aspeelma - 2009-11-24 4:26 PM Ghoulies something is wrong. My knee has been stiff since Sunday. I could feel it doing some popping when I was running then, but it never really hurt. It hasn't hurt since then it has just sort of been stiff. I head out for my 5 mile run this afternoon, I live on a hill, so I start running down hill and I can feel a popping again at the top of my knee cap, but this time it hurts. I couldn't run very far, I turned around and walked home. I already have a doctor appt scheduled for Dec. 2, I doubt I could get in before that. I have a HM on January 17th this is no time to be injured.Right now I'm sitting in my recliner with it propped up and with ice on it.

Ann, so sorry to read this.  Ice and rest are your friends.  Your description sounds so familiar.  Keeping toes and fingers crossed for a quick recovery.  FYI, when you get to the point of running again, avoid hills for a while.

disturbed275 - 2009-11-24 3:12 PM Well, I'm back from the doc.  She believes it to be trochanteric bursitis, which was was the frontrunner for my self diagnosis.  I have a series of stretches to work on everyday and she even wants me to try some run/walking before the next appointment.  Follow up will include some treadmill running to check out the gait to see if that could be attributing anything.  Good news is no limit on the biking, which I was worried about.

While *trochanteric* sounds intimidating, the overall prognosis sounds promising.

sometimes you step into a life that you think (at the time) that you want/need, and you realize (perhaps) too late that is doesnt even come close to what you really wanted/needed.

at the time my life made sense.

but ive changed so completely in the past few years - there are days i hardly recognize myself - in the process (sounds SO CHEESY to say it) i FOUND MYSELF

this life 'fit' who i was 'before', but now.  not so much.

if i could pick up the people in my life (dont want to make any changes there, they're imperfect, but they're 'mine') and go, i would.

but circumstances being what they are, this is where i am.

but mark my words.  there WILL come a day.

I can relate to this.

i think a lot of people can, ANN.  which actually is quite 'comforting'.

stacieb

I've been asked before a couple times, if I could go back and do it all over again, would I?

I have made a lot of mistakes, and broken a lot of bones, but any little change could have changed the entire outcome, and while I'm not thrilled with where I'm at I wouldn't give up my two kiddos to do it any differently. So for now I'll just patiently wait for them to finish school, or jump on the lets get out of dodge bandwagon. I can still take short trips and do things. Speaking of... Do you want to come to NJ with Kim and I to run a half marathon on April 18th?
I'm already commited to my second half marathon in Salt Lake in April. It might even be the same weekend!

Evening Ghoulies. Unfortunately I had a rather craptacular day mostly due to receiving "an email" from my son's teacher first thing this morning. Apparently there have been two MAJOR projects he hadn't even started that are both late and that he had neglected to even tell us about at home. Needless to say we had some words when I got home. Now it's time to start some homework uber-micromanaging. Can't wait...

Unfortunately, leaving work early in order to catch his teacher (for another really pleasant conversation) meant I missed out on my 3.5 miler today. I've got a 35 minute tempo run tomorrow though, and if things at work go well I may be able to sneak it in before I get in a bonus workout with one of our officer applicants. She's nervous about the running and exercises she'll be doing at OCS and it's my privilege to work with folks like her to get them ready to go. I really do enjoy these workouts because they're some of my best ST sessions (because I get to be just a teensy-weensy bit sadistic).

Now it's time to go catch up on the VERY chatty events of the day.

kcarroll - 2009-11-24 7:23 AM Anyone else been to Alaska?  I went a couple years ago and loved it.  The only negative is that we went via cruise ship and I am just not a cruiser kind of gal.  I want to back via land and visit Denali.  We saw so many bald eagles, they were like pigeons in NYC.  And the bears were incredible!

I spent a month in the Gulf of Alaska a couple years ago on my ship. We were supposed to get a port visit in Homer (sorta near Anchorage) but the weather didn't allow us to go there. The seas were pretty nasty - not exactly "Deadliest Catch" bad, but easily a few days with 18-20 footers which will definitely get your attention.

