Veteran 163 Welland, Ontario | Subject: RE: Tami's Group - CLOSED - FULL I also have a question about the 10% rule. I am following the olympic program but just for the run part. My increases are in time each week by 10%. I have no idea if my distances are also increasing by 10%. I guess it all depends on my speed for that week. Most of the time I keep it pretty consistent and build from the following week, but does it matter that I am not looking back at my distances to know my increases. It is also a bit hard to keep track of the distances when I Am doing intervals as I am always resetting the machine. |

Veteran 163 Welland, Ontario | Subject: RE: Tami's Group - CLOSED - FULL Thanks for the salad information. Yesterday's salad was very good. Although when I first took it out and put it all on a plate I made a face when I started to smell the peppers. I have to get over that. I am very proud of myself for eating all of them. It wasn't too bad when it was mixed with everything. I know eventually I need to change the salad dressing that I use, but it is only 15 calories per tbsp and that isn't much. And I am not one of those people who drown their salad in dressing. I should switch over to the vinaigrette ones which I sometimes use (but once again it is the bottled kind). What portions do you use if you make your own? I cut up some of my vegetables for the week and others I like to cut either the night before or morning of. My peppers I sliced up for the week. And I shredded some carrots for the week. cucumbers I like to do within 24 hours of eating. If anyone can tell me that they keep well after cutting, I may change that. My green beans I could cut up for the week but for some reason I don't - I should. |

Veteran 231 | Subject: RE: Tami's Group - CLOSED - FULL Mel - For the 10% rule - I would use it based on time, not necessarily distance. Lynn- For swimming/biking - I don't think it applies so much....for instance - last year on the bike as soon as it got nice out - BAM 1 loop at lake placid (56 miles)....then the following weekend....BAM 90 miles at lake placid.... As with anything - it depends on your conditioning and making sure you have proper form etc otherwise you will get hurt. Running is such high impact, I think it's important to stick to the 10% rule with that sport... T |

Veteran 292 Chicago, IL | Subject: RE: Tami's Group - CLOSED - FULL Thanks Tami- very good points. I do recall putting a 56 miler in last year when the weather warmed up (bike) after minimal base. And you eliminated my excuse for swimming.

Veteran 163 Welland, Ontario | Subject: RE: Tami's Group - CLOSED - FULL I thought you might like this story. After my yoga class tonight I went for a swim. A man comes up to me and tells me that I inspired him to start swimming. I had never even talked to this man before in my life. He said he saw me swimming back in April and wanted to be able to do what I was doing. At the time he could barely do a lap - couldn't bring his arms out of the water. Now he can do 800 - 1000m. He said if he saw me again he wanted to thank me and tonight he did. I thought that was really nice to hear. So next time you are at the gym, whether you are the fast person or the slow person, you might be motivating someone. Edited by mellymedic 2009-01-28 9:30 AM |

Veteran 163 Welland, Ontario | Subject: RE: Tami's Group - CLOSED - FULL I am supposed to go running outside after work today, but there is a winter storm going on outside at the moment (15-25 cm expected). Although I brought my running gear to work with me today, I also brought my cycle clothes as a back up. I think I might end up doing my back up plan for today and I'll run tomorrow at the gym as I like the Wednesdays cycle class better than Thursdays. I don't mind running outside while it is snowing but by the time I get out there the storm will be just about over and the streets will not have been cleaned yet. Too much snow to wade through. Too much snow to wade through. I hope you did not get a lot of snow! Way to have a back-up plan! Mel- Great inspiration for the pool. I will start swimming next week We wouldn't want to start anything the week before a half-marathon race...right? Tomorrow I am going to bike for 1 hour or so after the LBS adjusts the seat and the squeeking sound in the new compact crank.

Veteran 292 Chicago, IL | Subject: RE: Tami's Group - CLOSED - FULL Ok ladies--this might be my last post before Monday. I am leaving for a half marathon in New Orleans early Saturday morning. I am a bit nervous since the last 2 weeks of training have been way off plan...a positive spin is that it is a major taper Anyway, I my goal for the race is to go at a nice easy pace and to really see the city. Just enjoy it for once. But I have a feeling that I will be watching the clock and pushing the pace. I have to remember not to injure myself. Goal finish is 2:30....which would be my slowest ever. But I think I am ok with that..... Everyone have a good couple of days! |

Veteran 163 Welland, Ontario | Subject: RE: Tami's Group - CLOSED - FULL I have been working out hard at the gym - No time for the internet. LOL!!! so this is my cooking story for the day. I tried out 2 new recipies tonight for dinner. One of them was an eggplant dish as a sidedish and the other was a burger with onions and a sauce. Both dishes are healthy. Well I batted a 1 for 2. The burger i liked however my parents were soso on it. The eggplant which normally I like (however I have never made it before) was a bit of a disaster. I think I put too much chili paste (even though I didn't put that much in) cause that was all you tasted. I had about 3 bites and couldn't eat anymore. Oh well. Lynn - looking forward to hearing all about your race. |

Veteran 163 Welland, Ontario | Subject: RE: Tami's Group - CLOSED - FULL I forgot to mention a very important thing. I mailed my first registration form for my first race of 2009 this weekend. I plan on doing a 5k race on the 15th of february. I like doing the 5ks to work on speed. Plus for some of the races I get nice shirts - with this one I get a tech dry fit shirt. I am probably going to be doing another 5k the following week (not registered yet). And the first week in March I all be doing an 8k (or 5 miller). Racing season is finally coming - now all I need is the nicer weather. |

Veteran 292 Chicago, IL | Subject: RE: Tami's Group - CLOSED - FULL Hey all! I did not PR, but felt the best ever after this half-marathon. Two keys to success: (1) ran with friend THE ENTIRE TIME (2) we kept our target heartrates 150-160....so even when I had plenty left in the tank and wanted to sprint the last 3 miles, we stuck to the game plan since we both knew it was more of a "training run" given the goal not to get injured and to also start the HIM training on Tuesday. Oh- and to be able to enjoy the remaining 20 hours in New Orleans! But yes- I was the annoying person with the watch constantly beeping...I changed the settings on my watch pre-race and was apparently in a "I will beep slow when you are at bottom of range, speed up, then squel when you are at top of range" program I have to say, it was sorta nice not to have anyone running too close to us for very long The race course was flat and fast. Weather great--55-62ish. And the best part is all the great food in New Orleans you get to enjoy post race! I would definitely recommend this race to anyone! It was not packed like most races I am use to. Oh-and for you Soap Opera fans out there---Todd Manning from One-Life-to-Live ran the race! We saw him at the expo and then at the race when we were in the porta-potty line! (No pictures cause we were busy). Finally- it was very close to my PR at the distance if include HM in HIM or marathon distances. For a stand-a-lone half mary, this was a PR. Hopefully an exciting forecast for 2009's future performances! Thanks for all your wishes!

Th P90X workouts are an at home DVD based training set--includes weight lifting, plyometrics, yoga, and some pretty crazy exercises too. I use it for building strength when I"m starting up a good base for tri season--I found it actually helps my joints take more of a pounding! I think if you search for it on the BT site, there are a few forums about it. Thanks for the advice too!!! Good job in the half mary!!!! Edited by hannawho 2009-02-03 7:39 AM |
