Here is my race report.  Or was that a dream I had while stuck inside a crock pot?

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=448873

Holy good Lord!  88 degree water?  That almost never exists in this neck of the woods...and man, I am glad about that!  You really accomplished a lot by just finishing this race.  I would think that biking slower in that heat would really kill me, not to mention running in it also.  Great job buddy.

Ouch!!!  Jonathan I'm sorry.  I've done this twice over a 20 year period and kick myself!

That's a reasonably nice frame...but if you want to save $$ you can get the same size in a budget aluminum frame for as little as $150 or so.  If you specifically shop for a frame that takes the same size seatpost, same bottom bracket and same headset type then you won't need to buy any additional parts.

So, I had the Alta Alpina Century yesterday.

Some basic stats:

7h 03m 54s109.54 miles15.50 Mi/hr4709 calories

Approximate Feet of Climbing: 11788

Had a great Race!

Averaged 9mph-11mph on the climbs.

Averaged 40mph-45mph on decents. Top decent speed: 47.65mph

Averaged 20mph-21mph on flats.

My Nutrition was spot on. No issues. No mechanical problems.

I just took my time and didn't push it too hard. I had plenty in the tank afterwards and probably could have knocked off 30+ minutes easily. I had a couple rest breaks which added to the time. I was worried I was going to have a hard time with my new work schedule (new sleep hours & training hours) so I went at it with the attitude of just a leisurely ride.

No training today, just going to rest. I'll be back at it tomorrow.

Awesome ride!!!!  You rock!!!

Not much going on around here right now.  I did a fabulous track tempo workout on Sunday.  I warmed up with some easy running for 20 minutes and then ran 25 minutes at tempo HR which made me run sub 8 minute miles the whole time.  I cooled down by running easy for another 15 minutes.  I was so excited about that workout!  It makes up for my lackluster cycling.

I saw this swim focused strength workout on the most recent email from USAT.  It looks pretty good, however, I can't visualize one of the exercises.  Anyone care to decipher it for me?

Tricep Rotations

  • Get a slightly heavier weight than you used for the crunches (5-15 lbs.).
  • Standing up right with good posture, holding the weight in one hand, bring the arm up so that the upper arm is out to the side and parallel to the ground with the elbow bent at a 90 degree angle.
  • Keeping the upper arm as still as possible, lower the forearm until it is parallel to the ground, then bring it back up to its previous upright position.
  • Repeat 10-20 times with each arm.

They got the name wrong.  That should not be called tricep rotations since it doesn't involve the tricep muscle.  It's an exercise for the rotator cuff for shoulder stabilization.

Also, their description is flawed because it says to start with the forearm parallel to the ground, then lower it until it's parallel to the ground...

It's basically this exercise, but done standing:

Just a quick note.  I was out of town visiting my parents this week and could only run.  My IT band is still giving me FITS!!!  Good news though, I did get my wife a Scott road bike and I got myself a Cervelo P-1.  Both were old merchandise that has never been used.  Gosh the P-1 is hard to ride.  I about crashed it, testing it out.  I'm not used to having to move my hands to find the breaks ...lol

I hope my wife gets interested in tri's.  She has the running part (she is signing up for an Ultra)  and can swim good.  Biking is her weakness.

I look forward to catching up w/ everyone soon.

Karl I missed this one. I hope you and your wife are enjoying the new bikes. The P-1 is a good bike and you will get used to riding it. Hope the IT band is feeling better.

Jonathan my sympathies on your fiance's bike and it's probably the last thing that you guys needed to have happen. I hope you can get a new frame without breaking the bank.

My husband had a fun mountain bike ride.  He fell off a bridge into blackberry brambles and officially made sure that our son was going to be an only child.  Sigh.  He's in the shower right now and will be going to bed soon.  Yep.  We are perfect for each other.

Thought you all might appreciate this pic of the little friends I swam with last night. I swam at my friends pond and these cute little guys greated me as I stepped on the dock. Of course I had to feed them before I started out! I might not be the fastest junkie but no one can question my dedication . The swim was difficult because the pond was way too hot. The temp guage that is about 6 inches deep had the water temp at 92 degrees, the surface water was even warmer than that. I could only do about 3 laps around the pond before stopping to get a drink.

Hope everyone has a wonderful 4th of July. I am headed out on a bike ride this morning then we're off to take the kids to the parade in town and then to the Cardinal Baseball game. Nothing more Amercian than baseball right?

Happy Independance Day!

Can anyone tell me if its normal for my heart rate to be higher in the heat? My workouts these past couple of days have been rough.

abergdol - 2012-07-04 2:52 PM Happy Independance Day!

I'll give you the simple answer and maybe someone else can expand.  Yes it's normal.  In fact, it's not a bad idea to adjust your pace, add extra rest, etc during the heat since your body has to overcompensate for the added stress of working out in the heat.

It is indeed HOT today!  Since it rained yesterday (and I guess it looked like overnight too?) the humidity is a killer!  I got in a swim and run this morning, and I'm hoping to also get a bike ride in too (in fact, I must to keep up with the tdf challenge! Laughing) but just looking at what the temp is outside is not very tempting!  According to weather.com the high of the day is supposed to come at 5p!  Heat index is already at 100... Undecided

Well...we have done some shopping around and we're still trying to find the frameset we are looking for.  Unfortunately the seatpost also got sheared right off...so that wasn't salvageable.  There's a bikeshop that just had a guy upgrade his frame and it's a size 51 also, so we may go check that out.  It'll probably be my early wedding present/birthday present for her.  Sucks during wedding saving time.  Luckily she has a bike for the weekend.  Thanks for the sympathetic comments.  She's still seriously ticked off (as I would be of course).
