletes but can you remind me where? I have looked and can't seem to find it. Thanks.

Veteran 283![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() New York | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDAnother not so good week training wise... need to get my priorities straight ... this whole work thing really needs to stop cutting into my training schedule. On a better note, since I haven't trained this week my hip is feeling a bit better so swimming tomorrow and maybe a spin class... just no treadmill. I will have to get outside to run. I think that the treadmill is doing in my hip but until I get outside and do some running I won't know if I can continue to blame the treadmill or if I need to learn how to run and go have my gait analyzed.

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDELLEN - Part of my travail at West point tri with my flat there was that I did the same thing -- struggled up a hill, with flay tire, looking for a place the gaurdrails wasn't. When I finally found it I pulled over and ----flop! Because my wounds heel so poorly nowadays, even though those ones were minor the signs are still there, 6+ months later! I will bide my time with Nation's until it hits 81, 84, or 87% --- and then I register! Or, I just might do it soon, knowing that it will make me nervous (due to committing $190 and risking getting hurt) but happy to make the commitment to another race. And as you know, once you commit to one it eliminates another one or many from further agonizing consideration. Win-win! |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDGEORGE - You can imagine how pleased I am to hear that your training plan counts time, not distance, at the outset. WHEW!!! (Good plan! Good plan!) Your self-description sounds like mine as of about this time in 2000. I too loved "swimming", but as an adult that was often a vague term that covered splashing around, letting the kids jump off my shoulders, and doing a few strokes just because I knew I could. And that was mostly as you say --- "move thearms and go". A huge advantage you have is that nowadays all of these videos are available on line. My biggest recommendation is www.swimsmooth.com. Not only is that site remarkable comprehensive, but also highly approachable. Moreover, the best one-on-one swim session I very had was with Paul himself, and I just have utter and complete faith in his knowledge and ability to get the concepts across. Another place to visit is www.totalimmersion.net, and there you'll finda very different instructional approach. It works for a lot of people, but requires a huge commitment to drillwork. You'll see that when you visit it. So, DEFINITELY look at some videos before your first swim. Go to the pool with just one or two areas to work on, and do that right from the start. Try to purge all of your previous swimming notions from your mind --- unless you are a bonafide talented swimmer! And really ---- just try one new technique tweak at a time; going for more than that will only muddy the waters. Have I mentioned my expereince at New York City Triathlon in '05, and what happened to me when I decdied to implement ALL of the advice I had received in a private lesson two days before? If not, ask and I'll tell you what can happen when you try to make too many technique changes at the same time! (Hint: It's not pretty!) |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDALEX - Rest is rest is rest is rest. The reasons can be all over the place -- sickness, burn-out, work commitments, familt commitments, social commitments --- but when somthing is physically wrong (that would include your hip) it doesn't matter the reason so long as the result allows healing to happen. And if the hip is feeling better, then your self-professedun-straight priorities have been beneficial -- we hope! Staying off the 'mill is smart, smart, smart --- at least for the next wee while. As for the swim, minimize your kicking. Someone in my last year's group is also having hip problems, and her strong swim kick seems to be exacerbating it. So, maybe drag out a pull buoy tomorrow and see if that makes the swim more hippingly tolerable. And I hope the spin class treat you well! I signed up for West Point Tri, bit still haven't decided on the du. If it gets USAT sanctioned, I will likely do it. I plan to phone USAT on Monday, as an email to the RD about sanctioning hasn't been answered. Have a good workout day tomorrow! |

Haha, not yet. The shop will take delivery on Wednesday. It's a special limited edition paint job to celebrate Taiwans 100th year, so they didn't have any in the shop. I do have my cash ready, my shoes and pedals are packed and ready to be taken to the bike shop. Oh yeah, almost forgot, while I was teaching my private class on Thursday the boys father came in and asked if I need a bike rack for my car. I said yes, so he showed it to me. It holds 3 bikes, and from what I understand, he paid a good sum for it. Probably somewhere in the 300 ~ 500 USD range. They won't let me pay them anything for it either. So not only will I have a new bike, but a way to get it to the nice bike paths that I can have a good, uninterrupted ride on! Edited by DuncanQH 2011-03-05 8:31 AM |

