Blanda - 2012-09-15 9:59 AM A little over a month ago I struggled with a 3 mile run on the track at my gym. Ran it at a 9:01/mile pace. Today I ran it at an 8:34/mile pace and it felt really good even after 10 miles Wednesday, and 5 miles yesterday in the blistering heat. Ran today at 5ish, same as that 9:01/mile run, but with the that run I had done very little the rest of that week compared to this one. Very exciting for me! I think the speed work is helping! My legs aren't fatiguing so quickly anymore.

Oh, and 27 miles this week! It's a huge deal for me because I've actually enjoyed it even though it's been so stinkin' hot and hard!

Very nice!  Progress is so fun.

Thanks for the soreness tips from everyone. I'm definitely going to get a roller and start using that, and I'll look into the trigger point therapy.

Did a 2 1/2 hour ride last night and an 11-mile run this morning, so with my long swim tomorrow (I was supposed to do it Friday, but put it off. I couldn't do 80 minutes before school...) I'll have fought through the toughest part of my training plan! I honestly feel better after weeks like this than I do after a race; a race is great, and they're what I train for. But when I look back and see what I did over the past few weeks, I'm extremely proud of that. Good times!

WTG Blanda!  That smells like serious progress... or is it sweat... well, whatever, congrats!  20+ mi/week running always is a good week in my book.  Nate, one of the great things about triathlon training is that usually if you've got some nagging issue you can pick up the training in one of the other disciplines.  Hope the recovery goes well.

So, 10K was 50.06.  Headcold and a pretty intense few weeks of training probably kept me from a better time.  First 3+ miles I was on pace for 48, but just couldn't keep it going.  I figured what the heck, I'd go for it today since I wasn't feeling great anyway.  I will say, I'm not sure there's a much worse feeling in racing than seeing the big time clock clicking past your goal time and knowing you're just going to miss it.  Been pretty spent since the race, so I don't think I left much on the course.  Hammy is a bit sore too.  Need to watch that.

My father in law won his age group (well, technically, he WAS his age group).  But more importantly, he did better than expected and was all pysched up!  Love seeing that!

Good luck to the rest of the racers this weekend.  Planning a 50 mi ride in the mountains tomorrow am.

Blanda-that's a great week of running. Way to go speedy!

Jamie-excellent training.  You need to look back at your early weeks of training and see how far you have come. Really impressive.

Stu-nice work!  Sorry no PR...but given your training and the headcold it sounds like you ran well. I'm with you on feeling beat up after a running race.  Just seems to take more out of me than even a much longer triathlon.

Stu-whats wrong with the CAVS today?  I'm afraid West Virginia will score 70 on my JMU Dukes!

Stu mentioned seeing the clock at the end of the race. Last December I did my first 5k in a quite awhile with my son. I told him my super longshot goal was to break 20 min. Really thought 21 was more likely.  At the end of the course you made a sharp right turn then it was about 50 yards to the finish.  I knew I was going to be close as I got close to the finish. My son was right at the turn screaming for me to push it. I looked at the clock as I turned the corner and knew I was either going to just make it/miss the 20 min. mark.  Didn't actually know until final results were posted but in the pics of me heading to the finish it looked like I was having a stroke....arms everywhere, face contorted and eyes on the clock......19:58.89  As of now I am still retired from 5K racing....HURT way too much.

Once again, hats off to you IM distance guys. Did 65 mile bike this morning follwed by a short brick run. Can't imagine trying to run on legs like that after another 47 miles on the bike. You guys ROCK!

Roll Tide!

Good morning all.  Headed out for a long run.  Legs still fatigued from yesterday. Going to try to keep it real easy so I can still function the rest of the day.  I think my wife got tired of seeing me laying on the couch yesterday. Have a good Sunday!

Just got back from my long run. It was very humid today. I rewarded myself with a 20 lb ice bath, coke, chocolate milk and Gatorade. Now I feel sick from all of the sugar! lol... A few hours in compression gear and then it will be time to hit the pool. Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Dang Jason, you are one fast dude!  Great race.

Just back from a 50 mile bike ride on the Skyline Drive.  Grey day, but great ride.  The person I was riding with even saw 4 bears sitting on the stone wall... though they were gone by the time I caught up :-)

Randy, I have no idea what is going on with the Hoos, but from the comments on the boards, you'd think no college team should ever lose a game.  Sigh.  Always tough against Paul Johnson's triple option, especially with a young defense.  Personally, I'm mostly worried about why our O-Line isn't doing better.  But I went to school there in the Bestwick years, so our 2-1 record has already surpassed most year's total wins during my tenure.  I don't get too down on about it - I just enjoy seeing them be competitive - which they weren't today.  Always next week :-)  But I don't have the Alabama expectations either.

Race update:

Consensus is that bike was 2K short so I did not actually go sub one hour for 40K. Dang!

Consensus is that run was about 0.3 miles long so I crushed 40 minutes for a 10K.

Only 97 racers in the Olympic race. The other 500 racers were doing the sprint so I did not even crack the top 10%.

Despite all of the above, I now have a 2:04:17 "Olympic" race to my name. I'll take it.

