New Haven, CT | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED uhcoog - 2011-03-31 8:47 AM Tapering makes me feel lazy. This is when I realize one that I'm a training junkie and two how much of my routine it's become. I feel like a slacker and my groove is totally thrown. i've always performed worse after tapers than with no tapers. i am giving up tapers this year for an extra day off and seeing how that works. |

I'm cutting this taper short. Basically I pulled back maybe 20% of the workout intensity M-Th, no lifting, and I'm taking Friday and Saturday off before racing Sunday. Mentally tapers just beat me up and I still feel blah. Maybe if races are going to continue to be scheduled for my long workout day I'll just treat them as such. I would do a short, race pace effort on Saturday -- no more than 20 minutes, just to keep your groove. |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED I know March isn't over yet, but they started this forum in the main Triathalon Forum. What were your March totals. I know for sure some of you will have huge numbers. Nice job everyone. April should be a big month for me, pending snow of course. That'll be the only thing that forces me back on that damn boring trainer. My pace will look slow for the bike hours I put in becasue some of it is mountain biking.

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED I would second that. For years, I would always run til I was exhausted and soaked in sweat. I mentally felt like if it wasn't hard I wasn't getting a good workout and therefore was always running way too hard. Not that you have to spend $100, but I went and had HR testing done and I was told to be running between 145-155 HR. That meant me running at about 4.3 mph . . . sounds snail slow, I know, but it is what I try to focus on now adays because quick frankly those previous years workouts were probably 170-180-190's and just not being done right or smart. I have had lots of people hammer me on HR training. Once you find your zones you will know what you can do -- for me 145-155 I can run forever, 165 I can hold for a long time (race pace or near), but 170-180's I will shut down and cramp up eventually. As for the 1/2 I did Sunday, I started the race in the 170's and spent most of it around 177 and did the cardiac drift into the 180's toward the end . . . spelled disaster. I needed to stick with my plan and I didn't. I got caught up in the race. I probably got away with with as long as I did because of all the nutrition I was taking . . . DO NOT DO AS I DID

I took today off, so my March is done:
Came in lower than I wanted for the run and swim, but beat my bike goal at least. |

Member 113 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED bwingate - 2011-03-31 6:55 PM You might be running too fast. Does it happen every time or only when you seem to be exerting yourself? Try going out 1 minute per mile slower next time (it will feel REALLY slow) and see what happens. If you're a newbie, it could just be that you are out of shape and trying to hard. Make the run enjoyable and comfortable and the speed and endurance will follow.
It could be actually. I do my run training with a group, so im never really running at a speed i would train at myself. Tuesday nights are interval nights so we move from walk to jog to pace and its when i start pace the stitch comes on. Similarly, Thurs nights are longer run sessions and im trying to keep up with a group (when i train alone i have a very slow pace so i really try to keep up when in the groups). |

I missed 2 bike workouts this month (sister's baby & travel) & this week's strength training sessions. Overall I'm pretty happy with my month. Next month's run total ought to be much higher. I was easing into it again this month. Oly training plan starts Monday. I can't imagine it will have me doing much more than this. |

You focused on the run -- nothing wrong with that. You have plenty of time to build towards Muncie. |

Master 2538 Albuquerque | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED Weight off my shoulders today: Bad timing, today being April Fools, but I assure you I'm not joking. My Dad had prostate cancer in 2002, which required surgery to remove the prostate and after that he was deemed cancer-free. Follow up PSA tests showed a level of 0, which is what it should be, especially with not prostate. A couple of weeks ago, his blood work came back with a PSA of 13...YIKES! He met with an oncologist and they scheduled a bone scan and a head/neck/torso scan this past Monday. His follow up visit was today, where he got the sorta-good news. well, not bad news, all things considered. They didn't find anything on the scans, no tumors or anything. They did some a couple of spots on his lungs, but they think that's from childhood pneumonia he had when he was 3 or 4. Or possibly tuberculosis from the past. His blood work came back normal, except the PSA is still showing 11.8 They are scheduling him to have a PET scan of the prostate area (well, where it was) sometime next week to see if maybe there's just some microscopic cells left behind or something. If they find something, it will likely be radiation treatment for it (unless something dire pops up I guess). If they find nothing, the oncologist is recommending hormone treatments. So not bad... |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group - CLOSED abqti, Man, I hope everything turns out ok. Cancer is the one disease I wish they'd find a cure for. I think I am destined to have prostate cancer. My grandfather had prostate cancer, but died of lung cancer. 3 Uncles on that same side have had prostate cancer (one recently died of lung cancer also) and my father has had a very small amount of prostatce cancer show in his tests, but nothing of concern yet. With that said, they all smoke and drink way too much, and I don't do any of that. Maybe somehow, it'll pass by me!!! I'm only 33 (34 next week), but should get tested soon even though they reccomend age 40 for testing. Good luck with everything and keep us posted. |