Master 2236![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Denison Texas | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDWay back I mentioned a tiny camper I was building and someone requested pics. I added a couple of basic pics to my album. It is still bare plywood, I will smooth this with bondo and sanding, seal the whole thing with a 50/50 blend of polyurethane and mineral spirits and paint with an epoxy paint. The windows and ac get trimmed out, the galley hatch gets latches and trim and door seals along with the door. The roof will get the poly mix sealant, bondo and fiberglass seam sealer then an elastomeric mobile home roof paint Those rusty little wheels will be replaced. The interior is wired for 110 and 12v systems with repurposed low voltage landscape lights as reading lights. The galley will be kept very basic, room for a coffee pot/small microwave or camp stove and cooler. There is also a small cabinet in the cabin, room for a tiny tv or radio or space heater. A 12v elec blanket would probably do the trick. I have both 12v and 110v outlets This was built on a salvaged pop up camper frame so I've kept it lite weight and small. It will sleep two comfortably if no one is over 6 feet tall. The interior is 6'x58" but the floor slopes up at a 45* at the front 12". This will get a foam cushion essentially carrying the mattress up like a pillow. In the coming weeks, if I don't get laid off, I will get it registered, finish the tail lights, paint and roof it and begin tinkering with the galley finishing touches. Ill take interior pics as t starts to look like something. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/photos/get-photo.asp?photoid=132912 Edited by Av8rTx 2011-03-05 10:11 PM |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDGEORGE - Okay, then! The NYC Tri is famous for its very fast swim, as it is scheduled to coincide with low tide and seeing as how the Hudson is a tidal river, that means the current is incredible strong. So strong that some pro and elite types do the 1500m in UNDER 10 minutes, and I rope is needed at the start dock sop that people can cling to it and not get swept downriver before the horn goes for their wave. As i have siad here before, my time for an oly swim (1500m or 0.93mile) is usually 30-32, and I have visions of doing it in '05 in 20-22, just because for many people the favorable tide does confer about a 10-minute faster-than-normal-oly swim. To increase my chances of this happening, two days before the race I scheduled a one-on-one session with Doug Stern, a very reputable swim coach. During the 60-minute session Doug pointed out about seven areas in which I needed work, places where there were glitches in my technique. So come run morning I'm all psyched, ready to jump in the Hudson and knock off a maybe-even sub-20 swim. Right from the start I began implementing the stuff Doug suggested to me, and not only as my mind wasn't at ease and I wasn't having fun (so much stuff to think about!!), but I didn't feel I was "flowing" the way I should; I felt out of synch and clutzy. So, the swim ended and as I scramble up the deck I looked at my watch -- 30 minutes!!! I was stunned and crestfallen, and figured maybe the swim had been measured REALLY long somehow......even though I knew it was the exact course of previous years. And my fears were supported when the results were posted and other guys near the top of my a.g. had done the swim in 20 or under. The lesson there? Don't try to fix everything at once!!!! At that point I was very experienced and had done about 37 previous triathlons and knew my way in the water, but I just got myself all tangled up in the attempt to implememtn all of Doug's suggestions. DOH!!!!! I liken it to cooking a gourmet multi-course meal, where the chef would not try to cook all six or seven dishes at the same time; that would just result in a disaster, right? So with your swimming, really, just work on one or two things each session, and definitely don't try to do two things on any given length. As oyu watch those videos and read about swimming, you might be intimidated by what all can be involved in swimming well -- or even half-well. That is probably true, but if you take the long view of it and are willing to pay your dues and be patient, the learning curve becomes less steep in fairly short order. If you decide to do the race in April you mentioned a few days ago, the one with a 440m(?) swim, you can do that with your still-evolving skills. One race in which you maybe let go of attempts at perfect technique shouldn't hurt your swim development at all --- just as long as you get back to serious, focused, "mindful" swimming the next time you hit the pool! I've never golfed, but lots of people say that swimming is like golfing in that both can require a mental checklist of from and technique comnsiderations, all the time. Finally, I went back to NYC Tri in '09 with no agenda other than to just swim as I have swum for xxxxx meters before..............and my swim time was 19:12 or so. I just did what I do, and let myself work WITH the current. Halleloo! |

Veteran 244![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDgdsemiller - 2011-03-03 4:42 PM I have a question on swimming. I start Monday and I have 1 question, how do you keep up with your distance. The pool I will be using is 25 yards so that is a lot of laps to keep track off, along with the swimming.. I need to find an underwater ticker that I can click on every lap. I have a really had short memory. I will do a lap and then start thinking of other things and next thing you know I forgot what lap I was on...
I use a pencil and paper at the edge of the pool. I know it is an old method but it works wonderfully for me. Each slash represents one set, what ever it may be. I have my workout printed on the sheet also. it works for me and best of all the supplies are relatively free. |

