New user 900 , | Subject: RE: 2014 Garden Thread Josh and Mary, both of your gardens are really looking great. I have some apple trees that are three years old this year, so I will let them bear next year. The peaches should be ready by the fourth of July. The garden is doing well in spite of some weather that wreaked havoc on it (hail and then wind). We have been picking tomatoes, squash and peppers for several weeks now. Most of the corn was blown over, but what is still standing has pollinated and is at the milk stage. Need to start canning stuff pretty quick or just keep giving some away as I have been doing. Sorry for not having pics, not computer savvy. Keep posting, I like seeing the progress. |

21 | Subject: RE: 2014 Garden Thread For the first time in years I actually have some gardening. I have one container of various herbs (rosemary, thyme, oregano, parsley, coriander, spring onions and ginger), pots of basil, mint and chive, one container that right now is salad, but I might do some radishes in. There is also 4 tomato plants (starting to see the first tomatos) and 6 cayenne pepper plants. I am super excited. In July I will head to my parents for two weeks however (house sitting and watching the cat and dog) and there I will have access to my mom's rather great garden. I look forward to cooking with homegrown veggies. (IMG_0377[1].JPG) Attachments ---------------- IMG_0377[1].JPG (4316KB - 40 downloads) |

New user 560 Key West | Subject: RE: 2014 Garden Thread I recently harvested the first pineapple that I have ever grown. LIke a moron, I didn't take a picture of it though. I grew it from a top of a Dole pineapple that I had. It did take about 3 years to produce fruit, but my understanding is that it will keep producing now. I have another top, so might just start a little pineapple farm. By the way, it was yummy. I also have a tomato plant that come up as a volunteer after I used my compost soil on some of my plants. It already produced tomatoes (think it was a cherry tomato plant) and looks like it is going for a second round now. I have never had the same plant produce more than one round of tomatoes but this one is looking good to go again. Happy gardening!! |

Two apple trees and a peach tree. . Jealous. My Saturn peach tree had little fruits all over when I bought it. I think I overwatered and they all shriveled up. I popped them all off and the tree looks better now.
Buying plants with fruits already on them can be a chancy idea... especially if it's earlier in the season than the fruits would normally appear. It means the plant is under stress and trying to reproduce. It also means that the plant is busy with fruits and won't put much effort into taking root. If you're buying from someplace that has a guarantee and will replace it if it dies... then go ahead. If not, might be best to wait for fall and see what's still around.

New user 900 , | Subject: RE: 2014 Garden Thread Originally posted by bootygirl July 4th check in - how does your garden grow? Your gardens look great! All the work y'all put in has really paid off. My garden is doing well. So far we have canned 50+ pints and 12 quarts of tomatoes and still give away plenty. Corn has been done for about three weeks and we canned about 80 pints. Squash is in its last weeks as it is getting hotter now, but they have produced well. Peppers still going strong and should be pulling some cantaloupes and watermelons next week. Picked our first peaches this weekend, talk about good. I will probably make ice cream with some next weekend. All in all we have a good year with the exception of the wind and hail on the popcorn which pretty much took it out. I hate to rush things but I am looking forward to fall and fresh apples. |

it is doing well now. I think it went into shock - the guy at the garden center suggested from the get go that we remove the fruit. It has quite a bit of new growth. |
