As someone who is a bigger guy and who had really bad eating habits and has since turned it around significantly sans holidays keeping a food log really make you think about what you are eating and how much. You would be surprised how much calories people consume. MOst fast food joints and other lunch spots post nutrition facts and they are rather enlightening.

I like BT's nutrition blog as it has most foods already set-up in it and if not you can add it. I also set-up a generic 1000 calorie entry for those meals I just can't figure out and guess what damage I did.

Good morning everyone!  I'm a phlegm factory over here and hoping that this is just a passing cold and not something more seirous.

Hope everyone had a good weekend of training.

Sounds exactly like what I had last week!!  I think I'm going to have to borrow the term "phlegm factory"....haha.  That was totally me during Saturday's run....I was constantly trying to clear my throat.

I'm glad you're feeling better though!  I'm eating Zicam like candy and hoping it passes.

I had origionally typed mucous factory, but it just didn't have the same ring to it.  Hehe.

Happy Monday everyone... total slacker/non-training weekend for me.  A dismal start to my 2009 training plans... but I finally got back on track with an early AM run.  I may even get in a second jaunt if the weather holds out here.  I don't mind the cold, but the rain...

Lookin' at the TL's is looks likes everyone had a good start to '09.

Epyon - 2009-01-04 10:40 PM Wow!!!  It's amazing to actually have it put out in front of you.

My wife and I used Weight Watchers to help us drop our 60lbs each.  I was a doubter... but writing all your food down and actually seeing what your intake is... enlightening to say the least.

Before that, I had trained for the '04 Houston Marathon and only lost (maybe 10lbs) in the process.  Although I was running, I was eating bad and usually a lot of it.  Becoming more aware, really helped me (us) win the battle of losing the weight.  We have kept it off for over a year now, and it is our lifestyle now.  I feel as good at 38 (39 in Feb) as I did at 20-21.

Keep the faith, remain diligent, and be patient... you WILL reach your goal.

The sad thing is, I have no excuse for knowing that.  I am a 25 year old without children and I could recite that entire movie.

So I guess Eric is actually working today huh?

I'm right there with you....love this movie!  You're gonna love this one....when I'm swimming and I start to get bored and/or tired I sometimes sing (to myself of course, not out loud)..."Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming."

Well, since we're on the topic of animated movies, I recently saw KungFu Panda.  Could possibly be my favorite animated movie!!

Yep, it's been pretty busy for me since everyone's back in town.  Eating lunch now though so I can catch up. After two weeks off of pilates that class kicked my butt.  Amazes me how I can run/bike for hours yet a hour of that stuff can kill me.  I'm almost able to touch my toes though

When I asked for Shrek 3, wall-e and cars for xmas my mom called me a dork as well

I loved Kung Fu Panda as well!

I guess I'm not the only one who is still an 8 year old girl at heart.

I feel like I'm putting out so many fires today at work that the entire building might just burn down around me!  I can't believe it's 2 already... I shoudl think about lunch as well.

Who would be interested in a weekly swim workout for the group? I could makeup a workout 1000-1500yds that might help you mix up what you've been currently doing and make the swim workout not so boring.  For those just starting out swimming need to focus on drills and lessons but the workouts will also include drills and I'll explain what they are aimed at improving.

Thoughts?

Put me down for a plan!  You are the resident expert and I can use all the help I can get.

Question about swim training devices... Pull Buoy, swim mits (hand things), kick board?  Are they worthwhile investments? If so, rank in order of use/gain improtance or which should I get first?

The thing is... most of those movies have more embedded adult humor than most people realize.  I haven't seen Wall-e or Shrek 3, but Cars was a good movie... lots of things in the details of that movie.  I had to watch it twice to really see some of the things.

LMAO!!! Yep, I will forever be using that idea when I am swimming now.

Skadooooosh! KFP was very funny.  Jack Black made the character.

I had a similar question, but just about the swim mits.  Does anyone use them?  What are they meant to help you with?

I use the pull buoy a fair amount...usually do some drills with it at the beginning of my workout.  I've found it to be pretty helpful.  It sits between your thighs, so you don't have to kick and can focus on your stroke.

I would love love love a weekly swim workout.  That would be awesome, and definately motivational to know that if I didn't do it you all would make fun of me.

Could we do a weekly cycling or running interval workout too?  I'm not sure this will make sense, but perhaps structure a 5 minute or 10 minute interval series that can be done however many times we would need to in order to get our workout time to where it needs to be?

So maybe a cycling interval workout that was something like:
2 minutes at an RPE of 5
30 second sprint
30 second sprint with climb
1 minute seated climb in same gear
1minute recovery RPE of 3
Repeat as many times as necessiary, for me probably 10 to hit the 50 minute mark plus a warm up and cool down?

It might be fun to be doing similar training stuff even though we're all over the place and doing a bunch of different events?

I have and use all 3 torture devices- uh, I mean, swim training tools.

I am a really weak kicker so I use my kickboard the most to help to improve my technique/efficiency there.

As far as mits/paddles go, I have read several places that they can gank up your shoulders if your form with how your hand comes out of and goes into the water isn't good.   I worked with a swimming coach for several months before my stroke was to the point that they added in the mits.

For swimming equipment here would be my list...

-Fins
-Paddles (http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/3169.htm)
-Pull bouy (I prefer the one piece ones)
-Swimming snorkel (http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/1221.htm)

I didn't put the kickboard on here because triathletes don't need anything more than a 2-beat kick which is mostly from body rotation and a kickboard promotes an elevated upper body which causes hips/legs to drop. Some people love them but even in college most of our kicking was done with a 25lb weight held over our heads or on our side where we could work on body position and kicking

Each of these items can be used as crutches and should only be used during a warmup/drill/cooldown section.