Veteran 244![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDI got my first long ride of the year in this past Saturday night. It was the worst bike ride ever.
The day started out great though, I was about to hold 24-27mph for the first 30 miles of the ride. We had 2 regroup points at 15 and 30 miles. Our whole group (8 of us) did not realize we had a tail wind the whole 30 miles down to the beach, we kept playing cat and mouse trying to push the pace and generally have fun. 2 people turned back at the 15 mile mark due to time constraints. 2 more turned back at the 24 mile mark again for time constraints. At the 30 mile mark we finally hit the beach, there are bathrooms, water fountains at the end of the trail, at this point we also ran in to another group from my tri club of about 6 - 8 people. They started half way down the trail(giving them a 30 mile round trip). We all stuck together as we headed back up the trail. I was the first one to break with a right calf cramp, I pulled off and stretched out which helped but the group was long gone at this point. I hopped back on the bike and kept pedaling my heart out. I looked down at my gps because it was screaming at me for a heart rate of 210, I hit the silence button and changed the screen to see what my speed was. Much to my surprise with a heart rate of 210 I was only moving at a speed of 11mph. I just realized I still have 24 miles left of this crap. Just as I thought it could not get any worse the head wind picked up, I went from traveling at 11 mph to 9 mph. About at the 40 mile mark both my calves, quads, hamstrings all cramped at the same time. Thats right all six muscles cramped at the same time. I had no idea what to do, I could not get off my bike because my quads wanted to cramp on the down stroke and my hams and calves wanted to cramp on the upstroke. So I basically I limped home for the next 20 miles at about 10 mph. I caught up to 2 more guys from the club that had hit their walls as well. We were placing bets who was going to fall over and die first. They made the ride a bit more enjoyable, but not better. All in all a BAD day on the bike is better than the BEST day indoors. I have been limping around the house all day today. I am hoping by tomorrow to be able to walk good enough to hit the pool. |

Champion 10618![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDDANIEL - Wel, that certainly explains the blistering pace on the way out --- the tailwind on the out turned into a headwind on the return. The wind giveth, and the wind taketh away! The older I get, the more diligent I become about trying NEVER EVER to do the return of a long ride into a fierce wind -- or, really, any wind at all. I ahve had some bad encounters with wind, but absolutely nothing like yours last night. Mercy! I live in flat farmlands, and the wind is always a factor; especially so in the spring. As muich as I am anxious to get outside againn, I know what awaits me. I try to kiss up to and make nice with Madame Zephyr, but don't reallt get as far as I would like. It's really a pretty one-sided relationship, with the wind regularly having its way with me. I have a much better relationship with hills, overall. Hope your muscle groups start to unseize real soon, and even if they don't go to the pool anyhow. Just limit your kicking, and enjoy the therapeutic effects of the water! |

Veteran 142![]() ![]() Charlotte, NC | Subject: RE: Got Your Mojo WORKIN'! group - CLOSEDHey Gang! Sorry I have been MIA for a while....I've been checking in periodically but haven't been able to really sit down and chat. The past couple of weeks have been brutal.... We have a 9yo black lab/collie mix who we rescued and of course she is my shadow! We have been through alot with her over the past 5 years. She has torn both her ACL's in her hind legs and has udergone extensive surgery to replace those...all went well. However about 2 years ago she developed a fatty tumor on her hind leg. Our vet said we shouldn't worry about it too much as this is common in labs. Well about 2 weeks ago I noticed it was getting bigger and was not jiggly like before. We quickly took her in and he scheduled surgery this past Thursday. Well she came out of surgery ok on Thursday although it took about 2-1/2 hours to try and get all of the tumor. He was successful in getting most of it, but she is pretty uncomfortable right now. My wife and I are having to change bandages every day and trying to keep her as well rested as possible. Our vet said hopefully these next couple of days of pain will go quickly and she can get back to normal soon. Hopefully the tumor takes it time growing back (which it will) because they will not be able to do the same surgery on that leg again. Anyway, I've been trying to squeeze in workouts when I can, but it's been hard....gotta take care of my little girl!!! I hope everyone's training is going well and I'll check back in when I can!
