Elite 4372![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Connecticut | Subject: RE: VIllanous Vampires Team ThreadSlugger - 2008-10-28 1:19 AM Since we've had some crappy-school stories lately, I'm gonna share a good-school story, k? My BFF has two daughters. The oldest is 8, in third grade. She goes to this ULTRA crunchy school, they are vegan, all out in the woods, super liberal, do ultra fun stuff. PLUS, they are wicked hard, very good educational experience. Definitely NOT a softie school, their kids come out of there light years ahead of others, go on to do amazing things (like, say, Ambassador of the US, among others...). Oh yeah, and there are 161 kids. Total. K-12. Third grade is one of the largest, with about 12-15 kids. One of the reasons G is at the school is for their liberal values. See, my BFF and G's father got divorced last year when my BFF came out. Knowing the public school system, everyone knew that the safest place - both emotionally and physically - would be at a small school with strong values of taking care of each other and respecting everyone. One where the teachers are extremely involved in every thing that goes on. One where they don't let bullying or taunting or any such slide. Well, they got their first test. G came home all out of sorts, and her father finally got out of her that her best friend, one of the most popular girls in third grade, had said in front of everyone, "Your mom is GAY" and gotten everyone laughing. They all laughed along with her because, well, she's popular, and they're kids, and it's what happens. G, of course, was completely humiliated, and devastated that this girl she THOUGHT was her best friend would do this. Kids - it's what they do. Well, my BFF heard about all of this and was on the phone at 10 pm that night (when she heard about it) to the teacher. She couldn't get through to him, but called the school ASAP the next morning. She didn't get to the teacher, but to the school counselor/psychologist/emotion-watching-person. Turns out, lo and behold, third grade had their class meeting that morning, and this would be an excellent learning opportunity. The whole class talked openly about what had happened, and how things should go down in the future (i.e., laughing NOT COOL, taunting NOT COOL). Then, G and the other girl met one-on-one with the counselor lady to talk over what had happened, and she helped G say how hurt she was by the comments. By the end of the day, everything was back to normal, all feelings restored, and they were off to the playground. Kids - it's what they do. How freaking cool is that? Here's a situation that, in a larger school, would go entirely unnoticed, or worse yet, noticed and ignored by the teachers. I suffered through an enormous amount of bullying for every reason possible, far too often at the hands of the teachers. Even when the teachers weren't actively participating, they were watching and letting it happen. And yet, these kids learned that it's okay to stand up for yourself and say, "Hey, that hurt my feelings, you need to apologize." And they learned that it's okay to apologize. And they learned that it's okay to make mistakes. Kids push the boundaries of what is acceptable. They are working out their social pecking order. They are trying to figure out where they stand in the world and where everyone else does, too. Maybe the other girl has heard from somewhere that being gay is bad. But I'm just guessing that having to look her friend in the tear-filled eyes taught her that, no matter how you feel about gay people, taunting is never okay. Go crunchy school! That is great! Kids can be so darn mean! It's nice to see a school that goes above and beyond to protect the kids and teach them that it's not okay. Hopefully that lesson will stick with those kids for a lifetime. |

I was thinking of trying Steelman. It'd be my first Oly. I heard the bike was hilly but the run was pretty flat. A friend and I also plan to go up to Lake Placid to spectate and volunteer. She plans to sign up for 2010.Offthegrid - 2008-10-23 8:42 AM I asked my parents if they would come to see me if I did an Ironman race in the future that wasn't too far away. My mom said: "Why would we want to go to a race? What would there be for us to do there all day but stand around?" So I guess I'll never have a cheering section like other families. It makes me really sad. I'll come cheer for you Susie...You live close to me! A friend of mine did Steelman 2 years ago. She loved it. The bike course was very hilly! At the moment, I only have runs planned for next year. I am definitely running the Lehigh Valley 1/2 marathon in May. Come join me! It's a fabulous race! I plan to register next week. The price goes up after 11/1. I just registered for the Lehigh Valley 1/2 marathon...it is my PR for a 1/2 marathon at 1:58(2008)....I hope I can beat it...beautiful course!....register soon...it sells out! Bummer that it sells out! I'll have to check with my aunt and uncle to see if they will be in town that weekend. If so, I can stay with them and run the race. I looked it up and it looks like a good one! I've been looking for another half marathon and I like the date of this one. oooh...you should come and do it....then we would have 3 of us doing the race! I love this race....it is always fabulous weather....the course is beautiful and the size of the race is perfect. They gave a windbreaker last year. I wear it all the time. I was so excited last year to break 2hrs (1:58) in this race! Did I convince you yet? Yes! I am just waiting to hear if my people will be in town to watch my kiddos. Of course hubby will be gone again on race day. His schedule is killing me!!!!!!!! |

Never mind at least he doesn't put any obstacles in my path to keep competing. My hubby was not so supportive last year. At first it was kinda cute because he said how much he missed me, blah blah blah. But then it caused a lot of problems. Now he is a LOT better. I try to do most of my workouts in the mornings (tough; I'm not a morning person), but the other week I was riding the bike trainer at night and he saw how sweaty I was and he got me a cold paper towel and put some ice in my water. Awwww.
My husband gets annoyed at me for exercising so much. Basically its because I am out doing things on my own and not at home paying attention to him LOL! But when I wasn't doing any exercise he was on at me for being unfit. Men are just plain annoying & whingy and hard to please!!!! LOL. I do love him, really My hubby used to be like that. I was supposed to at home swooning over him, I think. He soon figured out that he was never going to win that game and I was alot easier to live with if I got my training in. now he just rolls his eyes at my adventures. He thinks I'm quite mad. Could he be right? I went through this in the beginning, too, even though when we started dating I was pretty into training and told him I would be running most evenings. He has been a lot less co-dependent in the past few months. YEAH! And he sees that I am grumpy and sad when I don't get out there and do my thing. But I try to not do a lot of night workouts and make sure to go hiking and other things with him when he wants. He is trying to lose weight, too, so I am hoping that I can get him into road biking in the spring. He bought a road bike last year to bike with me, but then we found out that he was very adventurous and likes to hammer the whole time and was fascinated with setting a new max speed every ride. That didn't go over so well. So hopefully next year we can do some rides together! |

Master 1790![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: VIllanous Vampires Team ThreadOK, my turn to brag I had a major swimming breakthrough this morning. I did modified flip turns for half of this swim workout. (Modified by breathing right away after the turn, like I were sighting.) I AM SO HAPPY ABOUT THIS! Been swimming I think in another month or so I should be able to do the modified turns for the entire workout, and then in another month do "real" flip turns. |

Master 1790![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: VIllanous Vampires Team ThreadAlso, found out today there is a master's group that swims on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There were 3 women and then about 6-7 guys. I asked the one woman in the locker room about it and asked a few questions, but she gave one word answers even though she was all chatty with her friends. So I take it they are not very welcoming to new women. Maybe they just don't want another woman there. But I think once I get a little faster and master the flip turns that I will look into it further. The guys in the group are very nice -- one moved to give me a lane, and another was talking to me on a non-Master's day and asked if I wanted to do his workout (but I had to leave for work). |
