This week has been tough. I have whatever flu my kids had caught.

It sucks because it is not a full-time, be miserable, and then sleep it off.

It is more, half-the-day you feel fine - the second half you want to sleep, throat hurts, head or ear ache, feel like you want to puke.

It is like I have been fighting off a real flu, but it takes 7-10 days to run its course.
My daughter is over it, my son is close, my wife and I have a few more days...
It is tough to tell, because every time you feel better - it gets worse again.

Things got better for me.
However, my wife got hit by something that we have not been able to diagnose as of yet.
She vomited 4 times today.
However, my in-laws are in town.

So I have been able to train, but I am on their schedule.

For example, my kids and I are morning people and my in-laws are night owls.

So I had to forgo my first half-day ride with the local tri-club.
I needed to hang out until they woke up, and then I went for a smaller solo ride.
(In case the baby woke up, I could be there to feed and change her.)

The Redondo Tri is in exactly two weeks, so I am hoping for a good week+ before I lighten up.
If I can avoid whatever just got my wife, the help with the kids + school year ended (I am an educator) = more time for training.

On another note, that hill I am trying to conquer totally kicked my today.

Hi everyone,

No, I haven't given up. I have been trying to stick to the plan although I skip some days when I feel too tired because of the pregnancy.

I have realised though that the only thing the actually helps with my nausea is exercising, so when I don't feel like training I remind myself that I will feel much better afterwards.

It's just a shame that I don't feel quite with the same energy and I can't push myself harder while training, but well... let's see if I will really cope with the training until the end of the month and if I will be able to compete on the 28th June!

I am still training prety good.  My HIM plan does not start for another few weeks so I have just been woking on increasing my base.  This week I plan on 4-5 rides to get good saddle time and 3-4 swims.  I am also getting the wife used to me training frequently so she is ready for the real stuff.

Since Sunday, things have been well.
Other than the week I was sick, I have been able to increase my training volume for May.

I am sore as all what-not right now, but it is good sore - not injury pain.

That will be taken care of by mid-week next week when I start a mini-taper or the Redondo Beach Tri on June 14.

Also, I got a killer deal on running shoes from roadrunnersports.

I bought during their Memorial Day sale, then I googled the website and "coupon promotion codes" and got a code for another $20 off.

I am SO trying that for every online purchase that I make from now on....

Great to hear, sounds like things are coming around for you. What are the distances of your tri?

It is actually an "equilateral Tri" - where all three legs should be roughly about the same.

1/2 mile OWS ocean, 6 mile bike, 2 mile run.

It is a little short for my taste (my first tri at UCLA was 13.5 mile bike -all hills, and a 5 k run).

However, the time and location were too perfect to care.

It is only my second tri, and the day after I graduate from my doctoral program at UCLA.

I will be ready to party Sunday afternoon.

Took a test swim at Redondo Beach today.
I wanted to get in one OWS plus check out my sea goggles and my rental 2XU wetsuit (is XXXL really that tight?)

the good news, all my equipment checks out.
I was also able to keep my splits under 2 minutes per 100.

However, I need to maintain a certain speed to fight the current, and that is running me about 10-20 bpm faster that I thought.

I will get two more pool sessions in this week and try to run them at higher intensities to prepare.

Hi all,

New group member here.

I'm a married Dad with two boys (4 and 5) and a third on the way (late August).

I've been trying to work on this triathlon thing since last September, but a couple of injuries (hip sfx and bad disc in my back) have kept me on the sidelines until just recently.

Now that I seem to have recovered to the point where I can train again, I wanted to join a mentor group for the summer.  Shermbelle was kind enough to let me jump in this group mid-stream.

My goals are to stay healthy, have fun, and finish a few races.  I have my first race (well, first in 18 years) coming up this weekend.

Cheers -
Rob/wiky

Thanks.  The race was a blast.  Great course, perfect weather, and fun people.

I went from panicking on the swim (was my first OWS, it was COLD, and I thought I was going to have to quit) to finishing first overall.  Details are in my race report.

The funniest part of the whole thing was T1.  I was cold and dizzy from the swim and managed to pull my shorts off with my wetsuit.  Whoops!  Fortunately, I didn't hear any gasping or laughing.  Unfortunately, I didn't hear any cheering either.

BTW, I have a question about T1.

I felt dizzy/light-headed in T1 yesterday.  Had to sit down to put my shoes on to avoid falling down.  Is that normal?  The swim was pretty cold, so maybe that had something to do with it?

Would like to avoid feeling like that again.

Had a great weekend.

My in-laws, parents, and a surprise visit from my brother were all here for the weekend.

I graduated for my Ed.D. at UCLA on Sunday, did my second Tri (Redondo Beach), had my grad party Sunday afternoon...

I am totally ready to start training for my next race which will probably be Castaic in August.

Got my new 2xU wesuit and did a brief OWS today.  It is a L/Tall.  I am 6'2" and 185-190#.  It feels tight, but I think an XL would be huge.  Also, water gets in, but not a ton.  Is this normal?  Should this be happening?  It does not seem waterlogged, but definatley wet.

Also, it is hard to swim in Open Water.  I have some work to do. Ugh.

Well I think our group has disbanded.  I did my first Tri yesterday.  Harder than I thought.  Went OK.  7 weeks until my OLY in Chicago.  I must swim more.

Hey man - congrats on your first tri.  I did my first tri this year also, and it was a rush.

Good luck in Chicago - that's a freakin' huge race!
