I had to come in to work an hour early today, so I got up at 4:45 to go swimming beforehand. The pools opens at 5:30. Or so I thought.

Turns out the water is still taunting me.

Pool opens at 5:30 MWF and 6 T-TH. Huh? So I got up at 4:45 to swim for 15 minutes. *sigh*

BTW, a YouTube video someone posted on the main forum about early vertical forearm has changed my life. I DON'T KNOW THE FIRST THING ABOUT SWIMMING!

This challenge has been such a blessing. I started out thinking I was pretty good in the water, just slow, and I'm discovering all these things I do completely wrong. I am SO glad it's December, because if I can get this stuff down in the next couple of months, then I should no longer be last out of the water and I might even get fast enough to not be lapped by the slowest Master's swimmer.

Got in a swim today, but I am still one swim behind for the month.  I will make it up (not sure how or when) by the end of the month so that I will make the challenge.

Early vertical forearm is a big deal right now.  Did you read rstocks post in tritalk?  He's soooo right on.  I bought some tech paddles last year to work on EVF.  google forearm paddles to get the site cause I don't remember where I bought them from.  I use them a couple sets a week (maybe 200 to 300 yards at max per use)  It's really helped me get my arm in the right catch position.  I do fist and touch up drill a lot too.  Fist helps work on the catch, touch up to help keep it long.  Sculling also helps with getting a good vetical forearm.  It takes patience and effort to get good at but has helped a lot.  My coach throws sculling in periodically to get us working on that.

No.  My paddles have a wide angled plastic piece on the forearm with a handle and velcro strap.  It's called a techpaddle.  I'll hunt the site for you.

Try www.techpaddle.com   I just hunted the paddle on a google seach and they have a photo and write up on the paddle that I use. The disc that comes with the paddle is pretty lame, more of an infomecial than instruction of ho to use it right.  Start with short distances and go slow working on the muscle memory of proper form.  Like other paddles, don't use them every time you swim or for extended periods of the sets--just a good tool to get your form improving where you want.

I did the first drill -- 100 yards per session -- I just didn't realize I was doing it totally wrong.

what is sculling?

Sculling is an interesting drill.

You are in position like freestyle but your arms are in a Y in front of you with high elbows.  NO KICKING (or very minimal kick)  Move your arms from the elbows  like a treading water motion back and forth.  Your head can be up as if you are sighting in OWS so it is a good drill toi get used to that too.

Purpose...high elbows, forearm feel for the water,...can be a nice recovery between harder sprints too...practice head up swim for OWS races.  Lots of good reasons to try sculling.

Warning...it is tediously slow at first, I've only gotten decent at it in the past few months.

I did sculling today three different ways...from a you tube video I watched. I'm sore..it was a tough swim. Here is the link .

Do you scull with same pattern both hands same way same time?

I'm up to 9 swims this month

My girls and I were alone most of the time in the pool this afternoon. Folks in MA are wimps when it comes to the snow.

yes, that's how my coach has me scull every time.  I no longer fight with him about things cause well...he has the certifications and I had to learn how to swim from a step above pput the face in water and blow bubbles a couple years ago.

He did 200 yds just doing dead mans float up and down the lanes. Just getting him there was huge. He wants to go tomorrow with me again. I have hour swim followed by 30' of weights and help him...probably will be good start to no sugar, diet soda, white stuff or sugar substitutes...keep busy.

Hey kids, it's time for another exciting installment in the Reindeer Run-Swim-Bike-FoodLog-StrengthTrain-OtherLimiter-off! When we checked last week, we had a close race, but there were some reindeer holding their teams back. NO MORE! Those reindeer are grounded, and now their teams can fly to fullest potential! They'll soar! They'll leap! They'll kick those limiters in the rear!

I know you are all excited, so let's find out how our teams are doing with 61% of the month gone. It's a close one! Are you ready? Get out your secret decoder rings, and turn them to V-C-B-D. Ready?

1st: Vixens at 66.78%
2nd: Comets at 58.88%*
3rd: Blitzens at 58.13%
4th: Dancers at 56.94%

How exciting! The Vixens hold their lead! The Comets and Blitzens are a hair's breadth apart! Who would have guessed? There were some close calls, a few people squeaking in right at 40%! Fantastic job pulling through for your team to fly on toward the finish. With the teams fielding their strongest members, what will change for next week? We've got the holidays, surely the Vixens can't keep their remarkable streak going? Who will overtake them? Will YOU face your Limiter this week? Tune in next week to find out the results of the last full week of the challenge!

*Comets have one member very close to 40% - his total isn't included in this percentage, but I left him on the spreadsheet in case he simply hadn't updated his logs and I sent a PM.

Sore leg is slowing me down, I toughed out 5 miles last week to get to 40%,  I have been swimming to give my calf a rest.  Tomorrow, Ill give it a try to see how it is bouncing back.  But I'm old and I get tired easy...

Swam 2000 yards without stopping today!  Never swam that far before. Could only swim the length of the pool (25yds) the beginning of November!  Ran 3 miles after, leg is feeling a little better.  Might have to break down and run in the snow the next 8 days....
