I hope everyone is having a safe and happy 4th of July with family and friends today. Just got back home as I spent the day with family at my brother in-law's. No training today, just hung out and enjoyed the day with family. Will get back to training tomorrow.

I'm not going to pretend that I have kept up with anything for the past week..........anywhere!!  I am finally winding down from a really difficult week of storm restoration work.  By tomorrow afternoon (4-ish) I will have worked at least 98 hours over a 6  day period and let me tell you I can feel it.

At the peak of outages for my company we had 1.4 million customers out of power, our transmission system was absolutely decimated, line crews came from as far away as Texas, many people sacrificed family time and vacations and people worked in unbearable heat to get the customers back up and running.  We are still having many issues with our system but we are out of the woods and beginning to allow some recovery of our crews.  And trust me, my crew needs it!  They did a superior job to fight so many elements of safety and obstacles that seemed pretty insurmountable at times, it makes me quite happy to say I have such a great group of men working under me.  They always seem to come out shining when everything gets really tough.

I hope to get back into the swing of training soon and check in on everyone in the next couple of days.

Dirk, hope things slow down and U get some rest!!!

Tracy, please have a LOT of sympathy for ur husband...ouchie!!!  i just got the cold chills...

Dina, wife loves her bike but biking may be her weakness.  I would say her riding her bike is like watching someone from the south learn to ice skate.  My tri bike is still at my parents as I could only get 1 home since I didn't carry my bike rack.

Got 3 good w/o's in yesterday, I know I'm 50 and need to take it easy but easy is not in my genes.  I love working ou and would do it more if I had the time...more...more...more...yep and I'll get more injuries too and my IT will not heal!!!

Dirk I have been thinking about you and am glad to hear that things are finally winding down a little and it seems like you have things under control. You and your crews have done a tremendous job and I am sure that the people that you service appreciate all your hard work and effort to get their power restored. Hopefully you and your crews will get some much need and well deserved rest.

Quick check-in, hope everyone had a great holiday with friends and family! Currently the heat has put our camping trip on hold. We use a pop-up camper that does not have an air conditioner so when it gets hot there is no place for the kids to cool off! At 99 degrees and since we are only camping 25 minutes from the house decision was made to come home and relax in the afternoons! When swimming doesn't cool you off, it is just too hot! Maybe I am getting old ......I did manage to run in a 5k on the 4th and it was miserable. I was a full minute slower than I had been in recent races, but I think that was due to heat exhaustion. On Tuesday I ran 6 miles in the heat of the day and then to follow that up with a race Wednesday morning was probably just too much!.........Jonathan; that completely blows with the bike frame, it always seems when you try to save some money something else comes up..."........ Dina: there is no way I would go swimming with all of those fish! If they come to the dock for food it's a guarantee they are coming after the toes!?.......Dirk: it's good to hear your work is winding down, those were some crazy storms that rolled through. I have a garage roof to replace and some shingles on the house that need to be fixed but that's nothing compared to the effort you and your crews have put in!

owl_girl - 2012-07-03 11:59 PMMy husband had a fun mountain bike ride.  He fell off a bridge into blackberry brambles and officially made sure that our son was going to be an only child.  Sigh.  He's in the shower right now and will be going to bed soon.  Yep.  We are perfect for each other.
This sounds painful, hope your husband is recovering!

Matt, I'm dealing with heat exhaustion too.  It caught up with me Saturday during the race in hell.  I was struggling to keep running by the end, but then had to spend another 2 hours in the heat waiting for awards.  I was toast after that, headache, nausea the whole thing.

Monday I felt wonky, Tuesday I had no power on the bike.  Wednesday I did an early ride with a group.  We started at 6am to beat the heat, but when you ride for 4 hours you aren't beating the heat.  I fell apart with about 15 miles left.  Got dropped and couldn't push the pedals.  After they waited up for me for the 3rd time I asked someone to stay with me and keep an eye on me because I thought I might be fixing to have a heat emergency.  But I made it back in, barely.

I still feel the after effects of these 2 events.  I wonder how long it takes to bounce back from heat exhaustion?

I did a 14 mile run today!  I felt fantastic!

Husband is feeling a little better today.  He is going to the bike shop to relay his war story.  He's supposed to do a organized road ride (race) on Sunday.  Hopefully, he feels ok to do it.  It's 45 miles with a nasty hill.

