Holy Mackerel, Joe, you are gonna burn through your new shoes! Was this another brick?

I was listening to BBC as they were going over the game, and while they were broadcasting they went to rain delay. I chuckled - what timing!

Good luck getting Cole the stuff he needs. Ugh, how trying. I can't imagine how hard that must be.

Yay for ONE-derland!!!

That's gonna be some race you guys are gonna crash!

Um, er, uh, not much else. Seriously got my running mojo today. I did 10 min runs, which is a big step up, and they felt awesome. Yay! Kept a nice steady pace, really settled in to it. Looking forward to the next few weeks of ever-increasing time/distance!

Since we've had some crappy-school stories lately, I'm gonna share a good-school story, k?

My BFF has two daughters. The oldest is 8, in third grade. She goes to this ULTRA crunchy school, they are vegan, all out in the woods, super liberal, do ultra fun stuff. PLUS, they are wicked hard, very good educational experience. Definitely NOT a softie school, their kids come out of there light years ahead of others, go on to do amazing things (like, say, Ambassador of the US, among others...). Oh yeah, and there are 161 kids. Total. K-12. Third grade is one of the largest, with about 12-15 kids.

One of the reasons G is at the school is for their liberal values. See, my BFF and G's father got divorced last year when my BFF came out. Knowing the public school system, everyone knew that the safest place - both emotionally and physically - would be at a small school with strong values of taking care of each other and respecting everyone. One where the teachers are extremely involved in every thing that goes on. One where they don't let bullying or taunting or any such slide.

Well, they got their first test. G came home all out of sorts, and her father finally got out of her that her best friend, one of the most popular girls in third grade, had said in front of everyone, "Your mom is GAY" and gotten everyone laughing. They all laughed along with her because, well, she's popular, and they're kids, and it's what happens. G, of course, was completely humiliated, and devastated that this girl she THOUGHT was her best friend would do this. Kids - it's what they do.

Well, my BFF heard about all of this and was on the phone at 10 pm that night (when she heard about it) to the teacher. She couldn't get through to him, but called the school ASAP the next morning. She didn't get to the teacher, but to the school counselor/psychologist/emotion-watching-person. Turns out, lo and behold, third grade had their class meeting that morning, and this would be an excellent learning opportunity. The whole class talked openly about what had happened, and how things should go down in the future (i.e., laughing NOT COOL, taunting NOT COOL). Then, G and the other girl met one-on-one with the counselor lady to talk over what had happened, and she helped G say how hurt she was by the comments. By the end of the day, everything was back to normal, all feelings restored, and they were off to the playground. Kids - it's what they do.

How freaking cool is that? Here's a situation that, in a larger school, would go entirely unnoticed, or worse yet, noticed and ignored by the teachers. I suffered through an enormous amount of bullying for every reason possible, far too often at the hands of the teachers. Even when the teachers weren't actively participating, they were watching and letting it happen. And yet, these kids learned that it's okay to stand up for yourself and say, "Hey, that hurt my feelings, you need to apologize." And they learned that it's okay to apologize. And they learned that it's okay to make mistakes. Kids push the boundaries of what is acceptable. They are working out their social pecking order. They are trying to figure out where they stand in the world and where everyone else does, too. Maybe the other girl has heard from somewhere that being gay is bad. But I'm just guessing that having to look her friend in the tear-filled eyes taught her that, no matter how you feel about gay people, taunting is never okay.

Go crunchy school!

Slugger - 2008-10-24 12:39 AM . bondgirl, howzitgoin?

It's goin good. I'm all runned up. Looks like the spread sheet is capped at 100%. So I'm done!

Wanna run some for me? Eh, keep going - get a head start on November. Then you can cheat and fill in times for the holidays. LOL! You guys have anything like Thanksgiving goin' on in November? Or is it nuthin' 'til December?

We don't have Thanksgiving. We have the Melbourne Cup, which is the first Tuesday in November and basically it's a horse race that everyone get excited about, drinks too much and throws away their money. We do get a day off work and school tho' so it's all good.

Then it's Christmas which is during our major school holidays- my son gets nearly 8 weeks off. What do you do with an 8yo for 8 weeks?

Only you Victorians get a day off work - over here in Perth we have to bring a TV set into work or listen to the radio in between working LOL!!!

Needless to say he doesn't enjoy the whole spectator thing. Never mind at least he doesn't put any obstacles in my path to keep competing.

My hubby was not so supportive last year. At first it was kinda cute because he said how much he missed me, blah blah blah. But then it caused a lot of problems. Now he is a LOT better. I try to do most of my workouts in the mornings (tough; I'm not a morning person), but the other week I was riding the bike trainer at night and he saw how sweaty I was and he got me a cold paper towel and put some ice in my water. Awwww.

My husband gets annoyed at me for exercising so much. Basically its because I am out doing things on my own and not at home paying attention to him LOL! But when I wasn't doing any exercise he was on at me for being unfit. Men are just plain annoying & whingy and hard to please!!!! LOL. I do love him, really

Offthegrid - 2008-10-24 10:25 PM  I remember my favorite Christmas card ever. It was on an Internet forum and everyone who wanted traded addresses, so you got cards from all over the world. One of the cards from Australia had Santa in shorts sitting in a beach chair with a pina colada.

Yep, thats a pretty standard Aussie christmas card LOL! Its always hot here on that day, and most people try to do a traditional English spread with the ham and the turkey, the kitchen is like a sauna!!! But we also do a lot of salads and seafood

Offthegrid - 2008-10-27 11:11 PM I really want to go swimming right now. I'm pretty slow yet, but I really love it. I guess that's the thing about triathlon for me; even though I'm very slow, I truly love all three of the disciplines.

ebshot - 2008-10-27 11:38 PM On the Operation Help Cole front, I have to call the audiologist again to try to schedule his appointment.  Hope they are in the office!  Gonna give the pediatrition another day before I call them.  School meets this week but I guess it is just an informal meeting and I am not invited. Not sure how I feel about that....

There is a meeting about your son and you're not invited??? That really sucks. I X2 what everyone else says - invite yourself along anyway!!!

We shared a bottle of wine and an icecream sundae at the cinema. I woke up this morning really grumpy and I had bad dreams. I think eating bad food and drinking really can affect your moods.

Well there you go. I learnt something today! Actually some place give you the Monday off as well, cos whats the point of going to work? My son get the Monday and Tuesday off school. Four day weekend, cool! We can't go away tho', it's my sons 8th birthday and we have the whole family(well, those that are speaking to each other at least) coming round for festivities.

Funny kid I have we asked him if he wanted a party and he said, no, he only wants a family thing!

Yay for horsie-back racing! I married into a grandson of Secretariat. Spitting image of his granddaddy, but didn't get the speed. He was a pretty miserable failure on the track, but he's the bestest boy in the whole world, and I love him (and miss him) dearly. He's a cutie, that's for sure!

Oh, excuse me - I should say he's handsome, not "a cutie." He's very regal, like a king. Or so he wants you to believe.

My hubby used to be like that. I was supposed to at home swooning over him, I think. He soon figured out that he was never going to win that game and I was alot easier to live with if I got my training in. now he just rolls his eyes at my adventures. He thinks I'm quite mad. Could he be right?