Unfortunately the closest I got to land was a view of Kodiak Island on the horizon a few mornings

wgraves7582 - 2009-11-24 9:47 AM Kim,

If you are up to it (might not be a story you want to share) but what in the world made you leave Montana????????????????????????????????????????? - LOL

I get that all the time about Colorado but it got too commercial - Montana seems perfecto to me

I love Montana.  I was born there.  My Dad's side of the family still lives there.  He was in the military and that took us all over the map.  I more or less grew up in Georgia though.  Work took me out to Arizona and then to the east coast.  I've been in NJ for the last 10 years.  But I will retire out west.  My cousins live in Missoula and have a house on Flathead lake.  I love going to visit.  As a semi type A workaholic it is good for me to hang with people who work to live vs live to work.

OK that is cool - we can be friends and you would definitely want to hang out with me - work is a means to travel and exercise and comes a distant 3rd or 4th (I just make it look good by showing up early (then leaving early also) and taking all the good travel sites so the boss thinks I am dedicated )

Yep I need more friends like you. I work crazy long hours and exercise is a real stress reliever.  I also take advantage of the travel my job requires, although sometimes it is exhausting.  I would never complain though as it has allowed me to see parts of the world I would never otherwise visit.  I haven't been to Africa yet and that is definitely on my list.

I am jealous of you guys that get to travel for work. What a great way to get to see great places. I make people clean up hazardous waste. WHEN I get to travel is to the industrial wastelands of the country.

Robin I just extend my stay - most times I am in industrial parks and stuff like that but my hours are pretty short when I travel most times so I just extend the stay or make due with the free time I have.

Thursday I landed at 1:45 but could not see my client until Friday morning so I headed off to Lake Tahoe.  Most of the guys I work with would go check in the hotel and find the local bar.  I went for a cool drive and saw a pretty cool place.  Should have planned better and I could have snuck a nice hike in but I was lallygagging too much!

I get to sit in an office in the ghetto and hope the giant spiders don't get me! I'd pick traveling any day over what I have now!

GIANT SPIDERS???!!!

Yes, giant spiders. Giant spiders that no one has been able to identify yet. When we were in the nice building, before being moved to the ghetto, I always left 2 blazers hanging in my cube, I was right under an air vent and always cold. Now I won't leave anything hanging in here for fear that the spiders will think they found a mate.

We used to be in a nice building, with all the other departments. Then someone had this brilliant idea to rearrange everyone. We got moved into a building that was scheduled for demolition. The front of the building is falling off. That's why I call it the ghetto. I just heard this morning that we may be moving back up to the nice building again. Yea!!

Isn't that just like the DoD? The building I'm in right now is the SECOND building I've lived/worked in that had been condemned at one point in it's existance. The first was my barracks at Keesler Air Force Base in beautiful Biloxi.

Don't cry Stacie

When you figure out the WHY, make sure you share. I ask myself that same question all the time.

sometimes i get captured and it makes me cry, especially something thats beautiful.  particularly in nature.

as to the WHY i live here, i know exactly.

You take them with you - the kids will love it trust me.  I cannot wait to take my son backpacking for a week in the middle of nowhere.  Sure it will be tough but what better memories than that.

I wish my wife would come to me and tell me she wants to move the wyoming or utah or somewhere like that - I have the opposite and I suppose I could "make" her since I am the sole provider but I won't deny her family priorities either.  So I do these crazy solo trips!

Just lined a new one up - BTW - Southern California and so I am heading out on a Saturday and hitting Joshua Tree up for some camping and then work the week.  That should be a blast!

Anyone want to come along?

Where will the "work" part be happening? If you're in San Diego county at all be sure to let me know. Also, if there's any way I can sneak away to Joshua Tree you can count me in.

I'm glad the visit went well Neal, especially with the lack of limitation on biking. I've had bursitis on my knee cap (not painful, but it looked like I had an implant right over my patella) and in my left elbow (which was VERY painful). Best of luck going forward with this, and keep us posted!

Hi Amy! Thanks for that... I basically told him the same thing. He's getting to the age now where he needs to understand that if continues on a path of poor choices it could affect him later in life. However, there's no reason he can't start fresh with a good attitude and work ethic and be able to build a life of his own choosing.

It sounds like you may have some knowledge of this.

I live on hill, there are hills all around.   I could drive a few miles to a park that is mostly flat. That may not be a bad idea anyway. I generally run on the road, the trail would be softer and hopefully more forgiving.