Jeff I was just curious about this so I started looking around online and it seems to vary on the amount of time it takes to recover. For what it's worth I've seen someone say 4 days. One thing I did read and it seems to make sense and may apply in your case is that you are more sensitive to high temperatures for about a week following an episode of heat exhaustion. The recommendation is to avoid high temps and heavy exercise but I've not seen anything on the duration you should do this.

I got my first OWS in this morning, finally! It was a beautiful morning for a swim at the lake. I got in about 1/2 mile and didn't do too bad. I went out a 1/4 mile to one side and came back. On the way out I had to stop a few times but on the way back I swam just about all the way back non-stop as I was much more comfortable and relaxed. The wetsuit makes a big difference even for someone as slow as me! A big thanks to fellow BT'er Bobby aka Dream Chaser for taking me out there and swimming with me. He swam right next to me the entire time and encouraged me along the way. He also took time out of his busy schedule as he is in his final training prep for IMLP in a couple weeks. It was very much appreciated and I am hoping to get back out there with him next week. Now time to get my run in as I want to take advantage of this beautiful morning before it gets too hot out there.

I'm a bit behind on catching up with posts. It has been a busy week of work and visiting family here.

I'm on a fire forced taper right now. There is a 1200 acre fire burning within a few miles of my house and the smoke in the valley where we live is terrible. There shouldn't be any danger to our house though. I was only planning a short easy run, but with the smoke out there I'll skip it.

Once I can get out of the office this afternoon I'll be on the road to Rancho Seco park. Around a 200 mile drive tonight. Camp tonight and sprint tri in the morning tomorrow, then drive back home to visit with my brother Saturday evening before he leaves to head back to southern California early Sunday morning.

I hope everyone is doing well.

Wow to you as well to the smoke nearby!  Geez, this weather... Undecided I really wonder if this is a preface to what we will be dealing with in the years to come, or if this is just an atypical year....

Vero good luck with sprint tri tomorrow and have a safe trip. I hope they get that fire near your home under control. I work with a lot of guys in Colorado so I have been hearing about what has been going on there with the wild fires first hand.

Hope everyone has a great weekend. I am going to hit the bike today but will probably stay indoors. It is going to be very hot out here today with high humidity so I will try to get it done on the trainer. Plus since my team is getting killed in the TdF challenge we need to do some serious work to catch up.

Tracy great job on the 14 mile run sounds like all the extra run work you are doing is paying off. So when are you going to run that marathon? Smile

I'm really glad Stan (I think it was?) mentioned the tdf personal challenge!!  It has really gotten me out and riding!  Biking is the leg I feel I could use the most improvement/largest time gain, so this has been quite good for me.  So far I've gotten up to 8 days in a row of riding in, and I know I would not have done that without the tdf thing.  My legs have definitely been feeling it the past few days, but I'm happy just to get out there day after day to just be riding!

I can't wait for this massive heat wave to be over! The riding on some days I went out in the 90-100 degree weather as I don't think it feels excruciatingly hot (although I was still dreading getting out the door...), but with the running, I just really do not want to be out there in those temps... which on a day like today is crappy, because since I didn't run in the morning, now I have to wait until the evening to run... (don't really want to run on a treadmill!) and the only thing about being forced to wait until the evening is that hopefully I will still mentally feel like running at that time!  I think it's easy to make the excuse to skip out on workouts during times like these...

Samantha I agree with you, the challenge has been a good thing for me too. I may actually get around 400 miles riding in this month which would be pretty awesome. I also agree with you when it comes to the weather it is pretty easy to use that as an excuse not to workout. Good job getting out there and getting your workouts in even with the high temps and the heat. I skipped my bike ride outdoors today because of the heat but I did not skip the workout. I got a great 3 hour ride on the trainer this afternoon which wound up being my longest so far 56 miles.

Good luck, Johnny!

What's everyone else up to?

As for me Tracy, I'm up to 5'8" and about 157 lbs. Laughing

But if you're asking about training or racing, I'm finally back off the "rest" wagon.  I got a short 30 mile ride in this morning and I am planning an easy 5 miles before hitting a solid week next week.....I hope.  I need to get my training levels up in a hurry if I am going to be trained up for the 2 HIM's I have planned in about 8 weeks.  I feel like I have a very long way to go before I am ready and the storm work I just went through didn't help me any.

I also apologize for not being around for what seems like a long time, even before the storm, and I feel like I haven't been doing enough to help all of you out as you progress in your training.  Hopefully I'll be able to get back on both the training horse and the mentoring horse starting tomorrow.  I'll try to get caught up on all of the post's over the past week in the coming days.
