enders_shadow - 2008-01-10 5:39 PM Question for my Nibbs... Dinner party. Folks I don't know well. Asked if there was any dietary issues and the answer was "We are adventurous eaters, but wife & child don't eat pork"... Seafood Lasagna or Chicken/Spinach Lasagna? (And to be honest - I've not made either of them before, but I usually test out new recipes in front of guests...)

Chicken/spinach. Even if they're adventurous, I think chicken/spinach is a safer bet.

x2

Wait... more importantly, didjya MISS me????!!!

Yeah, I miss you - but I wasn't here either. At least you know I wasn't talking about you while you were gone.

Hooray you're back!

Yeah - that whole reintegrating with my family unit took more time/energy than I expected. LOL! But now the Monkeys are in bed and sugar daddy is watching hockey and doesn't seem to care that I'm not paying attention to him. Ha!

yaaaay! it's nibbins time

My son just got his letter of intent for black belt testing. This is huge. It means we will be living at the karate school for the next month. Test date - February 15. He was a black belt partner last year so he knows what the test is like. It is grueling. The instructors really go after the kids mentally and physically. They tire them out then push their mental weaknesses. Nearly all the candidates were in tears at some point during last year's test. And he has to write 4 papers on modesty, self-control, perseverance, and the indomitable spirit. Kind of like the Ironman of martial arts for a 9 year old.

Hi Pam--and all the other fine Nibbins out there

I remain whoop-azz tired.  Was going to get on the bike trainer today cause I haven't been on it all week and could barely force my legs to pedal for 15 minutes.  Decided if the only reason I was on it was to say I hit the bike today then I was getting OFF.

So tomorrow morning I'm going to the rehab facility to apply because we got the Tom-tom all loaded for me to find the place   Just checked option 1's website and that darn job is still not re-posted for me to reapply...

After that--a long run and hopefully a spin.  Have to go grocery shopping again

wow, that's a lot of work for all that.  I never knew karate took that much other mental effort. I mean it's a mental sport as much as physical but the written papers?  Even if they're just a couple of paragraphs that's a ton of writing for most 9 yr olds in addition to their school work.  Pushing a kid to the point of tears in the testing?  Man, that's rough! Hope he does well

Yeah. It's crazy. The actual physical test is 4 hours long, from 7pm til 11pm. It is hard to watch. The best thing for a candidate is to stay "under the radar". Once the instructors single you out, they will pick you apart like a vulture on roadkill.

Good luck on the job search. The right one will happen. Hopefully soon

I thought she said last night that today was supposed to be as bad as some of the others...

Got my new cell phone!  (yay) the store couldn't transfer my numbers though (boo) something about the port not connecting right.  What a PITA to program those phone numbers into the phone...nice part though is I could put home/cell and work number for the same person instead of multiple entries for that person (oh yeah , that old phone was really old)

My son has been doing karate since he was 3. I signed him up as a preschooler because he was behind in coordination and large motor skills and the ped. thought martial arts or gymnastics would do him a world of good (which it has). He made the commitment to stick it out through black belt. This karate school prepares them for this test. Most of their classes are like mini-tests (especially at his level). The instructors tell the kids in class over and over "we aren't looking for perfection. We're looking for your best effort, confidence in what you are doing and a lot of energy". During black belt testing, they tear them down to see how bad the kids want it. And when they pass, they get built back up again. Each black belt has the child's name embroidered on it. It sounds brutal and it is hard for a parent to watch, but my child (as of now) has no self-esteem issues. Karate has given him a lot of confidence and belief in himself that he can do what ever he sets his mind on. That's why I support it 100 percent. He may not pass first go around. A lot of them don't. And he realizes this. No matter what, I'm proud of him.

that sounds really neat - it sounds like there are some great instructors and they teach the kids to try and succeed, but also that failure also is a part of life and it's important to try again - did I get that right

impressive...shows how little I actually know about that sport. One of the girls did gymnastics for a while, she was good but she started getting flippant with her teachers at school (more than a typical tweenage girl) so we yanked her out to teach her a lesson on respect of others (and that I'm not paying for fun extra curricular stuff when you don't do your homework and mouth off about it)