Two hours after I had finished, there was no indication that they were anywhere near handing out awards. I needed to get home and see my family so no chance to stand on the podium and get my prize. Oh well.

I feel remarkably good considering the effort level put out this morning.

Congrats Jason! That's a great result. The work definitely is paying off.I'm a bit under the weather with some sort of throat infection. At least it s keeping me from putting on too many post-IM pounds! Hopefully back to training soon as I'd like to race one more tri this season before I switch to my usual Fall run-focus.

Good Morning All,

Somewhat of a rough weekend ... self inflicted! Had Poker Night on Saturday and my kids decided that sleeping until 7am yesterday morning was long enough .. :-) I am signed up for the Dallas Half Marathon on December 9th and I decided that its time to join a half marathon training group. Did a 5.5 miles run yesterday afternoon which felt really good. I am kind of excited to actually have a structured program put together by a running coach. Tonight is going to be gait analysis and overall check on running form.

Played 90 minutes of racquetball this morning ... its going to be a good day ... ! I am feeling great! How is everyone else doing?

Jason, awesome performance!!!!

I just got in a 11 mile run before starting my drive to San Diego.  I am bringing my swim gear in hopes to get some swims in at the local pools.  The Navy 32nd street has two 50 meter pools within a mile of each other.  Plus there is another 50 meter pool just across the Bay!  I'll have to see how it goes.  Most of my time is devoted to driving and getting my son all set for his first year of college at UCSD.  So exciting but at the same time a little difficult to let him go on his own.

My goal this week as mentioned is to try to maintain the fitness I've built this year so when I get back I can resume my IM training plan.  My concern is how my body will feel after 30 some hours of driving.  We do plan to break it up into 12 hour days, with rest at hotels in the evening.  At that time I will stretch and get running done if I'm up to it.

Have a great day all!!!   Jim

I'm tired today....mostly my legs.  Last week was a pretty big training week for me at 12+ hours. Today is a swim at lunch then 45 min. recovery ride tonight.  Looks like another 12+ hour training week. Hopefully, things will dial back a bit as I head into my last race of the season, a sprint, on Oct. 6th.

I'm trying to decide what to do during the "off season".  Maybe work on a half marathon or 2?

This is going to be my question come November. I have two races between now and then, but what to do afterwards?

Randy -- interested why you are doing big weeks right now?  Anyway, as long as you don't go over the edge, the accumulated fatigue will eventually turn into great fitness (once you back off!).

I've pretty much sorted out the next several months.  I'm going to give Rev3 SC a miss and focus on a half-marathon in December.  I slightly (but only slightly) re-injured my foot at IMWI, but I know how to deal with it, now, so I'm not concerned.  I'll get run-focused here pretty soon.  My last tri of the year will be a local race that they're calling 'sprinternational' (1K swim, 21 mile bike, 7K run).  I don't expect much as I'll be carrying fatigue from IMWI, but I want to do one more race before 'shutting it down' for the season.  I think that Jamie and Nate are doing this race as well?  If so, we definitely need to meet up!

Next spring, I'm going to do Raleigh 70.3 and and Florida 70.3.  I'm already excited about prepping for those races.

What to do after the season is over? Well I'm going to take a few weeks off after Florida. Then focus on building for next year. I'm signed up for a few half marathons during the winter. We've already planned out next years season.

Michael-I like the new picture.  You will smoke the HIM races next year....another Vegas trip in the cards? Cards....get it...Vegas. Yeah, weak...sorry.

I'm a little curious about why I have the big weeks at this point of the season.  Going to talk with my coach about it but actually I'm OK with it.  Nothing too overwhelming just a bit more volume than my usual weeks. Even though I am just doing sprint/olympic distance I tend to have at least one long run 1.5 hour or more and one or more long rides 2.5-3+ hours a month. I suspect it contributes to my overall endurance and may help build up some fatigue resistance. (It also helps me remember why I don't do IM distance)  No long runs or rides this week but a bit longer swims. The weather knocked out today's swim so its unlikely I will get 3.5 hours of swimming in this week. ( happy/sad...can't decide).

Let us know what coach says.  I've got the impression that the coaching has been working for you -- I'm always happy to learn from success!

Yeah, Vegas is in the back of my mind.  Or should I say, it's in the cards???  Last year I won about 3K playing poker (paid for flights and hotel then blew the rest on amazing meals -- 99% of Vegas poker players are easy marks!)  We'll see, but I'm willing to put it out there that I'm going to try to hit <4:30, and hopefully that'll be enough.

Ok, a bit off track but triathlon related.  You often see threads on the main forum about men shaving their legs for cycling/triathlon.

For the guys-who shaves their legs (legs stick with just legs) and how long were you doing triathlon before you started?

Ladies, what do you think? Like it don't like it? Couldn't care less?

Me, I did 2 seasons of racing before getting the razor out. So, since my 4th season is drawing to a close I guess I've been doing it for almost 2 years. I only keep them shaved during race season. I don't think my wife is crazy about it as I hear little comments periodically that lead me to that conclusion.  My kids give me a hard time about it. Funny think is it was almost 2 months after I started before either of my kids even noticed.

Yeah, deep down I think my wife likes it.  She just doesn't like having to constantly test her self-control   I',m sure you all believe that!
